  1. It's super hero or bust for me, and Champions Online will probably be my stop gap until another game truly impresses me. DCUO? Maybe, but the times I have tried it I really didn't like the limited character creation.

Marvel Heroes is going to be doing closed Beta testing. I signed up for an account... we'll see what happens with that, but expecting it to be a similar experience to DCUO.
  2. After going to bed early, and then waking up way earlier than I normally do, I sent my response to this bit of "news" to all the NCSoft emails I have at my disposal:

"Really? Giving up a month after you announce you no longer are interested in publishing the game? And you expect us to be satisfied with that? Don't make me laugh. Every successful sale of any commodity I have ever seen has been made with rumors and news reports of the impending sale showing up in various sources. We have seen none of this. All indications have been that NCSoft has had NO interest in selling City of Heroes, that you just want to kill our beloved game and wash the virtual blood off your hands.

The end is not until you, NCSoft sees it's own sunset, or City of Heroes finds a new home. Until then you should expect us, the fans of City of Heroes, to continue to make noise, continue to refuse your resignation, to continue to fight for the game that we love.

Do yourself a favor, if you want to prove to us that you can not sell the IP, prove it. Put it up for sale PUBLICLY. Announce to the world that you are willing to sell to the highest bidder. See what kind of reaction you get from that.

    A City of Heroes Player"

Game play is different, but just takes getting used to, my Dark Avenger toon was able to solo 5+ mobs at level 6, would have been toast in CoX.

However the community I find is very lacking. The broadcasts are random chat noise, no 'level 6 group LFM' if fact been playing 2 weeks and have never seen anyone LFM. The teams i was invited to was just random invites where the leader said nothing then quit a few minutes later.

I tried to join a chat channel, however no chat channels are listed, you have to know the name of it to join. Eveventually joined CoX channel, but even so there is a distinct lack of teaming as I expressed to the channel 'does anyone ever team?' and got the reply 'not really'.

This aspect of the game sucks but I am still trying to work the game as there are no other alternatives.
The community and teaming issues may end up resolved if and when CoH goes dark and a bunch of us migrate over. I've played it a bit, and the corny names people give their toons, etc. does get to me, but see some of that in CoH, too.

Still, for me it plays like CoH lite, and as such I don't think I will ever end up shelling out any money on it.

    Taken from this....

"We’ve been very lucky to land some great talent from 38 Studios and Paragon Studios."

To me, this news does not bode well for any hope of the 'City of' franchise being saved.

I do not share this news to discourage further attempts at saving CoH, however to demonstrate that the efforts might be in vain at this point. Afterall, if the staff of Paragon Studios is moving on....what would our game be like with out them?

Most of the efforts being made to save the game assumed that NCSoft would not be in the picture... and Paragon Studios was/is OWNED by NCSoft.

Yes, it's sad that PS will never get to complete the works they still had in the fires, but that was pretty much a given the day NCSoft dropped the bomb on us all.

So rather than letting me play the game they would prefer to give us our money back.
Have you tried logging in? You should still be able to play... until the servers are shut down.

After that, there is still a glimmer of hope that someone else will make a bid, and NCSoft will sell... or one of the other Save COH plans might pull thru.

All the refund really does is solidify NCSoft no longer publishing the game.
  6. Also, don't forget the Going Rogue Soundtrack is available on Amazon:

What I'm HOPING for is that the reason they aren't giving everyone free VIP is because there is still a possibility that the game may end up in the hands of another company. If said new company keeps the existing F2P structure, switching people that are currently playing on Free accounts to VIP would screw up the records.

Wishful thinking? Maybe... but I'd rather keep a slim ray of hope rather than the alternative dark depression.

Upping the graphics and removing the "black comic book outline" go a long way. I get where they were going though, they wanted the look of the game to match the old champion pen and paper books.

I'm enjoying Champions a lot more than I thought. I've never been a Dragon/Fantasy type of game player. And I played the old school Champions Pen and Paper back in the day, so this game works out just fine for me.

The toon creator is a lot more versatile than COH's, and you can create just about anything.

*hint join the "COX" channel if you decide to play. Lot's of help and friendly COH'rs there.
If, and only if, which is probably just a matter of when, but I'm not giving up yet, CoH goes dark I may give CO another try based on what you've said here.

Might also give DCUO another shot... and there's also Marvel Heroes that will be in limited Beta come October...

Won't be going to any game that isn't Super Heroes, though.
  9. The news that NCSoft will be giving out refunds is good news. Thank you, Z.

Better news, of course, would be news of CoH some how, some way continuing, or being relaunched. There is no reason to believe, at this juncture, that that might not still be possible.

