Why we want our own Characters
*shrugs* i wanna play an established heroes
I've always found it interesting, if puzzling, that if you give players a nigh unlimited amount of customization options, there will inevitably be a sizable chunk of people who just try to copy an existing character. You give them the ability to make anything they want, with any name they want, and tell a story where they're the star of the action, and they just go with Ir0n M4n or Wolferine.
I mean, what is that? Is it laziness? Apathy? Is it just too hard for them to put any thought into creating a unique costume? |
Or, alternately, "I want to see how Character X would fare in this world!" - fanfiction of sorts.
As for the Marvel game, I'm hoping that the inclusion of Squirrel Girl means it'll have a healthy dose of C-list and D-list characters. I'll try it if Razorback or Captain Ultra are playable.
To be fair from what I understand most terms of service include us actually surrendering any personal rights to our creations on the slim chance we become so famous in game they can steal our character to turn into an NPC. Or adopt it as a more noble case in reguards to our fallen forum poster from years back who was the source for our in game NPC Coyote.
This has actually been something of a boon for me in how it made many bits of CoH lore open to me to draw upon for characters to adopt and develop into my own rather then let them be forgotten names in old arcs.
Since all content in CoH is their creation I never had to fear the infringement issues that would plague you in a game theoretically like one based on marvel, if I wanted to say make a relative to a known and TMd character id be violating the law.
CoH has let me use names like Bentley Berkeley, Demetrios Vasilikos, and Count Alphonse Crey along with many others all because they where part of the game world and not connected with any DEV characters.
So although I didnt create the first page of Bentley's story I did add many to it, and developed him for the RPers of virtue from a name barely recalled from some old arcs or listed on the Midnighters Charter, to an active mystical mentor to the magically gifted of Paragon. From the mythical immortal man to the blaster who had tanks asking him how he could out tank them. Such moments of my time in the game will always shine brightly.
Something I could never do in CO, because cryptic doesnt own Champions, is just leasing the digital rights to it. Something I couldnt do in DCUO, and something I doubt marvel will let happen either.
CoH let me become part of its lore and its just another reason it is the best at what it does!
Ive read rumours that 8,000 Marvel characters are going to be included as playable. Sounds good to me.

Cypher?
Can anybody think of a more useless Marvel hero?
On second thought forget useless. I want to be Uatu. My only power being the ability to show up in other players missions and watch them play.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Actually, it would be cool if all the GMs appeared as Watchers.
Always remember, we were Heroes.

I mean, that doesn't fit well into most games with such wide-open character creation, but it's an understandable desire.
There is a certain appeal to playing the actual Iron Man, or Hulk, or Punisher, or etc, each with their own considerable character development and history, and a pre-existing emotional attachment from comics and movies. It definitely doesn't look like it will fill the same niche as CoH, but I tremendously enjoyed Ultimate Alliance, and "Ultimate Alliance Online" sounds pretty appealing now that the group I used to play with has scattered to different cities.
I'll be checking this game out, the idea of playing only as Marvel characters is both appealing and unappealing at the same time. I like making my own characters, however the chance to be characters like the HULK, IRON MAN, GHOST RIDER have a nice appeal too.
Here's hoping they include the John Blaze and Dan Ketch Ghost Riders, also the 60's GR now known as the Phantom Rider, Adam Warlock and Captain Mar-Vell as playable characters.
I wonder how they intend to handle people playing the same character teaming?
I wouldn't mind playing as Nick Fury, or even Coulson.
I really should do something about this signature.

HULK SMASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
"Samual_Tow - Be disappointed all you want, people. You just don't appreciate the miracles that are taking place here."
I remember reading somewhere that multiple people could play the same character on a single team with no issues. (Other than maybe the players getting confused who is who if neither one is using an alternate costume)
Edited to add:
Ah, there's the article: http://www.gamezone.com/products/mar...nds-on-preview
I also asked whether it's possible to team up with five other friends and all play as the same character. The answer was a resounding yes, which means if you want to make an army of Iron Men, you have that option. To keep things not only interesting, but also to easily distinguish yourself from another player with the same hero, there will be a myriad of costumes that will all completely alter the look of your hero, and many will be pulled directly from the Marvel lore. |
That is LAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.
...so I should should just pick a random obscure character, then delete him the moment I see a clone?
...I wonder how long before I see another Blob?

And Marvel actually thinks this is going to be a success! This is their superhero version of a WoW killer? ...seriously!

And, no, this isn't their idea of a WoW-killer. I don't think anyone seriously thinks any MMO is going to be a WoW-killer anymore. Instead, MH development is being headed by the same guy who created Diablo 1 and 2 (which is why the playstyle is similar), and is trying to move into that territory rather than competing with WoW.
The point is this is the game that Marvel dropped Cryptic for and I ask myself why?

Because this is the game that they wanted? Because it's an upscaled version of Ultimate Alliance, the game they already made? Twice?
It's not at all a substitute for CoH. It's not trying to be. That would be like complaining that comic books don't come with enough blank pages so we can write in our own characters. Writing your own characters is awesome and wonderful, but it's not what they're going for.
I have no idea if it will be any good. Maybe it'll crash or flop, but there's little evidence that an MMO where you create your own superheroes rather than using well-known and popular ones is more likely to avoid that.
Perhaps I am just venting. I simply thing A CoH-esque Marvel game would have been great.

"i still dont understand why people think playing as existing Marvel Heroes is such a bad thing"
I posted this in response...
"By being able to create you own characters, you create your own stories with in the Marvel Universe, with you as the lead character. This is YOUR marvel Universe where you can be more heroic as Captain America or more sinister than Doom. Imagine them look at you with respect or fear as their equal or even their superior. Haven't you had an idea for a superhero, but you couldn't draw? Imagined what powers he would have? Imagine that character come to life and a part of the Marvel adventure!"
I wanted to be clear why Marvel made a mistake with going with a Diablo 3 clone in their new "MMO".
I mean, what is that? Is it laziness? Apathy? Is it just too hard for them to put any thought into creating a unique costume?
Goodbye, I guess.
