Quote:Sweet! An interesting thing happened while I was at my parent's tonight. I was on one of their computers looking at the CNN piece on the new iPhone and when I got to the bottom of the page, guess what I found?
Not sure how long it'll stay there but here's the link to the iPhone story.

Quote:Hear, hear!Do not confuse 'trying' with 'false hope'. Our chances of success are very unlikely- everyone should have already realized that before we even started, but at this point the fate of the game is not yet set in stone.

Quote:I think that the development of a (possibly) simple set of tools to make running events like this would pay off well. Making the running of an event like this one (possibly much) easier would allow for this to me more than a once-a-year thing. And that would give the whole game a much more interactive feel than it currently has.I'm not sure if a destination point is possible. We can drag mobs around some by making them follow us, but I don't know if it's possible to tell them to go to a particular location. That, as well as creating auto spawn points, would also require development time, which isn't always available.
I was on Freedom on the 17th, only about 5-10 minutes "late". I logged into Talos 2, looked around, and found a Lucy with about 40 tentacles just north of the island with Talos's statue. I and some others pulled together a team of 8 with a little bit of trying, and we went at her.
But I never saw a single Arachnos, Coralax, or anything other than that one Lucy. I never saw any red text (I might have missed it in all the commotion), I never saw any suggestion to head to Pocket D, and thus once we defeated her it looked like it was over. Some waited around for several minutes, plus I had enough time to Raptor Pack the entire circumference of Talos Island proper on patrol. I never knew about the PD "afterparty" until I read this thread.
I do appreciate the fact that running an event like this is a lot of work. I just wish there had been fewer/smaller cracks for my toon to fall into. I do still love this game and genre. CoH was my first MMO - I found an unopened DVD edition box for $10 close to 4 years ago, and that got me started.

Quote:True, and I was aware of that. If I had to guess, I would expect that multi-boxing is same-server at least 98% of the time. I just didn't want to limit my statement to exclude any possibility.Multiboxing is not (typically) playing on multiple servers at once. It's having two (or more) accounts on the same server and running them at the same time.
Quote:As far as why take it on other servers?
- It's "your" signature character. And you don't want to use transfers to move it.
Quote:- Defensively, so someone has to alter the name if they're trying to make you look bad - don't think it's ever happened that I can recall, but who knows.
Quote:- Kind of related to the first, but different versions of the same character, treating each server as a different dimension or timeline. Or just trying different powersets.
For instance, I've got Memphis Bill pretty much everywhere. I've talked about where the character came from before - inspired by Scuzz in DP7 (basically "sweats" acid,) I created a character for a Silver Age Sentinels game with the same issue, but strong - and yeah, borrowed the firing "spitballs" that I managed to blow up a bunker with. >.> (Epic die roll.)
Quote:COH came out, I figured, what the heck, that's who I'm making. First character. The strength was easy - Superstrength. The second powerset, though... there was no dark armor for tanks at the time, and nothing but fire fit. So, Fire/SS tank. Later, I rolled up a Spines/DA scrapper. Friends started a SG on another server - Fire/EM, just because. COV came out - alternate universe where he was initially a gang member, got too successful, was betrayed, ambushed and dumped in an industrial waste dump (which triggered the area damage and other effects) - SS/Dark Brute. Tanks finally got dark armor - Dark/SS tank. Kinetic Combat comes out - Fire/Kin tank (which, yes, was the other reason for that, as "tank" is not normally what people think of when they hear "fire/kin.") Have another that's Street Justice. Another that's a Warshade - all different ways of expressing the same character. My mind boggles at the thought of trying that myself.
Because I work the night shift (and don't farm), a very large portion of my CoH time is spent soloing. As such, it is taking me quite a long time to level my toons. If I made (alternate timeline) copies of them across all the (english) servers, 95% or more of them would still be below level 5.
It took me two years just to get my "signature" (favorite might be a better term) toon to level 50 -- and that was by not playing my other 20 odd toons for large chunks of time. And I still haven't gotten my Lore pets yet, having only recently unlocked that slot. -
Quote:Thanks for the offer.Oh yeah. For example, this thread inspired me to check the availability of three particular names that are critical to a themed SG concept/name. To my delight the names were available on 10 servers, so I grabbed them and formed the SG on each server. Sure the other 7 names the SG concept requires are just as important but they are so unusual that the only way they'd get used is by someone trying to be a jerk and snagging it just to keep me from filling out my SG rosters. So because they are unusual I don't have to rush to get them reserved ASAP.
Oh and if I had Thunderfist on any server I'd gladly give it up for you.
Okay. But what I don't understand is, once you have a name on one or two servers, what's the point of taking it on the other ~10? No offense, but that just seems greedy to me. After all, you can only play one toon at a time -- unless you are multi-boxing? -
Quote:That means over 100 character creations each year?Personally about once a year I do a spring cleaning and go thru my characters and delete around 100 characters whose concepts never took off.
I've been in CoH for about 3.5 years now, and probably haven't made more than 50 -- total. Of which I still have about 40. I tend to make a toon only if I have a 'working concept' to start with, and/or a name. Yes, I have decided to not make a toon if I couldn't design a name that was available -- and that is after at least 4-6 tries at re-working the name in some way.
I tried to get "ThunderFist" on Guardian (my first server, and first toon). N/A. I tried "Thunderfist" - N/A. So I tried KiloVolt. N/A. MegaVolt. N/A. GigaVolt. N/A. TeraVolt. N/A. PetaVolt. Available! But I still dream about being able to rename him to ThunderFist, since he is based upon a TableTop character of mine with that name.
I did get ThunderFist on Exalted, btw. -

