refund = doom
Just got my emails from ncsoft.
So rather than letting me play the game they would prefer to give us our money back. |
After that, there is still a glimmer of hope that someone else will make a bid, and NCSoft will sell... or one of the other Save COH plans might pull thru.
All the refund really does is solidify NCSoft no longer publishing the game.
Basically this is something NCSoft would pretty much have to do. Regardless of whether the game was saved or not.
If CoH is licensed off or spun off or whatever, they'd still have to refund us.
Bank the money for now and, if/when it comes time that CoH rises under another banner, give them the money.
Remember, even if CoH was declared "saved" today, we'd probably be looking at some downtime in December anyhow. There's a LOT of systems in CoH that are tied to the NCSoft billing system. It's going to take some time and a bunch of programmers to decouple that.
Don't give up the ship yet. It's not sinking. It's simply releasing ballast.

NCSoft was never, ever, going to say, "Y'know what? Never mind. We'll keep supporting CoX and taking your money." It was not. Going. To. Happen.
So they were always going to have to deal with severing the customer-business ties. This is just part of that.
I will only give up when Brian Clayton comes on these forums and says, "There is no way we will be able to negotiate the release of the 'City of' franchise IP from NCSoft. In the end, no arrangement could be reached that satisfied both sides. I'm very sorry, but we're out of options and November 30 really is the end. Oh, and NCSoft has a team of ninjas that they will send out to assassinate anyone who starts a private server with cribbed-together code after the game is gone. Oh, and the UN has ruled that the only allowable superhero MMOs from now until 2020 are CO and DCUO. Oh, and if you want your dog back, put $300 in a paper bag and leave it behind the third bench in the park a block from your house."
Getting money back for a service I knew NCSoft had no intention of providing, because they had made the business decision not to continue the game?
Not. Doom.
My postings to this forum are not to be used as data in any research study without my express written consent.
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

Dear OP,
NCSoft does NOT want your money anymore. That's why they're shutting down the game. They made that decision clear on Aug 31, 2012.
Please buff Ice Control.
I think you're not being counterproductive enough. Surely there's even more you can do to depress fellow players and alienate NCSoft executives during negotiations! You can by yourself destroy the game, you're already well on your way!

No clue what you mean here. The refunds don't mean doom at all.

I thought it was kinda bad when they closed the studio, fired all the devs, and publically announced that the game had 3 months to live, but now that I'm getting a refund I'm REALLY worried!

Well, I got their spam about Blade & Soul, which I have no interest in (didn't they learn with Aion that Korean grindfests don't do so well over here?) but I haven't gotten anything about City, refunds, or anything like that.

An MMO closure is definitely not a joke, and I have no intention of making light of it. And it can be a tough and emotional thing for players to go through, speaking from personal experience. And I know that it's often much harder on the developers than on the publisher. However, I also know that it doesn't necessarily turn you into a sad, depressed sack of tears for the rest of your life. People can move past it, and heal.

Hello xxxxxx,
I apologize for the delay in our response; we have an unusually high ticket volume which we are working through as quickly as possible.
Your ticket has been escalated to me as a supervisor for NCsoft Account Support. Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding the recent announcement that City of Heroes will soon be discontinued. For fans of the game, including myself, this of course was not news that was well received.
Regarding your request for compensation, what I would like for you to do is keep this reply as a record of our conversation. Typically, when a game has run its full course and the decision has been made to end services and support for the game, a compensation package is rolled out to all those players who qualify or have remaining paid game time, point, or currency balances left on their game account. In the past, these packages have been very generous and have sometimes included complementary copies of other NCsoft games, depending on how much time or currency was left on the account in question.
Since the compensation package for City of Heroes has not yet been finalized, and I do not yet have authorization of offer compensation for the closure of City of Heroes, I would very much like for you to wait to see what the official offer will include. If what is offered is not up to your satisfaction, please reply to this message and we can address your request at that time.
Of course, if you have any questions in the mean time, please let me know and I'll be happy to address your questions to the best of my ability.
Thanks,
