Not Goodbye
Two of my favorite bugs were from the beta of inventions, and I got the Touch of Lady Grey: Chance for Negative Damage proc. In its first incarnation, the proc would, when it went off, literally do a negative amount of damage to your target, healing it. That was fixed, to be replaced by a different bug, making the enhancement into what I referred to as 'Touch of Lady Grey: Chance to One-Shot' -- when the proc went off, it would do some huge multiple of your target's base HP as its damage. Looking to see how far that went, I took the character with the enhancement slotted out to Crey's Folly and literally -- the first attack -- one-shotted Jurassik, doing '4.083e+006' points of damage to him. While laughing at the image of Jurassik falling over like four tons of bricks, I thought at the time that it was nice to see that there was a graceful fallover for amounts of damage too huge to be displayed in the normal numeric format.

Also: this is a case of tagging damage Cur instead of Abs - multiples of current rather than absolute points. That's the difference between dealing 100 damage and 100xTargetHealth damage. The Indominable Will bug mentioned above was a case of tagging a resistance power Cur instead of Res. Buff Psionic Res and you get psionic resistance. Buff Psionic Cur and you deal Psionic Cur damage. Except that number is positive and not negative, which means in dealing a positive value instead of negative it actually delivers a Psionic typed heal.
*And then* resistance buffs like all buffs normally have a duration. But damage doesn't. And now we know what happens when you give damage a duration, but no activation period. The game tries to apply the heal as fast as possible, constantly during the duration. Which is about eight times per second.
For those who have never seen it before, this video probably shows the delivery of the highest amount of damage the game could deliver reproducibly in a non-bugged situation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTAcSMg6gp0
That's the Protector server, doing what I suggested on the forums would be generating the most damage in a single attack: pulling Kronos onto a Steel Canyon building, and watching the detonation hit for about 24 million points of damage (unfortunately, no floating text).
We are crazy, crazy players.

More bugs (but some may have been fixed):
- For awhile, Heroes could go into PvP zones and meet up with friends who were playing Villainous Mind Control Dominators, get confused, go back to their zones with their Confused flag still set and stay confused until the duration wore off and attack players in the Hero zones. If a Mind Controller or Illusion Controller (with Deceive) was confused, they could continue the fun by trying to Confuse/Mass Confuse/Deceive enemy-conning Heroes. The fun could never stop ... well, until a patch which cleared all debuffs and mez flags on players who were zoning from PvP zones back to their side. Aww!
- (This was recently patched.) The Clockwork Paladins in Kings Row would rampage through the zone collecting Clockwork followers. When they reached the end-point in their rampage path (usually behind the Bank), they would sit on those small mounds (hills) and wait for someone (or something?) to engage them. Once engaged, they would start to spawn Summoned Clockwork. And wouldn't stop until one of two conditions was met: (1) it was defeated or (2) zone reset (which happens primarily only when the server reboots although GMs and Devs can reset a zone). When three (3) Paladins gather, that's a lot of Summoned Clockwork -- so much, in fact, the graphics engine can only render a specific number of objects in a view. I would often see a lot of them, but no Paladin(s). An additional behavior is that three (3) Paladins can fill the spawn table for the zone in about 20 minutes. You have a 'Defeat Lost' or 'Defeat Skulls' mission in KR? Good luck. (*SPOILER* In Issue 24, this event was changed so that only one Paladin is spawned and is a very localized event to around the Kings Row Bank area.)
- When Beta-testing AE, I wanted to see just what all we could do. For giggles, I created an AE mission where the player rescued a level 54(?) Ghost Widow Arch-Villain and went after a level 54 Lord Recluse Arch-Villain. I wanted to see who would win in such a fight. The Lord Recluse AI has HP trigger points where it summons Bane Spider Executioners to his side -- being an Incarnate Mastermind and leader of Arachnos and all that -- which only added Dark Regeneration fodder for Ghost Widow's PBAoE Self-Heal. It took her awhile, but she finally held Lord Recluse with her Soul Storm and then took him out. As an addendum, Lord Recluse kicked Captain Mako, Black Scorpion and Scirocco in the junk. Hard. (This may still be possible. I haven't tried it since that test on Beta.)
- Arcanaville posted about the posting pictures into Global Chat. There was also the bug where you could post hyperlinks to web sites. One Meat**** or Goats*** link and I think the error was clearly visible and needed to be fixed NOW ... and it was in the next hotfix.

My favorite probably-not-a-bug:
Mission doors for most missions are selected randomly from the set of all doors that meet certain criteria, eg. "warehouse door in Atlas Park". When the limit on the mission list was raised from three to seven, I wondered what would happen if you accepted a mission, but there were no doors meeting the criteria that didn't already have a mission attached to them. After some effort, I found the answer: I've got a character with two missions associated with a single door (one of the Portal Corps portals). Going through the door seems to pick the first one on the list.
I never found many bugs or glitches that weren't uncovered my others, but I LOVED finding holes in the world.
The hole in Cap Au Diable was the most amusing because it was gigantic, a missing wall in the main skyscraper of the city. Anyone with fly could scoot on up there and fall down the inside of the building to the underworld. I remember it was the first one I reported and it was two years before they finally fixed it.
There was another in Grandville, a missing elevator shaft you could just hop down. It should have been more obvious than the Cap one but Grandville is a mess of pipes and metal and you could walk right by this hole without seeing it.
Then there were the exist-a-nearby-door-when-you-logging feature that allowed you to slip under some zones just by logging out near a cave door that was under a hill.
And Croatoa has a missing invisible wall between two trees you could slip behind the world with.
The best one... was the one I kept to myself and a few buddies.
Atlas Park Vanguard entrance. That tiny gap between the stairs and the plants here you can teleport through and end up in the underworld of AP itself. I was so proud of myself for finding this one because it was so ridiculously tiny.

