Forty new citizens of Paragon every semester!
Sir, I applaud you.
Well done.

Lovely idea, both for your class, and as a way to maybe turn the heads at NCSoft.
Here's to you being able to use this valuable teaching aid for years to come!
So there are forty new citizens of Paragon, some of whom will stick around after the exercise is over. And next semester, gods-willing, there will be forty more. And forty more every semester after that. All they need is a game to log into.

That is just too cool. I wish I had gotten to take that class before I graduated!

I am Lord Omi. Now and forever. They can take our City, but they can't take me.
Awesome work Mindscythe. Here is a class I would get an A+ in.

I am currently attending college. I have already taken the course you are teaching and you have inspired me to have a chat with the powers that be at my university. If you have any advice on my best path to achieve this, I am all ears.
This is not only an excellent teaching tool, it is also free publicity for the company.
Not only are you teaching them useful information for web design, you are also assisting them in their beginning as a hero and giving them useful information to play the game.
Thank you so much for posting this and for fighting the good fight.
Okay, I squeed. I admit it.

Very nice.
While I also have a windows PC, I really appreciate that CoH runs on my Macbook as well.
I'm a 7 yr vet and this game still amazes me with its innovative designs and creative mindset. Your students will appreciate what you have taught them. One other thing that you will be teaching them is the empowerment of the freedom to fly above their grounded life and see others beyond borders...many people from all walks of life play this game not just for gaming but for reasons of their own. From socialization, real life friendships, medical problems, emotional upheavals, and must plain fun, the CoH is a community that transcends physical borders and barriers. I applaud your works with our future gamer community and here's hoping CoH will be around for them!

None of my classes were ever that awesome.
Please try MA arc ID 351455, "Shard Stories: Scavenger's Hunt." Originally created for the Dr. Aeon contest, it explores the wild potential of one of the City's most concept-rich but content-poor settings: the Shadow Shard.
When I was in college we were taught to bash two rocks together in order to make sparks. I like this new type of schoolin' you have here.

Whatever they're paying you to teach that class, Mindscythe, it isn't enough!
Hi, I'm Mindscythe, and I'm a CoH Lifer since about three months after launch. Never unsubbed, never stopped playing, never stopped paying, even created a second account (also VIP) a few years back.
When I'm not running around as a crimson-clad magic mind controller, I'm a professor at Central Michigan University, where I teach our introductory web design for electronic media class. Currently, I have two sections, a Monday-Wednesday class and a Tuesday-Thursday class. Although I helped write the course many years back, this is my first time teaching it.
Week 1 is all about Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) theory, talking about virtual identity, community, and culture. This is right up my alley, since that's what my doctoral dissertation was about. In week 3, the students get assigned an exercise that asks them to explore an online community, participate, and write a short (3-5 pages) paper on their experience when the week is over.
Long before the NCsoft announcement, I knew I'd love to send my students into Paragon and let them experience the same virtual community I've come to love and call home. That was an easy decision. Getting the college computer techs to install a "game program" on the computers in the lab I teach in, on the other hand, wasn't, but I convinced them. And this week...
The Monday-Wednesday class.
The Tuesday-Thursday class
I'm not ashamed to say that I teared up just a little taking these pictures. And it was wonderful to see comments in the main Pinnacle channel like "Why are their *20* level 2's running around AP?" yesterday.
And best of all, I've already gotten requests from students for the client so they can install the game at home. Fortunately, I have copies of both that I can give them.
So there are forty new citizens of Paragon, some of whom will stick around after the exercise is over. And next semester, gods-willing, there will be forty more. And forty more every semester after that. All they need is a game to log into.
