Quote:Thank goodness none of that ever happened on the CoH forums!I don't believe s/he is actually employed by Bioware, (it's a favourite tactic on the SWTOR forums to try and discredit positive posters by accusing them of being employed by Bioware as paid shills) just a raging fanboy/girl who refuses to acknowledge any flaws and will try to twist even the most ridiculous situations so they can be viewed in a positive light, even going so far (as demonstrated here) to completely make stuff up.
And the thread was most probably deleted because after that point, I can pretty much guarantee it devolved in to an all-out flame war. Common occurrence over on SWTOR, I'm afraid. To quote from the movies, "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious." -
I disagree. NCSoft still has its focus primarily on PC-based MMOs. Disney has moved away from both PC gaming and MMOs. CoH looks like such a poor fit for Disney that I'm still trying to wrap my head around the reasons for trying to pitch to them. There are other companies that have MMOs as the core of their business, and might actually be interested in adding CoH to their lineup.

Quote:This is why I never make any reference to my gender, race, or age in forums. I like the notion that my posts can be judged solely on the merit of my ideas."Specifically, the Internet has been claimed to lead to greater gender equality, with women, as the socially, politically, and economically less powerful gender, especially likely to reap its benefits."
"A large and growing list of articles, mostly looking at newsgroup and email communications, suggest that norms of gendered behavior continue to shape online interactions." (Nice way of saying, stating you're female puts you into the sexist placement you already have in society, online.) -
Quote:"New media" nowadays means smartphones and tablets, and Facebook and other social networks. Disney have already stated that's where they want to focus their gaming efforts. I don't see an 8+ year-old MMO fitting with their strategy.I didn't know it had already been posted, it was off the front page. And yes, Disney has Marvel, but Marvel doesn't have anything like City of Heroes. From what I understand (I haven't looked into it very thorougly), the new Marvel game that's upcoming isn't comparable to City of Heroes, being a bit more "arcadey". I don't know exactly all the details of the pitch, but I suspect that it's a pretty detailed justification of how City of Heroes would round out their current holdings and help them branch into a new medium into which they haven't been particularly strong. And Disney is all about branching into new media, so I think it's actually a pretty good pitch.
Thanks for the support, I'm actually writing my letters now.
I posed this in the other thread: why make a pitch to Disney at all? I thought you guys already had interested groups willing to buy the game, and the problem was that NCSoft wouldn't sell. What do you think Disney is going to do that the other parties haven't already done? -
I thought we had already established that other parties had expressed interest in buying CoH, and that NCSoft is unwilling to sell it. What exactly do you expect Disney to do that the other groups haven't already done? This idea sounds really half-baked to me.

Quote:Read the section I quoted in my earlier post. I played on Freedom for years, and mostly pugged the TFs. The groups I joined were almost invariably filled with nice people who were decent players. As was the case when I played on Pinnacle, and I'm sure would have been the case for any other server. Server-bashing was always petty, and at this point it just looks ridiculous.I knew I Burnt The Toast was probably going to flame me, but I'm genuinely surprised at the vehemence from the rest of you. I suppose your anecdotal evidence of "that one time" that you couldn't find a team on Virtue trumps my knowledge of my home server. And I definitely wasn't exaggerating anything.
-
I think a lot of players who haven't been active will still log in for the final day. I'll log in for sure. They're planning one last raid night on Freedom, and I definitely want to take part in that.
Quote:One thing I will not miss about CoH is that type of poor attitude. There's a reason why Virtue's population eventually exceeded Freedom's. PUGs on Freedumb are a nightmare of immature players that play poorly. By comparison, Virtue is PUG heaven. We tend to be friendly, mature and intelligent. You will have fun here. Transfer today. -
I really enjoyed the combat mechanics and aesthetics, at least for some of the power sets. Fun combat is a major consideration for me when choosing an MMO, and it's the main reason I kept coming back to CoH. It's also the main reason I did not like CO and DCUO.
Having said that, I like the direction towards more action-oriented combat seen in recent games. After playing games like Vindictus and Tera, it's hard to go back to the old-style, tab-targeting combat. I just wish that newer MMOs would realize that there are more than three possible group roles. -
I was just about to post that Starkindred is planning to lead one more raid night on Freedom on 11/30, CoP/Hami/Rikti MS, starting at 6PM EST. If people just need Hami and can make one of the Virtue raids then that might be better, because I don't know what turnout will be like on the last day. Otherwise I think Freedom has stopped doing regular weekend raids, or at least I didn't notice any activity last night.

