Go to the forums and read about their progress in creating a player run server for CoH, THIS IS COH'S BEST CHANCE.

Coders are needed quickly as there is work to be done that can't be done once the servers are down.

NCsoft will not make any arrangement to keep any form of City of Heroes running. It's that stark and that simple.

If this was a business decision, made on the grounds of making more money per year, then they would be open to negotiation. Selling a property is more valuable than torpedoing it. But it isn't. CoX is still profitable. Not hugely, but profit is profit. And it's not like they can 'use the talent elsewhere', as they've kicked them all out. From the standpoint of business interest, this decision is stupid.

This is an executive decision. It's based on what's best for the executives in charge, and that is not at all the same thing as what's good for the business.

Here's what's happened and what will happen.

NCsoft reported lower quarterly earnings. There are reasons for this; obvious ones. Like making a big-game title that has reported all its costs but none of its profits. But an executive has to justify themselves to a board. And if you just say 'ignore the losses, we'll make money' on a game you didn't greenlight, you don't get to take any credit.

So they've looked for a game they can justify cancelling. An old game that went F2P is a perfect target. Not because it's unprofitable, but because you can easily pretend that it was the problem. They kill the game, and talk about how they've taken decisive actiopn to save profitys. And then when the profits of the huge new game come in, they can use their action to try and take credit for the profit.

This action has been made so some executive can spin a story of their decisive action saving the company lots of money and making it even more, so they can get a higher salary in the next job. It has been made solely for this purpose. It serves no other purpose. It does nothing good for the company on any level, and in fact has cut off a small but reliable revenue stream.

And that is why they will not sell the IP.

As soon as they sell the IP, they will have to concede that it is still valuable. As soon as they sell the IP in a movement initiated by the players, they seem reactionary and foolish for having not done that themselves. If they do not torpedo the IP, it will be tantamount to admitting that their actions were those of sociopathic greed.

Executive business is the most egotistical level of industry in the world, by orders of magnitude, and would rather literally destroy itself than concede being wrong. And that is exactly what they will do here.

I've got $500 I can throw into this, or whatever project seems like it's going to work. And if you guys need extra coders, I'll freakin' learn how to make the blasted thing work.

Or at least try. The money thing i can reasonably guarantee, at any rate. Good luck Tony, and thank you.

Interesting idea.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that NCSoft will not part with the IP, and that if CoH is to continue, it will be due to reverse-engineering and new development.

That said, since I will no longer have a subscription fee, I would be happy to offer that to your endeavor. In fact, if a largish percentage of current subscribers could be convinced to do just that, that would provide a fair amount of money.

I'm a database application programmer - not a game programmer - so I don't know how much help I would be for a reverse-engineering effort. PM me if you want to anyway.

Maybe we should call this community edition of the game "City of Titans"?

I'm definitely interested in being part of this project in some fashion if it has legs, whether it's to assist with whatever I can spare financially or help provide story framework for a new player-created world. I'm more than a bit intrigued by the possibilities here.

Also if anyone has a graphical editor / map creator where you can use the pigg files to make a generated map / zone like AE and link in the character creator for solo content I'd throw a few bills at that. I mostly solo and use screen caps for the stories I'm writing so that would be nice, especially if they could include the beta content with the tested powersets, Rogue Packs, and Tech Knight gear. If someone actually gets a server running I'll spend another month in the car / storage unit and kick in a thou.

I am with you, you have my sword, so to speak. This game has connected me with friends I would never have had prior to it. It has been there for me through Iraq, and two divorces. My daughter plays "dress up" with the costume editor when she's here...

Now all that ends... Now the story is over...

I for one, am willing to put in on a kickstarter, sign up for a year of subscription fees at a time if need be, to give you all the money needed to either run a private server, or too get the IP outright.

CoH is a proven IP and a proven commodity, I think with a kickstarter as seed money you might even get a bank to back you on it as a start up business.

Tony, you might want to (have to) look at indiegogo.com as a possible crowdfunding source.

Kickstarter has some pecularities in it regarding what it will allow to be crowdfunded.

It's more of a 'we fund your creation' idea, and since you're trying to fund the purchase of something that's already built...they might say no. Not saying that they will, but it's worth looking at indiegogo as well.