Keep playing and enjoying the time we have left with the game... and keep hoping and working towards a brighter tomorrow.

As long as we continue to make noise, and I mean continue, even if the game's plug is pulled, someone may eventually here our united voices and do something about relaunching the game.

(Also note that in Star Trek's case it's popularity INCREASED after the original show's death.)

    • I read up on the legalities of the situation before posting this Call to Action, and I am convinced that I am well within my rights to do what I did. However, I want NCsoft to understand that this isn't about exercising legal rights, it is about trying to reach people with the ultimate authority to determine the fate of City of Heroes. I have said all along that this is not a campaign of annoyance or denial of service and repeatedly requested that the community be respectful and positive and constructive. Having read many of your e-mails, I believe that this goal was achieved admirably and that our community was well-represented.
    • I believe that everyone in our community who would want to contact management at NCsoft has now had ample opportunity to do so. Accordingly, I do want to minimize the opportunity for others who might have an ax to grind with NCsoft in the future to come along and find this information and use it for ill purposes.
    • I believe that by now, executive management at NCsoft has gotten adequate representation of our community, for better or for worse. While we could continue sending e-mails, by now I'm sure that they will likely not be read. If you didn't get a chance to convey your story, I apologize, but such is the nature of some of these calls to action, that they will be time-sensitive.
    • Even though it is not an especially positive response, it is not an especially negative or threatening one, either. Frankly, I expected a bit worse than it is. Accordingly, I want to extend them the courtesy of complying with the request as a good-faith gesture.
I had posted the addresses in my blog. They have now been removed from there as well.

It does indeed sound like we have rocked the boat, hopefully to good effect. We'll see.

Meh.... I looked it over via their website. To me it just looks like fantasy land set in the Steam Punk era.

Give me my *^$#ing Super Heroes!

That means reskins of their characters. No personal characters.
That's up to interpretation. Could mean you can create your own, but only from existing "parts." You know, Wolverine's mask, Captain America's boots, Thor's armor, etc.

We won't really know what they mean until it goes to Beta and people start playing it.
  15. Thanks for posting this. I WAS on the yearly billing schedule... needless to say, I've stopped that now.

But what about things like Super Sidekicking? Inventions? The Store Bought Travel Powers like Ninja Run, the animal transformations, etc? The Incarnate System?

If the Devs behind Paragon managed to reorganize in some shape or form-- or a number of them went to work for another studio-- or a third party studio wanted to use something similar-- how much of that tech could they use in a new game?
Technically, legally, they couldn't use any of it... unless I'm mistaken. (I used to work, very briefly, as a programmer.) All the coding, the costume pieces, the powersets.. all of it is property of NCSoft. The game engine? That coding either belongs to Cryptic, or they out right sold it to NCSoft.

They would have to start from scratch.

One note further: Including static image links to eg Leandro's rally pic or Paragon pic will make the email that much more powerful, but at an even higher risk of getting filtered. So flip a coin and go with it.

While that may be true in theory... it's also true that adding attachments will make it more likely that your email will get labeled as spam by their filters.

    • Customize your character with a library of costumes from Marvel’s rich history.
    • Discover an endless variety of gear to increase your hero's power."

You will be able to design your own characters according to this... but to what extent? We'll see...

I will give this game a try (unless the miracle happens and CoH is saved) but if it ends up being a world full of Wolverine, Captain America, Thor, etc clones I'll be out of there so fast it won't even be funny.
  19. While I did not see this until after work, by which time it was too late, I would have thrown in... well, if I had a paypal account. (Last time I did, I had to deal with fraudulent charges placed on it and so cancelled it... once burned, twice shy as the saying goes.)

That said, I think that this is the kind of positive story that about our community that needs to be brought to the media's attention. So...

If you read this thread and work for a newspaper, TV station, any sort of news outlet, even if you just write a blog from time to time, let's get word of this out there.

Devs... can get a picture or two of this event in progress?

    Thanks in advanced.

    'Sup folks.

From everyone I've heard, they stopped accepting CoH payments. People have said they have been able to get VIP, but only with codes off of bought disk versions of the game, not cards.

I'm on a yearly sub, with doesn't run out until 2013... so they will probably try and pitch me one of their other games. My response? Let me know when CoH 2 comes out...
  21. I've had that happen BEFORE the announcement. Try rebooting the game.
  22. Lovely idea, both for your class, and as a way to maybe turn the heads at NCSoft.

Here's to you being able to use this valuable teaching aid for years to come!
  23. I'll try and remember... and then just have to figure out which toon to bring. (Some of my best are on Justice)
