Why we want our own Characters
UPDATE: I got one "like" from my post and it was from...MARVEL HEROES!
"Samual_Tow - Be disappointed all you want, people. You just don't appreciate the miracles that are taking place here."
Agreed. And, this is an aside from the topic of why we want our own heroes, which we're in agreement about, as far as I've heard, they haven't said that you cannot make your own characters in the game, have they?
I've certainly not kept track of it at all, I only remember hearing and reading some of the information regarding playing their trademark characters.
Just curious if it has ever been stated that this is the only way to play the game.
It's funny, I only somewhat recently finally found some understanding of wanting to play the trademarked characters.
Don' get me wrong, I still much prefer to play original creations of my own and I think it'd be a ridiculous mistake to prevent people from creating their own original characters in such a game. I just finally related playing other people's characters to portraying characters, as an actor, that have been written by someone else. I can certainly take them on as my own and portray them as best I can. Of course, within the realm of playing ongoing video games, it still pales in comparison for myself. Especially since it's not like I was solely chosen to represent that recognized/famous character.
As you said, I'd much prefer to see my own creations come to life.

Yes they have said exactly that. Many have gone on to say that this is because people will only make Marvel clone characters if given the opportunity.

Thanks! I hadn't heard that there was official word about that.
Haha, pretty silly. Another Super Hero title that won't come close to the greatness that CoH captures.

They aren't making an RPG. They are making what they always wanted: an on line game for playing as Marvel characters. It was the failure to do this that led to the falling out with Cryptic.
You might as well ask "why can't we play as out own characters in Chess?".
I really should do something about this signature.
They call it a "MMO Action RPG"

"Action RPG" = arcade game
Blame Diablo.

I got an e-mail from the new Marvel MMO (@MMM Society), they posed a question what I would like to see featured in the new MMO. I basically listed off a huge list of CoX related features including changing the name of the game to City of Heroes .
Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.
Slazenger, Area51, Area53, Area54, Erruption, Mind Plague, Thresher, Sheath, Broadside, Debt
On a side note one of my main questions I posed to them was:-
@DefiantSlaz 12 Sep
@MMMSociety Will this MMO keep everything in line with the EU and America with regards to release date, Beta invites etc. Stung in past.
Marvel Heroes
@MMMSociety
@DefiantSlaz We will try our best. We cannot guarantee everything will be simultaneous globally, but we're going to do what we can.

See your from the EU Praf, might be of interest, also they seemed very interested in the EU market which I liked and having taken time out to reply to me was good of them.

"Collect and play as your favorite Marvel Super Heroes including Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Captain America, Wolverine, Hulk, and many others.
- Choose from a list of fan favorites from the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and every corner of the Marvel Universe.
- Build your character using a library of spectacular powers appropriate to your hero.
- Customize your character with a library of costumes from Marvels rich history.
- Discover an endless variety of gear to increase your hero's power."
You will be able to design your own characters according to this... but to what extent? We'll see...
I will give this game a try (unless the miracle happens and CoH is saved) but if it ends up being a world full of Wolverine, Captain America, Thor, etc clones I'll be out of there so fast it won't even be funny.
"Customize your character with a library of costumes from Marvel’s rich history"
That means reskins of their characters. No personal characters.

You know what as much as my initial thought to this game was "Can't make my own characters? Meh" I'm still going to try it. Given the current options we have for scratching that super hero itch, this one may well be the best of a bad bunch.
Additionally, whilst our own imaginations give us the scope to create unique characters, the scope of the existing Marvel Universe is such that there is almost certainly a concept that is covered to some degree by an existing Marvel character. So long as they give us plenty of different ones to choose from, other than what we've come to expect from previous Marvel licensed titles as a mere smattering (think the Ultimate Alliance games), then personally, I can't see a problem.
The problem is just simply that we all have "CoH Lock". We want CoH. We can't have it, therefore any game that isn't it, simply won't do. I'd rather try a game out and judge it on its own merits first.

I didn't care for Ultimate Alliance, so I likely won't be getting what appears to be Ultimate Alliance Online.

Ive read rumours that 8,000 Marvel characters are going to be included as playable. Sounds good to me.

We won't really know what they mean until it goes to Beta and people start playing it.
When they demoed the game, your choice was established marvel hero and which of their alternate costumes you wanted them to wear.

That's up to interpretation. Could mean you can create your own, but only from existing "parts." You know, Wolverine's mask, Captain America's boots, Thor's armor, etc.

But MMOs simply aren't RPGs any more, whatever their publishers might claim. If you want a proper RPG, then it probably means going back to PnP.

I'll probably think of a concept, see if it ties in with an existing Marvel character, and then see if that character is included in the game. Just because it's a Marvel game with Marvel characters doesn't automatically mean I'm going to play one of the popular or obvious ones. Additionally if I have a character concept in mind that's a nod to an established character, I have the opportunity to play that character instead of having to think of ways to make that character sufficiently different to the official one so as to avoid it being generic-ed or reported.

That really bugs them doesn't it? Despite evidence to the contrary (sure there are clones running around the existing games, but I'd bet they're vastly outnumbered by original characters). They sued Cryptic because players could do that in CoH, now this. Meanwhile, in DCUO, they GIVE YOU armor that'll make your character look like several of their established heroes. It's just funny to me.

Since DCUO is given use of the DC License, you can make your character exactly like Batman and no one cares... the game encourages you to in some ways. If a person in game sees that "Batman" he's like cool, Batman!
Same goes for Marvel and their property.
In CoH... if someone makes Batman or Cyclops the person is doing so without Marvel/DC's permission and as such they aren't happy. *shrugs* That's just how it is. The long and short of it is that a company doesn't want you to conflate their characters and iconography with someone else's property. Like thinking Batman is owned by NCSoft or something ludicrous like that (and considering some of the wording in the EULA, technically, if you create a Batman character in CoH NCSoft would own it... sorta).
Gamers being what they are, if the Kangaroo happens to be a great farming build I'm sure the game will be hopping.

I posted this in response...
"By being able to create you own characters, you create your own stories with in the Marvel Universe, with you as the lead character. This is YOUR marvel Universe where you can be more heroic as Captain America or more sinister than Doom. Imagine them look at you with respect or fear as their equal or even their superior. Haven't you had an idea for a superhero, but you couldn't draw? Imagined what powers he would have? Imagine that character come to life and a part of the Marvel adventure!"
I wanted to be clear why Marvel made a mistake with going with a Diablo 3 clone in their new "MMO".
