Where are you going?
All the while I had to listen to that terrible voice-acting. (It was cheesy, but it was cheesy in a way that was trying to be cheesy, and that grates on my nerves. The whole game feels like a parody of comic books rather than an homage to them like CoH does)

I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
Um, I'm getting out of the way of the satellite cannon, and blocking when a symbol appears (which still knocks off about 1/4 to 1/3 of my health), and then dying immediately when I mistime a block and get held or knocked back (because he's still hitting me while I'm trying to escape the hold or standing up) Meanwhile, I have to hit him with my strongest attack charged to max to take off even a tiny sliver of health, and if I stop to charge I get nailed, so I just have to whittle him down with my weak attack.
Eventually, the only way I could beat him was to fight him until I was down to about 1/4 health (knocking off a few pixels of his health bar), run far enough away that the game would consider me out of combat so I could heal, then run back and knock off a few more pixels of health, repeat until I finally won. Took at least a half-hour. At one point I got fed up and tried to leave to find someone to team with, but it wouldn't let me out of the mission, so I just had to grit my teeth, said "This is going to suck", and went back to whittling him down a pixel at a time. And it did, indeed, suck. If that's what the tutorial boss a boss supposedly designed for brand-new players who know nothing about the game is like, I hate to think what the real bosses are like. Sounds like what I went through. I've run that tutorial dozens of times between beta and when I'd last played and you had to run it, and always had a tough but doable fight. This last weekend I ran it for the first time in a couple years (since I hadn't played for a couple years and wanted to refamiliarize myself with the gameplay) and couldn't believe how much they'd pumped him up. I died multiple times.

Arc #271637 - Welcome to M.A.G.I. - An alternative first story arc for magic origin heroes. At Hero Registration you heard the jokes about Azuria always losing things. When she loses the entire M.A.G.I. vault, you are chosen to find it.
As an aside, I've mentioned a couple of times in this thread my support the Cryptic-license death theory. While it was clearly logical, it was also apparently false as the license had no expiration. Consider this a retraction of my own contribution to the rumor-mongering.
And, on topic, I did indeed go ahead and do a short sub to SWtoR. So much like classic Bioware that the nostalgia was worth it.
Do like The Secret World but my trial is expiring. It is probably well worth it, and I recommend you try it if you haven't. I'm just a one MMO at a time guy.

I don't know how else to help you. You should have a healing patch from the tutorial missions down on your hot bar, you can use that to help. Otherwise I've never had that hard a time with it. It can be a close fight, but I've just always managed.
Bosses are...well, it depends on the boss. Some of them have gimmicks "Run around and activate all the statues then beat on the boss while they are vulnerable" and some of them are just 'burn it down' fights. If you don't have a good defensive skill then you'd sure as hell better have a healing one, because even with good reflexes they can eat your health like nobodies buisness.
"I have something to say! It's better to burn out then to fade away!"
I have a lifetime sub to CO bought during beta that I've still not gotten its value in playtime from yet. Tried playing CO over my weekend (I tried to play CoH but it was just too depressing) and found that it's even worse than it used to be. You can pretty much mow down small groups of bad guys, but then you hit the Super Villain in the mission arc and get stomped into the ground. Actually, he does more than stomp you into the ground but I can't say it in a family friendly forum. At least that's what it feels like when you realize there is no possibility whatsoever of winning the fight.
Maybe CoH spoiled me, since in all my years here I only ever once ran into something that one of my characters could not solo even with Shivans and chiclets. I guess maybe I'll finally watch some of the DVDs I keep buying and haven't watched yet. |

Marvel Heroes is starting to looks like X-Men Legends or Marvel Ultimate Alliance which is a good thing. It will not Scratch my customize your hero MMO itch but it will soothe my must have a comic book game itch.
X-Men Legends was an amazing game. |
I will probably give MH a shot... unless CoH gets a last minute rescue...
I had the healing patch. I used the healing patch. I needed a lot more healing patches.
I don't know when the last time you did the tutorial was (especially since, from what Gemini just said, he's been made harder), but that guy just tore through me on two different characters.
As an aside, I don't like CO's "inspiration" system at all (where it activates right when you pick it up). I found that whenever I had the time to actually pick it up, it meant I didn't actually need the boost right then and there, and by the time I got to the next enemy group it had already worn off. Glancing at the Wiki, CO's buffs are also painfully short compared to CoH's. (The duration of Build Up in CoH would be considered one of the longer self-buffs in CO, it appears)
Basically, the problem I have with the game is that it doesn't make me feel super. Telling me, essentially, that I'm too incompetent for the tutorial doesn't actually make me feel super, strangely enough.