Some of my favorite bugs,
First off is here.
Hidden under the arena of Peregrine Island was this room. Loved the effects, although the center column FX does look familiar.
Second one was bug involving PI's Loading edge. If you were unaware you can zone out of PI by flying off the edge of the map, instead of by the Ferry, This was even before GR's switching.
However at one time traveling this way wound up having me zone in outside the map of Talos island.
Some others,
If you were in the right spot in the Rikti raid you could wind up under the Mothership's shield and not transported out.
Zoning back inside the AE's beam.
'Magic Desks,' For all intents and reason this always seemed like a bug. However i have seen some amazing works by players because of it.
~ I am Mender Sirbil Xe I do not know who this Ex Libris is that you speak of. ~
Posted this in my own thread, then found this..
It was a few months after we got the alignment system.
My latest toon, a dp/mm blaster, had just become a Rogue, and I was doing lvl arcs in GV with him.
I was working on Pithers arc, and I finished his mission in the shard map, wherre you free Olivia Darque. I finished, getting the 5 merits for the arc. Then the mission has a 'find mission exit' so I used oro to get out. I think then I got invited to do something else and switched toons.
A few days later, I logged him in again, and Flashback TP'd (where you start a flashback arc, just to get to the zone the contact is in) to RWZ for a raid and then went blueside for a tf.
Then I went to call teh contact, to turn the arc in (in was the LAST mission in the arc) and found..it had reset THAT mission. So I went back in, seeing what would happen if I finished it again. Another 5 merits!
So being the devious person I am..I tried it again. Finish mission, oro out, head to rwz, zone to blue, back to oro..redo mission. Another 5 merits! Exploit found!
Ah ha! I hear you say..only 5 merits? Well..yes. Till I got a toon who was 80% through Unais utterly long and stupid boring arc. For those who dont know..this is like 25 missions, and gives 41 merits. 41!
So, I got to the last mission, killing Requiem. Then I would do the following.
Enter, kill Requiem as an EB, usually netting a shard, rare recipes, or purples (I got a few)
Then Id die, on purpose, in order to base TP
Using base Oro, I'd tp to the rwz and Laeventra, then zoning to Cap, to 'switch' sides.
Once in cap, Oro back to blueside, and TP back to Unai via flashback tp.
Then, reselect his now Reset mission.
In summary..41 merits in under FIVE minutes.
I made about..oh..30k? merits in 2 weeks. Till they fixed it. As far as I know, I NEVER saw any hint of others using, finding this particular exploit. WHich, I did not tell anyone about.
After having a capped merit toon..reward merits lost any real value to me.
Ahh...good times.

There are two RickRolls that surpass the original for me.
One was Leandro's epic RickRoll of Lord Recluse. The other was Ex Libris et al RickRolling us at Karaoke during the first HeroCon. I barely remember blurred pieces of the second one, but I've seen pictures so I know I was there for it. |
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
Some great bugs in here. The picture I wont quote we internally called the "Abomination" bug and it cropped up a few different times. Because of the content it was one of those bugs we had to squash immediately and make sure people didnt really post pics of it.

Some of the bugs I got hit with:
Falling through the bridge in Talos. I could see everything above me. Need to have a GM come and TP me to out.
I also got hit with a bugged Newspaper Mission in Sharkhead. It was a level 23 Mission to recover "Forumla 9" or something. Well the mission spawned level 40+ Crey Paragon Protectors. I held on to that mission for years, helping people get the Infiltrator Badge to unlock Viridian.

Not a bug, but something that didn't make it out of beta for obvious reasons:
Original Ninja Run icon, mirrored and flipped. Loved when Posi saw this and was like, "Umm. no. This will be changed."

There were four Arachnoid Bosses in that mission. I was playing on 0x8 and was level 35. I had to call in reinforcements, because the Super Arachnoids spawned at 40.
That's the face-turned-90 bug I mentioned above, but I couldn't find a cap of it. It was really bizarre.

I fought a Stealth Titan once. I was the only team member with a PBAOE, so it was very slow, standing there and hitting Spin (and eventually Psychic Wail when it was up) until it finally went down.
That mission was a kill-all. Aaargh.

I think one of my favorite bugs had to the "Gauntlet makes every Tanker attack into an aoe." I know there's a video of it somewhere, but I'd probably have to dig for that.
Aside from that, I hold a special love for door mission bugs. In the CoV beta, exiting a mission and getting dumped into Atlas Park was hilarious. Sneaking around the drones, having Ms. Liberty tell you to "get out there and do some villainy," nabbing badges, and so on. The more recent TPN trial bug dumping teams into random missions was great too.
