Why we want our own Characters
Some men were born to greatness, others have it thrust upon them. Me? I punted.

Always remember, you can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your firend's nose.
Oh, wanted to note this too - they never said 8,000 Marvel characters would be playable, they said that they have Marvel's stable of approximately 8,000 characters to draw from. I'd be shocked if there's even 100 characters to choose from when all is said and done. (I'd be even more shocked if the two characters I mentioned earlier were among them)
And, no, this isn't their idea of a WoW-killer. I don't think anyone seriously thinks any MMO is going to be a WoW-killer anymore. Instead, MH development is being headed by the same guy who created Diablo 1 and 2 (which is why the playstyle is similar), and is trying to move into that territory rather than competing with WoW. |

Here's an interesting thought: would we CoH players still want Marvel to include the "create your own character" option if CoH did not have an expiration date? But that's for another topic.
Personally, I think playing as Marvel characters is very fun. I thoroughly enjoyed both Ultimate Alliance games, as well as both X-Men Legends games. That said, I enjoyed them so much because I was Silver Surfer. (Or Cap, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, etc.) Nobody else. Maybe I am just a slave to the "unique snowflake mentality," but even in co-op play on those games, no one was doing what my specific character was doing.
I can only speak for myself, but playing as Captain America on a team with 1 or more other Captain Americas (regardless of what "era" costume they are wearing) is less fun because they are the same character in essence.
Even if CoX players were to do a "Shield/SS super team" or something close to Captain America's abilities, there was likely still going to be a great variation in gender, physical appearance, origin/story, and power customization (let alone power pool choices, etc.). None of that appears to exist in MH. If two players play as Captain America, you are both "Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America," with likely only slightly varied costumes and power choices to tell you apart. Who wants to play make-believe in a world where other people make-believe they are the same person you are?
As usual, I will reserve final judgement until the game is released, but I feel pretty confident in saying that most players are going to want to play the "A-List" characters that they have heard of, and most people will probably get a little miffed when they log in to find that they are 1 of 300 other people that wanted to play as Iron Man.
@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.

Yup, from the Wikipedia article
They're using the same model of play from their MARVEL Super Hero Squad game, in which you play from a stable of established characters. The real kicker is you're limited to only a handful at start, and not nescesarily the ones you want. You then can 'purchase' characters to play in their in-game store. This is, of course, expedited by real money microtransactions to buy in-game coin in which to purchase the heroes you want to play. The more popular are obviously the more expensive ones in most cases. I doubt it'll be different (and maybe even more aggressively so) in the more mature player oriented version.
Frankly, I don't mind that you can play established characters, it's a neat idea and an option I would probably take advantage of as an OPTION. However, I also want to build my own from scratch as well.
Why can't we have both? (don't know where a link to that picture of the little kid from the El Paso taco commercial would be found, and too lazy to make my own )
In any event, I'm a MARVEL fan so I'll probably at least try it. We'll see though...
"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.