If you right click on your chat tabs, you will bring up a second window. On the Channels tab, type in "CoX Refugees" (case sensitive) and click join. Lots of CoH players in there, and some would be willing to help you.

I'll be in Star Wars: The Old Republic. I've been playing it since beta and really love it. I especially like how story-driven it is, and rewards my altitis as much as CoH did, but in a different way with different stories per class. It has become my main MMORPG currently. My real life friends, relatives (same guys I played with in CoH) and I are on The Ebon Hawk server.
We've also played STO and DCUO and log in once in a while, but I can't say we're still really active on them anymore.
I've tried The Secret World during beta. I liked the concept behind it, but was just overall not enticed by it when I finally played. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I think SWTOR spoiled me or something.
I'm also trying out Guild Wars 2. We bought copies of it, but even though we like it so far, it will probably just be a backup MMO.
Whelp..... Diablo III is a NO.
*I cant customise my character? WTF?
*I cant change my point of view? Ever? WTF?
*I can't even mousewheel closer to get a good look at my character? WTF?
*I cant target through Tab? WTF?
....I'm sure there's more, I'll play around with it a bit more but so far, I dont think I'm gonna be there. *sigh*
What drama is TSW going through?
I played a trial not long ago, and I plan to buy it next month, it's a fantastic game. |
They said they're still going to go as planned as far as content development is concerned but i'm sure all that will somehow have some sort of impact.
Funcom quarterly report
There's been a few news items with The Secret World. Funcom's CEO stepped down just before it went live, their shares took 40% drop after the launch, layoffs, and sales were only a bit over 200k copies which was below expectations which cost them $35mil impairment charge.

Side note: City of heroes has a *high* retention ratio of roughly 75% i believe (I remember reading in a presentation, possibly the 7 year presentation where the number of characters created was popped up).
The more I hear of CO's reaction to the shutdown, the more sure I am that I'll be going over there if we cannot save our game.
I'll just have to look past how obviously worse it is
Defensive skills slotted and picking up a heal. Since you are lifetime you can go freeform, I suggest doing that and picking up something like Invulnerable and buffing it up.
|
And, yeah, after playing a half dozen of my dozen characters it became painfully clear to me I need to work a heal into all my builds. Luckily I apparently have about 6 respecs and an extra free in all of them.
The only one of those fights that left me still not seeing any way to beat it, though (apparently I played ALOT over the weekend, more than I realized), was running the Whiteout comic series and facing an alien super villain who summons about 4 or 5 villains, and you're locked in a room with them, while all they all spam charge-up attacks. I either block and die slow, or try to attack and die fast.

Oh goodie. I tried logging into Champions Online's forums to size up my options and it seems like my account name changed because I used "Stardiver" to sign up for... Something. Rusty Hearts, I think. And now there's no way that I can find to change my user name at all. Ugh...

Did it the other day. It was pretty easy. I died once cause I wasn't paying attention.
|
We're not saying you're incompetent, you put that word in there, not us. Are we puzzled that you could be having such a hard time against him? Yes, but we haven't been calling you names. That's unfair. |
And that was a Tank class. I can't imagine how quickly a non-Tank would have been shredded by him. (I'm not sure what the game considers a "Tank", either. Until Level 8, a Glacier seems to be nothing but an underpowered Ice Blaster)
So, since it's easy for others, that suggests that I'm the one doing something wrong, because blocking should somehow prevent all damage, or my attacks should be knocking off more than a pixel of health per dozen shots, or there's some secret button combination that lets me dodge his heavy-hitting attacks entirely that the game doesn't tell you, or something that I "should" know but don't.

I'm Sgt. Bluestone on there (named after - but explicitly not the same person as - my CoH Stone/Stone Tanker, Sgt. Greenstone).

Also, your individual character name won't help anyone find you. Character names in CO are non-unique (There can be 100s of characters named "Thunder Knight" for instance). This is necessary because the game uses a one server system that just instances itself when it gets loaded. Positive side effect of never needing to try to get a name and have it come up as taken. Instead, /tells are handled through global names. PM me here for my global, I will help you out if you need it.

I'm downloading the the client patch for CO right now.
It seems I can still access my Cryptic account using my Cobra Man name that I used in beta testing.
