Where are you going?
I have 10+ games, and none of them compare to CoH! But if I had a choice, I'd choose Star Trek Online. My character Matthew Thomas of the USS Journey is almost a commander.

As little offense intended by this as possible, but you sound unpleasable to me. You're just finding things to complain about ((Star Wars small and boring. Really? Did you even get past the tutorial planets? And CO. Ugly. You've been playing CoH for years...)) and aren't even really trying to get into anything.
On the one hand, I can't blame you. CoH is one of my favorites. But on the other, you've gotta give a little sometimes. |
I'll second that SW:TOR is boring. It's just incredibly tedious. Just thinking about it fills me with ennui.
And Fantasy-themed games just don't excite me. It just feels like well-chewed meat. A Fantasy novel has to be really good to interest me at all, and so far no Fantasy game I've found rises to the level of even the most mediocre Fantasy novel.

I'll be back to Star Wars because it's where I know people.
But I'm still looking for anything else that is positive. I looked at Secret World, I don't want something that bleak and depressing all the time.
I'll be in the next Xcom when it launches. Hopefully something else worthwhile will come along.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
Some globals and I are playing GW2. It is a huge learning curve for me as the only MMO I have ever really put any time into is COH.
I tried DCUO and CO and just well.. meh; plus let's be honest here from all the rumors and financials neither is doing particularly well.
So while I am moving to GW2 I can say with a fair amount of certainty that my "game time" is going to be significantly less....because nothing compares to COH imo.
No, he's right. CO *is* ugly. Beyond ugly, it's fugly. It's also insulting with its terrible attempts at comedy, with an entire game written by people who think superheroes and comic books are idiotic. CoH does show its age, but it's a decent-looking game.

I think I may be done with MMOs. I am still really sad about this though.

I'll keep playing Aion, GW, GW2 and Lineage II, have a lifesub to STO but that game is meh, and never tried WoW, no interest.
I'm not playing any other MMOs. I didn't enjoy WoW, Aion, GW, RO, GE, or CO. I have no idea where I'm going to go now.
Mostly I don't know what to do with my modern-day themed characters, or Arachnos-inspired characters. I just can't take characters like these to some medieval fantasy setting game. Where is everyone going? I'd like some ideas and some discussions on what games offer what. |

"The tip of a shoelace is called an aglet, its true purpose is sinister." The Question
Looks like I will be working on my telnet BBS again, Ive neglected it far to long... I'm doing a rebang of Tradewars 2002 this Saturday, so if anyone feels nostalgic come on by http://www.gargoyleslanding.com for some old style text/ANSI based fun. I don't think that a Superhero door game is available though
I'll be going back to the old standby: Progress Quest. They even have an online game now: http://progressquest.com/play/
I had avoided MMOs until a friend talked me into CoH back in 2005. Before that, it was Neverwinter Nights II, Icewind Dale, Starcraft, Warcraft II, and stuff like that. I've tried SW:TOR and LOTRO, but it's frustrating not even being able to match Sprint speed or a hero's base jump height, much less never being able to Fly. And in the PC games, I loved the level-makers and customizing things, just like how in CoH I could make exactly the character I wanted, how I wanted.
Looking forward to Torchlight 2, or Warhammer 40k if it comes out. Prolly read more, too. Oh yeah, and Master of Orion, the first version.
The boss at the very end. He'd use a Hold on me while I was trying to get close to him, and while I was slamming on the Z key over and over in an attempt to escape (that can't be good for the keyboard), he'd use some sort of one-hit-kill attack on me. Lather, rinse, repeat. (The pre-fight text said I had to block when something-or-other appeared above the boss's head, but nothing ever appeared above the boss's head. Attacks just came out of nowhere. Might be related to having to play through Crossover and Wineskin, which caused a lot of visual errors) |

Was briefly considering going back to CO, and I started my "skeptical" thread over there. I'm completely underwhelmed by how that game has progressed in 3 years. As someone mentioned either on this forum or over at CO (I can't remember which, I've been playing forum tag all day), its like CO came out first and then they made COH later after they learned from their earlier mistakes. Its one of the most surreal things in MMOs.
But then I realized I already have a sub with The Secret World I haven't touched in a few weeks. I had to take a break from TSW because they are going through a drama bomb of their own, albeit not quite like this one. But the BS with COH has given me fresh perspective. TSW is a good game, and the disappointments they are experiencing now look minor by comparison. In time I think it will be a great game like COH is today. The game has a lot of great things going for it that they will build off of. I wish there was some way for ex-Paragon Studios employees to get involved with that franchise. |
I played a trial not long ago, and I plan to buy it next month, it's a fantastic game.
I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
I've always juggled two (sometimes three!) MMOs at a time, but it's always been that case that one of those was City of Heroes.
My current secondary MMO is The Secret World, though I suppose it's about to become my primary. I like it quite a lot, but it's certainly no City of Heroes. :\ There's very few other games out there right now and very few games on the horizon that interest me.
If I were to hypothetically play one of those other Superhero MMOs, it'd be DCUO. I've played it before, and it's.... fun, but very shallow and pales in comparison to City of Heroes.
I did not like Champions Online at all.
Virtue 50s:
Ice/Ice Blaster, Fire/Fire Dominator, Mind/Emp Controller, Shield/Axe Tanker, Spines/Regen Scrapper, Rad/Pain Corruptor, Petless Thugs/Traps MM(WHY!?), Widow

