  1. Eh, I suppose I can spare the time to whip up a couple letters, but I think even calling it a "Hail Mary" still grossly overestimates the odds of success.
  2. Only getting half of the ATs to 50... Still need a Defender, Warshade, Peacebringer, Stalker, Brute, Mastermind (OK, I did a petless MM to 50, but that doesn't really count :P), and Soldier. . I also would've liked to unlock all Incarnate slots on one of each AT and get at least 1 T4 Power for each slot. Right now I have four Incarnates, three of which are 6/6 Tier 4, and one which is a single Very Rare and a handful of Common components away from 6/6 T4.
  3. Just logged in to my 50. First impression: I have two quickbars. Two. Makes the game borderline unplayable if I want to do anything but solo PvE, and even then I am not amused. I smell an uninstall in the near future. This isn't even QOL, this is a basic functionality thing.

Hrm, I may have to change my favorite to my new 50, an Elec/Elec/Mu Dom. Dominators are still definitely my favorite AT. If only I had more time to level more of them...
  5. Sadly, yes, I have given up. The game will not be saved. Sure, I still hope it will be, and that at least Positron and War Witch will continue to work on it (since a significant portion of the rest of Paragon Studios is already employed elsewhere), but that's the same kind of hope I have when I play the lottery. Main difference is I imagine my odds of winning the lottery are slightly better.

Even if the game was sold off at some point (and I am quite certain that it will not be), it wouldn't have the same dev team, and I don't know if we'd get the same quality of game we've been getting. Sure, it could actually be better, but I doubt it.

So, as much as I wish it wasn't, CoH is done. I still dislike NCSoft for it. I'd say I won't be buying any of their other games as a result, but I hadn't planned on buying any of their other games anyway, so it's rather meaningless. I do know I'll be keeping my eyes open to see where the rest of the devs end up and watching those projects carefully. Most of the creative folks at PS who have found new jobs have, unfortunately, found jobs with companies I am not terribly interested in (Dr. Aeon working on STO, for example), but I still wish them the best.

As for Plan Z... it's a nice thought, and I won't say it's impossible for it to work out well, but it's pretty close to it, I'd think.

    1. Dominator. Friggin' love Dominators. I don't know why. Something about massive crowd control and being able to do decent ranged and melee damage. I just love the way they play.

    2. My Fire/Fire/Leviathan Dom.

    3. Ironically, Controllers. Way back in Issue 0, I wasn't terribly fond of the fact that you couldn't target yourself for buffs (my understanding of the mechanics of the game was very poor :\ ). Couple that with the low damage output of control abilities, and the fact that for whatever reason I hated grouping, I was not terribly fond of Controllers (or Defenders). I rather like both ATs now.

On a side note, I kind of regret my glacial leveling pace.... There's 7 ATs I never got to 50. Maybe I can finish one more before the end....
  7. Eh. I might log into GW2 to check out the Halloween event, but I kinda regret buying it. Not necessarily because I hate NCSoft (I do hate NCSoft, but it's a minor factor in this case), but because it's not a very good game. Can't get a refund, though, because I'm a dinosaur and bought a boxed copy from Best Buy.

If you like the game, or think you'll really like the game and don't mind giving money to NCSoft. Buy it. If you don't like the game, or don't think you'd like the game, or don't want to give NCSoft money, then don't. I, personally, am extremely disinclined to give NCSoft money in the future, but it's kind of a moot point because none of their other products, extant or nascent (or extinct, for that matter) interest me.
  8. Eh, I generally offer to form a team a few times every time I play, usually as soon as a log on and then once when I'm debating logging off, and often at least once in between if I'm playing for a particularly long time with very mixed results. So often the order is mixed (IE, I offer to form team, no takers, then people complain no one teams. Or, often, people complain no one teams but I never seen anyone take the initiative).

I don't sweat it too much, though since there's loads of solo content so it's not like I have nothing else to do.
  9. I meant "On Sale" for less than $300. :P Though if I ever have $300 and nothing else I'd prefer to buy, I'd consider it.

Also, my face when the following happens:
    1. People in the CoX channel complain that it's hard to find teams
    2. I offer to form a team
    3. No takers.

  10. All right. So I've put in over 4 days /played into CO. I'm willing to eat crow (just a tad) and say it's not a bad game. I still don't like most of the character models. I still think City of Heroes is, in almost all respects, a superior game. But Champions is not bad. I do have fun playing it. I've managed to run all the lairs up until VIPER Nest (level 38) and have yet to run any of the 40 lairs. The missions, in general, do seem to get more interesting and a lot less... stupid later on.

Really, I guess it's not a bad game. Right now my only real complaint is that there isn't a whole lot of group specific content (Alerts, which are really generic and uninteresting, and Lairs, which few people seem to run). The issue seems to be, from talking to CO Vets, is that the player base of CO doesn't seem to want group content. The argument seems to be circular and self-defeating; they don't run group content because the rewards are abysmal but they don't want group content to provide decent rewards because it's somehow "unfair". So lairs provide crap loot and it's rather difficult to scrape together a team to do them.

Now, don't get me wrong here, I'm all for alternative methods to get good stuff, which is why even though I love Incarnate Trials, I was (am) a big fan of the Dark Astoria revamp (heck, my only complaint is I think it should've been released sooner). But the way they do it, Champions seems to make soloing more efficient than grouping.