I regret that I did not get more 'Master of...' badges. I gave up on them early on because doing master runs with pugs was such a PITA. I did spend a fair amount of time over the last month or so that I played participating in leagues that were trying for some of the harder itrial badges, and had a lot of fun doing so. Makes me wish that I'd spent more time doing that type of challenging content, though I also wish that the rewards for some of those difficult badges had been more tangible.
I also kinda regret that I didn't decorate my base better. Every time I opened that editor, I suddenly got the urge to go do anything else. -
I'm a longtime member on a couple of general gaming forums, and an old EQ forum that also discusses other MMOs. If anything noteworthy happens, at least one of them should pick up on it. I won't visit the Titan Network forums, but if I think about it I may occasionally check the main page on Paragonwiki since it seems to be the closest thing they have to a news page.

Quote:I think it's an important distinction if you want to buy a game studio, and are trying to determine the value of that studio. If you're having a discussion on a gaming forum? Not so much. I don't try to correct every mistake I see on the internet. Also, sometimes I just like to enjoy my popcorn.I tend to think that it's actually an important distinction, especially when it comes down to whether the studio and/or game were profitable or not.
Many of the saveCoH crowd are angry because of the perception that a successful game is being shut down. If it turns out that the game was in fact losing money, would they be less angry? Probably not. But at least they'd need to find another reason to be angry.
*edit* Geez, you guys type quickly. -
A far more likely reason is that either he or Mercedes didn't understand what those numbers represented, or used the wrong term in referring to those numbers. In some of the posts from that search link AF posted, it's clear that the people were talking about sales, and mislabeled them as profits. I'm not surprised; even most businesspeople are not financially-minded, and will misuse or not fully understand financial and accounting terminology. It's happened on these boards too, and I generally didn't consider it important enough to correct.

MMOs will be much harder to preserve than other types of games. EC already mentioned the lack of other players. They mentioned connectivity too, but with MMOs a substantial portion of critical game code lies on the game companies' servers. If the companies don't release that code to the public, would-be players will have to find or create server emulators. At that point preservation is probably compromised, because the results of emulation are unlikely to be 100% accurate.
Even if the code is preserved and can be run on future hardware, I think the time commitment that typical MMOs require will discourage people from checking them out most of them. I've read multiple accounts of MMO developers who haven't played many of the games that are out right now. Maybe WoW will have enough historical importance to encourage future devs to examine it, but other contemporary MMOs will likely just fall by the wayside. -
Quote:I haven't played STO since beta, but from what I remember it was very easy to drop in and out of groups. There was an autogrouping feature that would match you up with other players in the same system. Or that's how it worked back then at least. I haven't really followed the game post-release, but I've heard that they've made a lot of changes. It was fun though, and I mean to get back into it someday. If you like space combat that's closer to Starfleet Command than Wing Commander, you should check it out.I considered going to STO; even started the download. Unfortunately I started reading more about it and it seems to be a very soloish game which is not my style. My entire time playing CoH I did maybe 15 missions solo because solo play bored me to death. This is also one of the things I don't like about GW2...i like missions and I like to team.

