What it comes down to

I've had a growing suspicion that I'd like confirmed one way or the other.

If it came down to the choice of saving the game, or saving the studio, which would you consider the preferable outcome?

I, personally, would much rather save the studio. Games are code, and can be rebuilt.

If it came down to a choice of one or the other then I say save the Studio. I love the game but as you say games can be rebuilt and we have the best studio out there. Not to say anything about feeding their familes etc....

The studio is far more important than the game.

Yes, we want to save the game, but saving the studio is far more important, because they are the heart of this community.

i would also agree that the studio is first

these devs are the best devs ever and any other game just wouldnt be the same without them

Of course, if I have to choose, I choose that the people who made/enhanced/fixed/maintained this game would be employed. Naturally. NOBODY would or should choose the game over real lives, I mean, honestly. That's a real *** move to say you want the game first.

BUT... they kind of go hand in hand, in one respect: If Paragon Studios survives, then the game survives.

The other side of that argument isn't true, however: the game could survive without the Studio. It would also be the Final Revision of the game. And the people of Paragon Studios would not have work.

I say the only answer is to save them both. But if one can't be saved... then the obvious is to save the game, if possible, so that the legacy of both their and OUR works can be continued, and played, even if development is, in effect, done, and the game is what it is from here on out.

From a purely pragmatic point of view, of course.

For my part, I want them both back to where they were August 29, 2012: Working and moving forward. And none of this shutdown idea is even an inkling of a thought.

Mike

August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.

We can rebuild it! We have the technology!

Heh. No but really, save the studio. Not a question.

Save the cheeseburger.

I mean the studio. The only obvious choice.

Hmm ...

When we're talking about "save the game" or "save the studio," under what circumstances are we talking about? Do we mean, by "save the studio," that Paragon Studios remains a part of NCSoft?

I think the employees are more important than the studio itself. I don't know the terms of their employment with NCSoft, but isn't it possible for them to stay together and form a new, independent studio? If I understand correctly, this is what happened with Westwood. When EA gave them the axe, a lot of its employees moved on to found Petroglyph. Not all of them, but many of them.

So, if they were to do that, would saving the studio mean investing in their new studio as a Kickstarter?

houtex, there's also the possibility that the Devs form their own indie studio, although they'd be very unlikely to be able to keep everybody (Zwill commented on that, saying something along the lines of it would be awesome, but it'd also mean he'd likely still have to find a new job).

I feel fairly confident that the Devs, if given a flesh slate, would come up with a new MMO that was still quite original, like how CoX was (and still is). They've shown they're a very talented bunch.

Of course, I'd also like to see the game survive. If another company does pick it up, they'd more than likely try to snatch up a few of the former devs (at least on a temporary basis), since I'd doubt they'd just want to throw it up on a server and never do anything else with it again, and trying to learn a massive code base without being able to talk to anyone familiar with it is absolutely horrible.

At this point, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. I'm hoping that there's at least a sizable group that all joins up at a studio, and can weave some of CoH's magic into another MMO (because CoH is the only game that has kept my attention for even longer than Starcraft did )

Saving the studio means saving the studio by any and all means necessary, yes.

The studio. I'd rather have a version of COH with a new, modern engine and graphics anyway. I don't give a crap if they're not allowed to use the name.

Well it depends a bit on what "save the studio" means. Assuming you mean a team that it composed of Paragon Studio veterans then I would say it's a no brainer. Much as I love CoH it is getting long in the tooth and most of the dev team has enough credibility that I would definitely give any game they released a go almost no matter what (with some exceptions, for example if they decide they want to make an anime dating sim then I would probably give it a pass).

On the other hand saving Paragon Studios itself doesn't mean much if all of the senior devs are gone. For example which is closer to the real Black Isle Studios? The new Black Isle Studios at Interplay or Obsidian Entertainment?

Save the Cheerleader....

Seriously, the studio, hands down.

Studio, no contest. I'd really miss the game, but in reality, it was never the game itself that brought my husband and I back time after time. It was the community, the ease and pure awesomesauce of the teaming (and later, league) mechanic. The studio knows how to implement these things in a way no other studio has yet matched, and can recreate the ATMOSPHERE we love so much...pretty much anywhere, and in any game they develop.

Save the studio. As much as I enjo CoH, its more important to me personally that some of the best and nicest developers, distrubuters, and everything else they employ have stable jobs then it is for me to play CoH. I have other games to play, but for anyone, right now is a very bad time to be unemployed.

As much as I love the game.... Save the studio. People's livelihoods are at stake. They've shared their dreams with us and could do so again.

Studio.

Like my friend said, if they made another game, I'd definitely buy it.

The game is just code and can be remade, perhaps better than before.

The studio is the legacy that has fostered this, our community. Without the people behind the scenes, this community would never have existed.

Save the studio.

Save the studio.

I would still cry my eyes red & puffy, and wail at the injustice of losing my Forever Game, but I love these Game Devs too much to pick the game- as much as I love it and as important as it has been to me- over the studio.

I don't see this choice ever coming to pass, but still, it's a no brainer. A painful one, but still a no brainer.
