False Hope

I thought for days about posting this or not. Due to the number of people that seem to be swayed by a few well known (and well meaning I guess) voices in the community, I simply feel compelled.

Myself and several friends have enjoyed this game for years. I joined on Day 4.

Over the years, friends of ours have joined, played and left, with others joined to replace them.

Paragon has given us endless hours of fun entertainment.

It is sad that it's going and it's atrocious how the studio has been treated in this turn of events IMO.

It is equally atrocious that so many players are being given false hope that he game will ever 'be saved' or return in any meaningful form. Good intentions or not.

The developers have gone their separate ways.

Anyone that has followed the nuts and bolts of the systems that make up CoH knows that even the latest developers struggled to bend the game to their will due to the massive code base. No one will be able to just pick it up and use it.

As for campaigning for NC to reconsider or getting another company to try and buy the game, there is no sensible business person that would do so. It simply does not make financial sense.

I loved this game. I have close personal friends that shed a tear over losing it.

Please don't sully Paragons memory by spreading false hope to people in vulnerable emotional states. To me you are acting like charlatans offering to allow people to speak with their dead loves ones.

Let it go. Let people move past this. Please stop preying on their emotionally vulnerable state.

I'm really not sure what particular piece of false hope you are talking about. No one has said anything is set in stone for saving it, it's all just working on trying to at this point.

And if you consider trying false hope, well...Not much I can say about that.

Actually, I can say something...You can't succeed without trying. Even if you fail, you know you did everything in your power to try.

So THAT'S why I left you on ignore when I cleared out my list following the foreclosure notice. Well, there's that mystery solved.

Major, I only have one thing to say:

Star Wars Galaxies has a server emulator in beta stages with both an Stable and an Unstable server being played on.

There's absolutely nothing preventing COH from going the same path. If you don't want to play on a buggy and unstable server with very little content which will take years to refine into the current COH experience... well, more power to you. Alpha testing is not for everybody.

Me, I'll be helping in any way I can. And I hope you'll consider playing on a community server once it reaches a stable stage.

Nothing is impossible.

I've came and went from CoH over the last 4 years, but whilst it's not the only MMO for me, I still have a lot of affection for it. The news of the iminent shutdown shocked me more than I would have expected, much more, so I can imagine how devastating this is being for those of the players for whom this is their only MMO.

I'll say this though... I've said some cynical things about the forum community over time, but these last few days I've been impressed at how well it's held together, rather than collapsing into self destructive rage and recriminations. Given the history of forum dramas erupting over what were, in retrospect, minor things, I'm pleasantly surprised.

I still remember arguing with Golden Girl in the GR forums (didn't we all...) but I have nothing but respect for the way that GG and TonyV and the others are responding to this, rallying the community and doing what they can to keep morale high.

Win or lose, I think it's a good thing if the community goes out on a high, being as good as they - we - have often claimed to be. That alone is justification enough for the sincere efforts that are being made, and I wish all those who are actively working toward it the very best of luck.

Do not confuse 'trying' with 'false hope'. Our chances of success are very unlikely- everyone should have already realized that before we even started, but at this point the fate of the game is not yet set in stone.

Give up and leave if you want to, but many of us here won't quit so easily.

Heroes (and Villains) Never go down without a fight.

We're getting non-gaming media coverage, Tony and the Titans are working harder than ever to bust out some contingency plans, and everyone seems to be rallying to the cause.

Win or Lose, I'm in for the long haul.

Hear, hear!

NCSoft, Please reconsider your decision to close down CoH. It has an extremely loyal following and enjoys a great amount of free support from the larger community.

I invite everybody to add the above image to your signature as a petition to reverse NCSoft's decision.

When I first heard the news, my plan was -- as I posted at the time -- to log on one more time, take some screenshots of my favorite characters, log off and uninstall. To accept the end gracefully.

But now that the initial shock is over, I've changed my mind. At this point I am choosing to believe we can win this fight, and I'm doing what I can to help. I realize that I may be setting myself up for a crash on December 1, but if that does come to pass, at least I'll have the comfort of knowing that I did what I could to avert the end.

I think you have good intentions yourself, MP. But I think you stopped there. I understand your grief, but frame this for a moment.

There are a few different paths of action going on here. There are quite a few people who are simply, as you allege, in denial -- a natural stage of grief; I wonder what you think this post will accomplish for them?

There are those who are clinging to false hopes and looking to make a deal -- some kind of bargain with somebody, anybody, to keep this thing alive just as it was FIVE DAYS AGO. Another stage of grief, and these people are part of no organized movement and will fade away. And again; what are you hoping to accomplish?

So I know, you're upset. But there's no sense in directing that at fellow-mourners. You're stuck in the same cycle they are.

And then there are those of us who are dedicated to fighting to save Paragon City in whatever way we can -- even if, in the end, it's merely a community of refugees and ex-pats, settling down in new lands. We're simply not leaping to that stage yet. My grief for this game ended two days ago, although I know I'll feel it again acutely when the plug is pulled in three months. In the meantime -- and in the time following that -- I'm dedicated to preserving every great thing about this place I can.