And don't get me started on the "comedy." Remember how I complained about the 2005 City of Heroes original content having been written as a moral lesson by someone who thought evil was horrible and villain players should feel horrible for playing villains? Well, Champions Online seems to have been written by someone who thought comic books were stupid and made a while game mocking them. Now, I don't like comic books all that much, but I'll be damned before I play a game that takes the piss out of the very source material I'm supposed to be playing it for. It's like the Champions writers are telling me: "Comic books are stupid and you're stupid for liking them! Let's all laugh at how stupid we all are!"
City of Heroes is the only MMO... Nay, the only game I've ever seen which manages to be so ludicrously insane in its storytelling audacity, and yet at the same time take itself perfectly seriously without necessarily being "gritty." You just don't see that anywhere else.

Marvel Heroes is starting to looks like X-Men Legends or Marvel Ultimate Alliance which is a good thing. It will not Scratch my customize your hero MMO itch but it will soothe my must have a comic book game itch.
X-Men Legends was an amazing game.
I played Champions Online in beta, popped back for a brief look when it went F2P, and had another quick look a couple of weeks back, and I still think my girlfriend's description sums it up best. She took one look and said "Oh my gawd, it looks like CoH done by chavs!"
Tacky, that's the word really. Both visually and in story terms. And the combat mechanic has always felt like I was trying to play a console game while wearing boxing gloves. For me, the only thing CO has going for it is the fact you can make toons that have the classic "mask with glowing white eyes" look so iconic of many comicbook heroes.
So Champions? Eh....no.
All I've seen of DCUO has been gameplay videos that haven't really impressed, topped off by a US friend's opinion that DCUO is "...basically a console game for button-mashing kiddies". So no to that too.
And as far as I can see right now, that about wraps it up for the choice of available MMOs where the emphasis is on unique character creation and superheroic themed powers.
*shrug*
Other games then?
Used to play WoW long ago, no way in hell I'm going back there again. I reckon WoW has a sort of gaming escape velocity to it which, once reached, allows the ex-player to float free and look back down at what they've left behind, and say "Whatever did I see in that anyway?"
Can't go back to Tabula Rasa because NCSoft killed that too long ago of course...
Might pop in to SWTOR when it goes F2P - I was there for a couple of months at launch and got quite comfy, though never as comfy as I was in SWG...before SOE gave Galaxies the "New Game Experience" lobotomy that ultimately caused its demise after a long illness, bravely borne.
What is it about games publishers killing games anyway? Reminds me of when Star Trek was originally screened in the 1960s and the network execs messed its scheduling about and then eventually canned the series, all the time failing to realise that while the show may not have been bringing in ever more new viewers every week, the core number of viewers watching the show was fiercely loyal, dedicated, and reliable.
Like CoH fans today.
CoH may not have been a growing profit earner for NCSoft, but in an unstable economic world it offered something far more valuable - constancy.
*sigh*
Anyway, I digress.
So talking of Star Trek, there's always Star Trek Online. I was fortunate enough to win a lifetime sub to it not long after launch, and while it definitely has its flaws (the ground combat is nearly as frustrating and cumbersome as Champions Online for instance) it does have a lot going for it in terms of story and look, so perhaps I'll be stopping in there more often now I'm having to hang up my spandex.
As for the future?
Well, certainly not anything under the NCSoft banner, that's for sure. They've kicked me in the gaming nuts twice now with their closure of Tabula Rasa and now City of Heroes, so there's no way I'm going to invite them to kick me a third time!
Today I've downloaded and tried Champions and DCU.....it looks like I don't have a future in multiplayer online games.
@Joshua.
Ill also be one of the homeless ones.
Besides CoH, I know nothing about other MMOs.
City of Heroes was the only MMO I played. I have never played any MMO prior. I did try WoW many years ago for a week but I never got into it.
Right now, CoH is or was the only reason why I own/built a desktop. I guess my desktop will be getting a break.
I think for now, I am going back to my X-Box 360.
I tried SWToR. It got old and isn't what it should have been. TSW was okay but by the time I hit Egypt I had enough. I am in GW2 now, but I am waiting on Wildstar and if it ever happens The World of Darkness. Vampires the Masquerade:Bloodlines is still one of my favorite games. It looks like CCP is putting resources into it now.

I have a lifetime sub to CO bought during beta that I've still not gotten its value in playtime from yet. Tried playing CO over my weekend (I tried to play CoH but it was just too depressing) and found that it's even worse than it used to be. You can pretty much mow down small groups of bad guys, but then you hit the Super Villain in the mission arc and get stomped into the ground. Actually, he does more than stomp you into the ground but I can't say it in a family friendly forum. At least that's what it feels like when you realize there is no possibility whatsoever of winning the fight.
Maybe CoH spoiled me, since in all my years here I only ever once ran into something that one of my characters could not solo even with Shivans and chiclets. I guess maybe I'll finally watch some of the DVDs I keep buying and haven't watched yet.