1. Looking back, considering everything, which was your favorite archetype in the game?
I'd say scrapper. That's not a slam-dunk answer, because I never really gravitated towards a particular AT. Still, I have two scrappers on my short list of still-fun-at-50 characters.
2. In possible contrast, when it comes to your favorite character, what kind was it? List AT and the two main sets.
You might as well ask me to pick a favorite son or daughter. My archery/energy blaster was the oldest of my active characters, and probably the one with the most time logged. It was my favorite character to run Katie TF with before reward merits were introduced; I loved dropping RoA on Mary and company right as they spawned. This was my first character with an IO'ed build, and it's definitely the one whose build has changed the most over the years. More recently the blaster kinda took a back seat to other characters, but I was interested in trying out the changes in I24.
3. What AT did you evolve to enjoy over the years that you disliked initially?
Dominator. Not so much disliked as completely ignored, because I had already tried out control sets using controllers. I didn't roll my fire^3 dom until after the GR expansion, but I had a ball with that character once I did. -
Just so my contribution to this thread isn't all snark, I gave up hope when NCSoft made their followup announcement that they exhausted all options, thanks for the support of the game, blah blah blah. Up until that point, I wasn't sure. I didn't expect anything to come of the petitions and server vigils and such, but when I read that former Paragon management was trying to buy the game I thought they might have had a chance.
As for moving on, I did that back in July. I ran out of interesting things to do, so I let my sub lapse while I played other games. I would have eventually resubbed when the devs added enough new content to draw me back in. Oh well, c'est la vie. -
Quote:That sounds about as subtle as a jackhammer. Also, I recall that people who voiced various criticisms about CoH's cash shop were dogpiled in these forums. I don't know why you think you'd receive better treatment in other MMO communities. That'd be why I used the word "subtly". You can't just burst in there and go ranting about the death of CoH. Instead you very nonchalantly insert yourself into a conversation about some item on the cash shop, maybe even expressing interest in it yourself, but also "concern" about the value of that item given it's only good for as long as the game lasts. You don't have to breathe a word about CoH.
And seriously, even if you're not out for blood, this is a very sensible point to make. People SHOULD be aware that cash shops might not be forever. It is in your own best interests to make people aware of this. If it becomes a concern for enough of their customers, then they have to address it. Convincing other people to vote with THEIR wallets instead of just voting with your own, is absolutely fair game. -
I'm amused that any longtime CoH player would complain about the size of breasts in other MMOs.
Quote:Sister Psyche was prominently featured in promotional material, with cleavage in full display, for the same reason that the Blade & Soul's marketers are making a big deal over some of their game's character artwork: sex sells. Comic books are not above this either, and my typical image of heroes and villains includes improbably-proportioned women wearing skin-tight or otherwise revealing clothing.I think the difference is that sexuality wasn't the driving force in CoH's promotional material, save for Sister Psyche and her tacky nipple pasty tights everything was the typical image of heroes and villains. You knew what the game was about, heroes doing hero things and villains doing villain things.
Quote:Blade & Soul, I'm not sure what's going on. There are curvy bunny girls in clothing several sizes too small that carry weapons that weigh more than they do... and some mouse children that throw magic cats at things or something. There's a male there but who the hell cares, am I right? What is the "soul" part of Blade & Soul? I see blades, they don't seem to be much more than an accessory. -
Quote:I believe you're looking at sales per title, not profit. That would make a lot more sense, I never seen that report before so I can't understand it and was confused where the loss was reflected.
This is the breakdown of profit per title translated to USD:
$41,990,356 Guild Wars2
$35,088,296 Lineage
$29,918,392 Blade&Soul
$24,677,040 Aion
$12,182,800 Lineage II
$09,360,604 Others
Still odd that GW is making only 20% more than Lineage 1, but I guess that's some good profits there.
*edit*
Wikipedia says that B&S was released in China on 8/16, so they only have a half-quarter's worth of revenue for that territory. NCSoft is not the publisher in China, and they don't list China as a separate region, so those numbers might be classified as 'royalties' maybe? -
That settles it then, I'm voting for Romney. Bring on the zombie apocalypse! Yay!
-
-
I looked at the revenue numbers and saw an MMO in slow decline, which is typical for an aging MMO. I didn't see a game that was unsustainable. I expected staff reductions, not closure of the game and studio.
-
You can remove those comic-book outlines in the video options btw. You can also remove the cel shading by turning off post-processing effects (there may be a separate option by now, but that's how I did it in beta). IMO CO didn't look too bad once those are turned off. The gameplay was another matter though; I thought the combat was horrible.
