I do think they shrunk the Kraken. He was a lot bigger in my memory.

I remember flying around DA looking for Adam just after badges were released. I found him, and started laying into him with my (pathetic) Dark Blasts. Those were... not effective. It was sad. The giant zombie could barely touch me, I was never in the slightest bit of danger, but I think I would have hurt him more if I had started dancing on his head.

i remember when Invoul got immobile when you activated the anti knockdown power, it was so useless

[/ QUOTE ]

I didn't find it useless, but I did find that I had to really think about it's use. Then, I had to position myself in the right place before activating Unyielding. Now, I fire it up and go charging into battle.

What do you mean? I knew players that would turn it on THEN charge. Go Tele-tankers. Or, if they went afk, that is what recall friend is for, especially once the tanker had invincability with it's agro-aura.

i miss the old storm kick animation, it wasn't the animation that killed you anyway it was the fact that it was 3 times longer than thunder kick and did about 1/3 the damage as well. If it did shadow maul damage then people would still love it.

I miss perez park back in I0 where you were punished from an xp point of view because they hadn't added the xp boost from being teamed.

When I first started playing this game, I didn't have a video card in my computer. (Had to save up for it.)

I absolutely could not see what my character looked like in the creation screen, so I went with Face 1, bald head, dark glasses, and a black T-shirt with a scorpion pattern that I didn't know if it sucked or not. (Ironically, this minimalist look got me a couple of compliments when I couldn't even see it myself.) In-game, all human figures were very insubstantial ghostly whisps who I could really only see because of the targeting reticle. Buildings were more substantial, but all the walls were transparent, like they were made of glass. (Although for some reason the HVAC systems were fully rendered. For me, it was City of Floating Ducts.)

Talk about a sense of wonder...

CoH had that ghosting effect on my buddy's laptop when we tried installing it just after release. He was very dissappointed.

What do I remember? I remember watching watching my inbox like a crazed jackal waiting for my invite to beta test. Then when I recieved it, staying up until 3 in the morning watching the download doing the peepee dance.

I remember hanging out in the Atlas doorway to Perez in groups of 30 or so (because that's what you did back then) and everyone had Run Auras, because we were pre-orders. One hero was talking to the group about what was in Talos, and the higher-level enemy groups. It was like a Q&A session. Then he had to go, so he jumped up, and flew away in a blaze of color. And in a blink he was gone. I was so amazed, thinking, "One day... one day..." It was the first time I (and probably many of us in that group) had seen someone flying, not including the super-slow hover.

I remember being angry that I had to work during the Ritki Invasion, but I was (kinda) compensated for it. That evening, after the invasion, before they shut the beta servers down, my team in Perez took down the Hydra. Then we sat around and shared our goodbyes before the server wiped out all our characters.

I remember when they had the 3-day head start for the beta testers, and trying my hardest to grind up to the level I attained during beta, which was 13. (My grinding skills weren't as refined as they are now.) I remember I achieved this in Boomtown, in the freeway tunnel.

I remember missing out on Positron for the longest time because of reports he was broken, and levelling past that TF. Then, going to do Synapse, the only efficient way to start a TF was to park your butt beside Synapse, go grab a sandwich, and wait for someone to join you. (We didn't have wonderous things like PinnacleBadges or TFPinnacle at the time.)

I remember when they installed the "PURPLE PATCH."

I remember when Issue 2 came out, and Broadcast was full of, "Where's the Icon?" and as I flew to the NW corner of SC, my framerate was slashed in half instantly. And for good reason, because there was about 40 heroes partying with their new stereos outside, and about 100 inside. THIS is what prompted the construction of the PDP, and it's predecessor, Pocket D.

Good times.

1. Dozens of heroes in Perez (by the AP gate) forming streethunt teams. 7-10 range for the streets 11-14 range for all the hydras in the lake.

2. Same in the 17-19 range for the far end of Boomtown.

3. Sewer Trial Kraken farming.

4. Warwolf herd-n-burn dumpster diving mission.

5. Fulcrum Shift buff icons that extended off the right side of the screen (from the team roster window).

6. One-shotting Sappers with Sniper Rifle 6-slotted for damage (Targetting Drone for Acc).

7. Atlas Park, Atlas Park 2, Atlas Park 3, etc.

Fulcrum shift that used to give fellow players d/c and was a form of griefing for a while lol.

I remember the first time that our taskforce stepped out of a mission and were set upon by Babbage. We'd heard rumors that there was a giant clockwork somewhere in the task force, but no details, and we expected to run into him inside a mission somewhere.

He towered over us (I swear he's shorter now) and we desperately fought back. None of us were at full, as we'd not rested before leaving the mission. The sense of triumph as we stood over his beaten shell trumped even the feeling of success from finishing the TF.

I remember carefully making my first character, after going through ALL the ATs and powersets, and ALL the options in the character creator, only to enter Outbreak and be amazed by all these other new heroes. And I could shoot fire from my hands. I COULD SHOOT FIRE! It was awesome with raisins.

Babbage does seem shorter now then back in the day. WEIRD.

I'd also swear that Kraken is smaller than he used to be...