Win or lose, the fight gives us meaning, and our goals are worthy. Or as Canny said elsewhere:

(she may have mostly been making fun of everyone involved. I'mma let it stand anyway.)

So, sirrah, how about you? You ever play a Scrapper in this game your friends, but not you, have shed tears over? Did you win every fight?

Did you get up to do it again anyway?

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

That, pretty much. If we don't win, at least we can say we tried. Through spreading the news, petitioning NCSoft, letting games companies and publishers know about our game and asking if they might try and save it, trying to save the game ourselves through a community effort, or emulating the server structure, letting celebrities know who have played the game.

We can take pride in that, even if we don't succeed. Because if our actions make even a slight chance of salvation possible, that's a possibility we might not have gotten.

False hope, my foot. And as an MA scrapper, it's quite the foot, I assure you.

I can only say this in response - trials like this is exactly what being a hero is REALLY about. It's not about the powers, the fame or the adulation. It's about standing up in the face of impossible odds, and giving it your all to fight for what you treasure most - even if you know you have no chance of success.

If that's not how you see it, then fair enough - go with my blessing, find another game that suits you if you wish. But please, don't belittle our efforts with your comparisons to charlatans and parlour tricksters.

'So because the odds are against something, people just shouldn't try at all? If people followed that mentality, there's be no USA (whether that's a good or bad thing is your opinion), no Apple (again, good or bad, your opinion), and countless other things that simply would not be here if people had just "laid down and died."

Fighting for CoH doesn't sully its memory. On the contrary, it strengthens its memory by associating it with a community that doesn't simply give up because something isn't likely. You're free to sit on the side lines and do nothing, but don't criticize those who do...do...something.

And when December 1 comes and CoH is still running, don't try to take any credit.

I mentioned in another thread playing a team post-announcement that went up against some all-psi foes that were wiping the floor with us. After the second or third team wipe one of the other players quipped "I'm going to miss these team wipes."

If we fight against this and lose, this is going to be one team wipe I'm not going to miss out on. I will lay there on the floor of the sewers with a smile. Sorry, just can't do it any other way.

Talk about false. This game was making money, not losing money. Making money makes financial sense.

Let's be quite frank here.
While some may see the efforts being put out here and think "We're saved." The reality is that this is going to be an uphill battle all the way.
And yes, there's a very good chance that all the effort amounts to nothing.

But, at the end of it all, if everyone pulls together and does everything that they can, win or lose, we'll know we tried our hardest and regret NOTHING.

We'll either succeed or we'll walk away know that NOTHING could have saved the game.

Hey all, I don't want anyone to think that I'm avoiding responding to threads like this. I don't have a lot of time, so I'll keep it short.

Maj, buddy, I hear you. I know where you're coming from. But we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one, because I just don't think you could be more wrong. I hope that someday we can share a couple of beers* and I can rub it in just how you you were. Other folks have posted above comments that are probably better than what I can come up with right now on the small amount of sleep I've gotten the past few days, so I'm going to basically say "ditto" so I can continue reaching out to some media contacts to help us drum up support.

I do ask that even though you think it's over, a done deal, right now, that you stay tuned. I really think that it's just a matter of time before you will see the tide turning, and when it does, we'll welcome your help with open arms.

Thanks for everything you've added to the game over the years, and I hope that we can argue about this for a long time to come.

* To make sure this is crystal clear, we each would have our own respective beers. We wouldn't be swapping bottles or anything, that would be gross. And besides, I don't like beer, so when this metaphorical event takes place, I will probably be drinking a soda or, if something stronger is needed, a margarita or one of those awesome Trader Vic's mai tais.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

To me, I am resigned to the fate given to the game.

OTOH, signing a petition or stating my dissatisfaction of the whole affair certainly won't hurt. And if something comes of it, so be it.

Edit: Wait, isn't false hope better than no hope at all?

This is the first time I've posted since the announcement came down.

Hope implies that there's a chance, even if it's a slim one, of getting what we all want. There is a slim chance. It could be as slim as dental floss, but it is a chance.

People are gathering together all kinds of ideas, some more realistic than others. You might not think it'll do any good and you may very well be right. However, don't begrudge the people who want to put effort into trying to save this very well-loved game.

There are some, like myself, who really can't do a whole lot. I've no remarkable influence in real life and I'm not made of money. Seems pretty cut and dried when you put it in that kind of perspective.

Regardless, I have a voice. My voice. When my voice joins with others, it becomes much louder.

I have options of making myself heard and I will use them. As many of them as I can. If that means flooding twitter, so be it. If that means flooding NCSoft's mail room, don't think I won't. I plan to be every bit as annoying as I possibly can to make myself heard.

I don't believe in false hope. There's no such thing in my book. You either have hope or you don't.

It might be futile. It might not work. But if six years in this game didn't teach me that heroes are persistent and annoying to the evil-doers, then it didn't teach me a damn thing.
