False Hope

There's no way of saving everything what we had, and/or were about to get with issue 24. This past weekend, whenever I've been able, I've been focused on preserving as much as I can for myself, to look back on later. I've also been reaching out to others to try to stay in touch, whatever happens.

But I'm also not going to speak against anyone trying to do more than I can. I know what the odds are, but I admire the effort, the commitment, the spirit. And if they do succeed in some measure, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

You can have my "false hope" when you pry it from my cold, dead hands, *******. I will not give up on this game. Like the others, I will continue to fight.

A cannot help but think of a quote from one of the greatest movies of all time.

Quote:
Aragorn: Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.

A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is NOT THIS DAY.

An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is NOT THIS DAY!

THIS day we FIGHT!

By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you STAND, MEN OF THE WEST!

I will not give up just yet.

Not this day!

Isn't that a quote from Captain Elizabeth Lochley on Babylon 5?

It's Delenn slightly misquoting John Sheridan in B5... he says, "If you're falling off a cliff, you might as well try to fly... you've got nothing to lose." She is quoting him to the Rangers just before the attack on Z'Ha'Dum.

Yup. I always liked her version better because mountain sounds more impressive than cliff.

I didn't want to have to post something like this here because the wound is still pretty fresh for some, but here goes...

Hope is the other face of denial. Even if it were possible to get NC Soft to backtrack on their decision, they've already disbanded Paragon Studios and those former employees are already looking for other jobs. Plus, there's no guarantee any of them would want to work for NC Soft anyway. In other words, Humpty Dumpty has fallen off the wall!!!!

The very best you can hope for is a COH server emulator. I don't want to discourage you from doing that. In fact, I think it would be pretty cool myself.

You guys are going through the grieving process. I understand that. I'm grieving too. Everyone is. Some of us were more invested in this game than others. It will take some people more time to work through this.

Everyone take care of yourselves.

But he's not telling it like it is. He's going full-swing in the opposite direction, and saying that since any hope is risky, the right thing to do is to give in immediately to despair. That's hogwash, and personally sounds pretty reprehensible to me.

I've got what I think is decent perspective here with respect to what we're fighting for. We're talking about the fight to save a game and its community. While that can be very important to some of us, it's not the same as fighting against repression, genocide, natural disaster, or any other of a number of situations where having hope against the odds is often held up as a human ideal. Hope is what gives people the motivation to act in dire circumstances. Without it, far more loss and darkness would have engulfed our world throughout history.

But we don't have to be facing awful, real-world consequences to celebrate holding out hope in the face of adversity. Hope can be harnessed to achieve great things in any context, not just the most terrible.

We need to keep our heads on straight, sure. Refusing to accept that the game will change at all, or perhaps even go away for ever, is very foolish. But hoping it might not? As long as you realize and accept that it might, there not that much harm in that, frankly.

At this point, I would give the odds of any producer making an offer for COH that'd be accepted from NCSoft as being slim to none.

That being said, I do not think the efforts of Tony and the others are being wasted.

Sometimes miracles happen.

And even if they don't, what this may tell NCSoft and the other producers out there is that there at least a niche market for something like COH and there are people out there willing to fight for the game.

That kind of loyalty is something I'd think any company would like in an increasingly competitive market.

COH may be doomed, but the best parts of COH-- the features such as the costume creator, the ease of teaming, super sidekicking, etc-- may live on in some other game somewhere.

That's worth fighting for. This community is worth fighting.

Nothing says we should go gently into that good night...

I tihnk most of us know if we cant somehow get NCsoft to sell the IP or even rent it out to somone that things get difficult, I felt the same way a while back depressed, ther eis no hope. Sure we have a 10% chance at best but thats better than nothing.

The end is just a new beginning, Goodbye all my coh friends and even the enemies, its been a blast I will miss you all. Thank you Paragon team, you gave me a home from home I will always appriciate it.

Maybe this effort will be fruitless, and maybe we will fail to save paragon city. But at least we can hold our heads high and say that we went down fighting instead of just throwing up our hands and walking away without even trying. And if we do go down in flames then I say we get as many fans, players, and devs together that we can at a comic-con or a last hero con and give paragon city the rip roaring sendoff party that it, and we, deserves.

I almost forgot...! I DO have something else to say - it's the quote in my signature. Taken from the good General's telegram, sent from the frontlines of battle whilst surrounded by the foe.

He went on to win.

LOL. Seriously? You act as if you're carrying out some important task. Really, you're just being a voice of doom and gloom. We've heard stuff like that all our lives, in a variety of contexts. We've heard it on these forums for years and years.

We choose to ignore you. Have a nice day.

With a force of 500,000 men the Nadir stood before the gates of Dros Delnoch. The most powerful fortress ever build. Because of politics the fort was poorly manned and now the end was nigh.

Druss a 60 year old hero, fat now with a bum knee and shoulder climbed down the first wall and approached the Khan of the Nadir. The Khan welcomed Druss to his camp as was the custom for a peaceable meal. Druss sat and they discussed the coming battle and the Khan said,"If you open the gates I will spare every man."

Druss replied,"I know you would for I admire you and wish I had served under you."
The Khan mused,"Yet you will not open the gate and so 30,000 of your men will die."
Druss snarled,"Many of your dog soldiers will also lie dead!"
The Khan smiled and said,"I expect nothing else but why must so many men die?"

Druss smiled now and replied, "If I showed up at the Dros and it was empty and the gate open do you think I would allow you to enter without a fight?"

"Ah, I understand now and yet it saddens me," the Khan sighed.

Druss stood up and declared,"I will stand because someone must always stand when they think wrong is being done. Whether you fall at the first blow or not doesn't matter."

Druss was right and I have always stood whether it was popular, costly to myself or had other consequences. I will do what I can to both make the remaining days for the players fun and heroic and I will do what I can to save a vestige of this fine game even if it is just the joy of the fight.

This is very true. I actually kind of miss the days when I had hope, life is a hell of a lot more depressing now than back then.