I first fought him with a level... 12? ANd he seemed absolutely massive.

Adamastor is still as big as he always was though.

Posted

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they shrunk the Kraken. I couldn't tell you about Babbage, since I haven't been able to get on a Synapse TF group in ages.

Those were the days. In my infinite wisdom I rolled a spine/dark scrapper as my first character. That was rough. There were a lot of good times though. I miss street sweeping. I miss the feeling of dread you get the first time you see dark astoria, my heart jumped the first time I saw a group of BP zombies pop out of the ground in the graveyard. I remember groups getting into shouting matches in perez over ownership of the hydra spawns.

I don't miss the non-stacking DA armors. The dev's idea of "challenge" was to give more and more things status effects so the only useful armor toggle was obsidian shield, anything else was just stupid. I don't miss being outleveled by my regen friends because a) they got way less debt than I did and b) they were off taking on 8 person purple spawns while I was stuck trying to take down 4-5 white minions before they took me down.

It got a little better once I found an exploit using cloak of fear and provoke and got a few levels out of it. The old "run away" fear effect could be overcome using provoke, making them turn back to you, then the fear would kick back in and they'd start to run away, rinse/repeat until quills/death shroud killed em all. I'm not proud of it now but at the time I felt justified because it was the only way to hunt in those levels.

There's a lot of things that are better now, the same spines/da that people told me was a mistake to make is now a fuzzy wrecking ball of doom. I do sincerely miss street hunting though, I wish missions didn't give so much xp so that there would be a reason to go to perez or any other hazard zone...SIGH!

I don't miss street sweeping in the least. It's dull and repedative. There isn't any story to it, you just wander around and slaughter things. The happiest day I can remember in CoH is when my partner agreed to take me on the Manticore TF instead of our usual laps around Bricks. Sure, the XP wasn't as fast, but dammit if I didn't feel like I was doing something important for a change.

I guess I had it pretty good. One of my regular teammates used to GM D&D games so he would always make up a reason or an objective for us to be sweeping the streets.

Ex: sweeping the upper level freeway in skyway city he'd say "Okay boys, we have a diplomatic motorcade coming through this area in 10 minutes, we need to keep it as clear as we can!" then 10 minutes later he'd pick a car and have us follow it, clearing out any baddies we encountered as it went along.

Or he'd come up with a story about the CoT kidnapping people from a king's row building project and bringing them to Perez to use in rituals. We'd then hunt down the CoT spawns with the people in a green cloud.

I miss that guy heh.

Jay Doherty: Yes, there was this one night that I was ready to go home but had to drop the browns off at the super bowl before I left for home. While on the throne it hit me. I stayed for a few more hours and that why we have the pain pads in the game.

I remember MacAllen charging into a full spawn the one time he grouped with us in Beta...and promptly getting killed because the entire group was unprepared for it.

I remember the Cows.

I remember playing in Freak Force, which I believe was the second or third SG made in Beta.

I remember someone on the original forums had a character whose sole ability was to be able to summon Cheerleaders. Great stories!

I remember Qlop (actually, I remember him from the Anarchy Online Beta, too. I argued with him there just as much!)

I remember shelving my first Live character because his attack chain wasn't good enough.

I remember when Invisibility (now Superior Invisibility) + Hover took me 10 minutes to get to the top of the trees in Perez Park because it had the built in Slow that Stealth had.

I remember having a characters costume reset because she looked too naked (in beta...I was trying to prove a point!)

I remember how disappointed I was that I couldn't catch the Rikti attack ship during the Rikti Invasion...despite having 6 slotted Flight.

I remember writing a post asking Cryptic and NCSoft to have some sort of memorial for Coyote -- the first ever fan to post on the old forums, and writer of the "Welcome to City Of Heroes FAQ." (I'd "known" him online for quite some time over on the Safehouse.)

I remember my first encounter with the Knives of Artemis, and the numerous "Ow, my feet!" jokes afterwards.

That's enough for now...back to the spreadsheets!

FINALLY! People remember the cows! Nobody else I talk to remembers *sniff*

I remember the first time I went to King's Row and looked into the sky, and saw dozens of heroes creeping along, all excited that they'd unlocked Hover and showing it off. Especially because they were the ONLY ones in those days that were able to do the CoT spawn missions.

I remember playing Regen when people thought it was weak

I remember my first "non-political" supergroup which disbanded with no warning a few months after going live

I remember complaining that my inhumanly skinned characters were virtually forced to be naked because there was no way to put something on top of the skin level yet.

I remember the cows, of course.

Farm Aid and Brahma especially

I remember being telekinetically given flight by Farm Aid

I remember the Afro American who was impressed with my no-ugly-armor Ice/Strength tank build

I remember discovering demoing (have since demoed pretty much every door mission and a lot of major out-door hunts, ambushes and monster fights since going live)

I remember Speedball (a name I thought then, and still does, screamed for a scrapper variation of force field)

I remember going ga-ga over the costume editor

I remember my first look at Faultline

I remember the very....ugly martial arts animations and the inappropriate Katana animations

I remember being surprised with tails
