Devs moving on

They haven't been kind to devs either. The Street Fighter 4 series was top notch and put the spotlight back on them, but the MvC3 series, SFvsTK, and RE6 were kind of a mess.
Usually when they develop something in the west they just shop it out to an outside developer. Yeah, they are pretty much hated by Mega Man fans and charging for on-disc DLC, but they are one of the main publishers of western games for the japanese market (GTA games are published by them over there).

There are a ton of missions in GW2, and you can team in it as well, but you can also team without creating a team, in a sense. Personally I got bored with GW2 fairly quickly because the game lacks power progression. I might not have given it a fair shake.
This is also one of the things I don't like about GW2...i like missions and I like to team.

I know for a fact that I am going to be playing Planetside 2 probably more than anything else in the near future.

David recently spotlighted some Lady Death Artwork he did on his main DA page. I have a feeling this was some commission work he did before the studio shutdown though.

I say hurt them in the worst way possible. That is through their wallets, do not give NCsoft another penny of your money. Show them how dumb they are for making some of the dumbest moves a business can make. I mean more than just shutting this game down. A game that was making them some money in the hopes that Guild Wars 2, Blade and Soul, and Wildstar three unproven potential winners would cover their recent losses.
I keep sporadically checking Hosun Lee's, Melissa Bianco's and Matt Miller's twitters, but nothing yet.
I suspect they're trying to pull something together for a new project although who knows....but if they are, it may take them months longer, even into next year sometime, to fork over an announcement of any sort.... You know, after all this time, I still want to stab the NCSoft powers that be in their collective eye.... My anger over this situation has not resided in the least. I can't wait until Blade & Soul is ready to launch: I'm going to continually spam-bomb every article and forum post about it that I can possibly get my hands on so that every potential player knows what NCSoft is really like to deal with. |
Where they would cover the loss of severance pay that they had to pay out and not for this game. The 6 million dollars that was lost in the second quarter due to a dip in the sales of the market in Aion, which btw was sparked by the increase in prices in the cash shop. $50+ for a mount, are they daydreaming, the majority of players in WoW that I know of will not pay $25 for the sparkling pony let alone twice that amount.
Then paying 97 million for Ntreev just to have a company that produces causal MMO's. News flash you could've save that money and kept this game going. IMO this game is one of the most casual MMO's in existence. You can easily log on and make progress toward level cap. Log on and make progress to any amount of influence that you want. Log on and make progress toward getting set IO's or even purple IO's. The same is true for incarnate abilities.
How much more casual did were they looking for? Where they looking for a game where you log in and on the first day only spending 5 hours at most you already would have a max level character with max influence and at least all of your single origin enhancements. A game where the best enhancements and any reward merits, would just be given to you on a silver platter. A casual game with zero challenge.
It would be like having a golf game and your character is instantly 10 times plus better than the real Tiger Woods. Hitting hole in ones on every shot. If that is the case then they will learn quickly that a game without any challenge will not last long. It will not have anyone that will keep playing it. Players need a challenge to overcome. A wall that at first might look like you cannot climb it. It is overcoming those challenges that makes a game fun for all.

I haven't played STO since beta, but from what I remember it was very easy to drop in and out of groups. There was an autogrouping feature that would match you up with other players in the same system. Or that's how it worked back then at least. I haven't really followed the game post-release, but I've heard that they've made a lot of changes. It was fun though, and I mean to get back into it someday. If you like space combat that's closer to Starfleet Command than Wing Commander, you should check it out.
I considered going to STO; even started the download. Unfortunately I started reading more about it and it seems to be a very soloish game which is not my style. My entire time playing CoH I did maybe 15 missions solo because solo play bored me to death. This is also one of the things I don't like about GW2...i like missions and I like to team.

Vancouver isn't in the USA.
Updated the OP. Hmm.... I wasn't aware that Capcom created anything in the USA - I thought it was all about distribution, translation, and platform certification.
They've come under fire lately but I won't bring all that up here. |
It's in Canada, eh.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Yes I thought you meant the one in WA. I see now that one is in Canada.

Welcome to my country, Scorpion. I might want to come visit.
In context it's fairly moot, I think, as it probably ought to read "I wasn't aware that CAPCOM created anything in the North American region"...

Yeah - we were just referencing the 'challenge accepted' part as unlike Dr Aeon, they are system designers.

Seriously though and having toyed with Cryptic's engine for a while now on CO and STO, I see you and Hawk having a lot of fun there. There's a lot of neat toys to work with in the system.

they went near to work to the superhero genre again (champions online) then. Close but .. this proves the teory that CO (and the superhero genre)is now the black sheep for Cryptic and Perfect World

Maybe CO isn't getting as many new shinies as STO, but we are getting them!

I am not a huge fan of PvP, in general, but I think excluding it would be a mistake. There is a good sized demographic that wants good, solid, PvP in MMOs. The lack of popularity in CoH PvP is primarily because it failed in the "good" and "solid" categories.
You are right that pvp has ALWAYS been borked in CoH...which is why on my wishlist of a CoH2 ...pvp never exists.

If PvP is completely excluded from a project, there will be a lot of yelling and pleading by the playerbase to add it. This would, eventually, result in a PvP system that was tacked on after the fact, and would always feel tacked on.

I personally hate PVP, both because of some of the nerfs to the PVE powers that came from it, and my experiences in doing PVP have mostly been unpleasant. (Not just in this game, but other MMOs and even some social games.)

As I understand it, the biggest problem with PVP is the wide range of powers available to players (which is a big plus for PVE). You've got balancing problems, and if people figure out a combo that stymies others (combinations of control powers), it becomes a mandatory FOTM because you can't win otherwise. And a novice that just wants to see what it's like has no shot. So yes, if you're going to have PVP, it needs to be designed from the start.
But as a PVE player, if designing PVP in from the start means limiting PVE effectiveness, that doesn't make me happy. On my list of "what I need from a new game", the ability to completely ignore PVP is high on the list (no constant "you want to duel" popup boxes, no PVE content in PVP zones, PVE effectiveness isn't affected by PVP results).
The simple solution is to say "no PVP" - but there are a lot of players who love PVP so that's probably not the best solution. But in a game with as wide variety of powers and playstyles as CoH has, pleasing both camps would be a tough nut to crack.