I had been (to my shame) using horribly outdated drivers on my Sapphire ATI/AMD Radeon HD 6970, and had been experiencing crashes (the CoH game, not my PC usually), "dropped" skins/bitmaps(?) where parts of the environment, creeps, PCs became invisible or solid black, and corruption of text in text baloons. I was also seeing occasional, massive hits to my framerate, from 60fps down to 3-5. I could usually fix all but the text corruption by using /reloadgfx.
I upgraded to the latest software & drivers supplied from Sapphire (12.4), and I have seen *maybe* one issue in the past ~two weeks. I haven't checked my framerate lately, but it feels like it is back up to it's old 60fps self.
My one issue is that I cannot get the control center to open. Something happened a long time ago and it stopped woking, but since I am not an overclocker, and everything else still worked fine, so I let it slide. When I updated, I uninstalled all ATI drivers/software, rebooted to safe mode and used a drive cleaner, cleaned my registry, removed any remaining ATI folders, rebooted and installed the new software/drivers. Fixed the graphics issues (apparently), but didn't fix the inability to get into the control center. :-\ -
Ah. When you said "split it into two rooms", I was thinking you were saying to spread the "Cerebro Room" across two physical rooms. I misunderstood your meaning.
-
I'm not following how this could be split between two rooms, what with the '1x1 doorway' that must be between all rooms.
Given the limited maximum height inside a base, I think that would limit a spherical structure to a 3x3 footprint, or maybe a little smaller. -
You could try it with the (off) florescent light fixture (the narrow one). It would take scads of them, but since they are one "click" tall instead of a desk's 3-4 "clicks" tall, it would give greater controll over the Z-axis curveature of the room.
-
IMO the price of rooms and plots should be considerably lower, but the rent higher. I have a toon with a SG of about 20 toons, but only 5-8 are active on even a semi-regular basis.
Growth of the base (being able to upgrade/expand) is next to nill, yet my SG leader toon could pay the upkeep even if he were the only active toon, and only got played once a month.
Price changes would literally be no sweat. No concerns about making a graphics change that could crash the client. No concerns about *anything* that isn't already in place.
The Über-SGs that have an extremely large, very active membership will have oodles of Prestige to work with, both to buy (and decorate) a jumbo base, and pay rent. But the players who, for whatever reason, are in a small, mostly dormant SG are unnecessarily burdened with the extreme cost of the rooms and plots, while paradoxically are able to pay the rent for a base that has 99% of all functional equipment (medical, transportation, storage, and crafting) with ridiculous ease. -

-
Strange. Moreso because it was such a large difference. The only time I've had base prestige go negative is when I've spent most all of it, and my membership dropped (below 20), loosing me the "first 20" joining bonus for that toon.
-
Quote:"Now I'm free... Free-falling."[/Tom Petty]the bug I found when we could decorate doorways was objects could be placed in rooms they didn't belong.
this wasn't a game killer until you relocated the entrance to your base.
Once that was done it was very easy to misplace your entrance portal outside of your construction zone, could not be fixed.
the result would be, someone loads into your base, and would fall...
forever...
and ever...
amen.... -
Thanks! I had completely missed that these improvements had been made.
Other than the addition of using shift/alt/ctrl with the mouse in the base editor to control position/orientation of objects, and the hacked/magicked 'pads, was anything else about bases changed in the last 2-3 issues? I haven't seen any new decorative items, and AFAICT the existing ones haven't been given "undies".
I admit I haven't been reading *all* of the release notes for each issue. -
Quote:I personally use the cubicle found in other furniture. The walls of the cubicle act just like a regular wall. Additionally, now that items can be rotated, you can set them at an angle to get the effect of open doors and such. Perfect for an open safe. The only problem is that the safe door that is the personal salvage storage item is transparent from the inside looking out.
Rotated as in less than 90 degree jumps? If so, how is this achieved, as I still seem limited to the 90 degree turns. -
I use the Steel Cabinet. This cabinet can be "stacked" out horizontally from a wall, and wall items can be "attached" to the sides of it. Then sell off the Steel Cabinet(s). I hang 12 of them in midair that winds up inside the pillars of the Teleport Pod so I can "mount" the beacons to the front of the Pod's pillars.