Maybe I'm missing something somewhere? Honestly, I just want to do the lairs because I like to see as much content/mess around with as many systems in an MMO as I possibly can. I should just look for an SG that has a similar completionist (I think that's the best term for it) attitude.

But with that said, I like the game enough that if the lifetime sub ever goes on sale and I have the cash to spare, I'd buy it. Not nearly as good as City of Heroes, but a good game nonetheless. Of course, that doesn't make me any less sad to see CoH go, especially because Cryptic recycled several sound effects from CoH in CO, so every time I hear them, it reminds me of CoH and how much more I like CoH than CO. The character models, writing, and content aren't as good as CoH. Especially the writing. The only thing that comes close is the 37-40 zone, Vibora Bay, and even that is severely lacking compared to what has happened, was currently happening, and what was on the horizon for CoH.

EDIT: As Kurt Cobain once said, "Hey, wait, I've got a new complaint". Well, not new, but one I just remembered. My only other one, is that they also seem to be glacially slow with update patches. Looking at their website, they seem to count two of their seasonal events and their F2P transition as "content updates", and other than that, there have been, it looks like, six real additions to the game in the three years its been in existence. IMO that's nothing to be terribly proud of in the MMO space. I've played quite a few MMOs, and it's been my experience that most put out content and system updates far more frequently than that. I have to wonder how much Champions is suffering from Cryptic's apparent "churn-and-burn" approach to game development.

  11. ....Oh. I evidently forgot about that part. I guess that's what I get for playing so sporadically. I think I did that mission last December. So I retract that statement, that part does make sense. I still think most of the rest of the missions I've seen are less-than-stellar.

I frigging love Whiteout, though. And Serpent Lantern... and all of the APs/Comic Series. IMO Cryptic should do more of those, though I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse of the CO playerbase, so I don't know if that's what they would want, which is, obviously, more important than the opinions of someone who's just flat out stated that he doesn't intend to play the game after hitting level 40.

That doesn't "prove" anything, IMO. Just because the second effort of a bunch of professionals was mediocre doesn't guarantee that an effort by amateur freelancers would be worse. There are many professionals out there who aren't very good at their chosen craft, and many amateurs who are brilliant at it. Really, though, I'm frankly expecting to be extremely unimpressed with the Titan Network's efforts. I do agree that the odds of the Titan Network's proposed game being any good are pretty damn slim.

Furthermore, IIRC, while CO and CoH were both developed by Cryptic, the actual members of the teams were different. Unless I'm mistaken, most of the original CoH team stuck with Paragon Studios, and most of the team working on MUO-turned-CO was relatively new. And let's say, hypothetically, they were the same team; all that would prove would be that they collectively only had one good idea and they didn't know how to evolve it, and/or their other ideas are bad. Seems to happen all the time in music where an artist will have one really great album or even just one really great song, and the rest of their stuff winds up being mediocre at best.

I assume you were quoting me as a jumping off point to make a general point, not a point directed at me, as I didn't really mention the Titan Project in my post.

As for the graphics, this is all really a matter of opinion. I don't think Champions looks good. I can't put into technical terms what I think is wrong with it, I just don't like it. It's got nothing to do with cel-shading; I loved Borderlands and I think it's a great looking game. I do not think Champions is a good looking game. Some of the indoor environments are actually quite cool, but most of the outdoor environments and the character models, IMO, are awful. People say it looks like a comic book; I have to disagree. Borderlands certainly looked like a graphic novel; Champions, IMO, looks more like a low budget Saturday morning cartoon drawn by particularly untalented artists and animators.

And I like to think I've given CO a fair shake; heck, I was playing it last night (in a group, no less, probably the first time since I rolled the character that I actually grouped! With some names I recognize from this very forum). I've got a level 24 ice character. And I still maintain that it is an ugly and uninteresting, poorly written game. Other than the adventure packs and comic series, the only missions that are memorable to me are memorable because they're so bad: the ham-fisted "Anchorman" reference, the unbelievably insipid and inane Snake Gulch Robot Cowboy nonsense, and the vaguely racist Hi-Pan ("Mirrenny... Milrenny... The City!"). None of these are good impressions. The only other mission I remember is only memorable because it made little sense. This would be the mission against the Purple Gang in Milennium City, which would be completely forgettable, except for the last bit where the leader of the Purple Gang, which appears to be a street-thug/Mafia-esque gang, inexplicably has come into possession of a mind control device. It is never explained how such an exotic piece of hardware has fallen into such mundane hands. If the gang leader is some kind of tech genius, or has connections to a tech genius, it is never evident before, during, or after the mission, not that I can remember. Maybe he got it from Doctor Destroyer.

Every other mission in the game has gotten a resounding "meh" from me.

Despite my misgivings about the game, I'm probably going to continue to level my character to 40 simply out of mild curiosity to see if the game gets more interesting later. Unless I'm blown away by the endgame, though (and from what I'm reading, I won't be), that'll probably be the end of my time in CO. I will certainly say there are many very cool ideas in CO, but their execution is generally quite poor. I see they're adding vehicles and vehicular combat soon. That sounds really cool! And, if it's anything like the rest of the content and systems I've encountered in CO, it will be.... quite "meh".

With all that said, none of this should stop anyone who enjoys the game from continuing to enjoy it, and I encourage people who haven't played it but are curious about it to try it for themselves and forge their own opinions.
  13. I agree. I've tried to play Champions several times; during its beta, a free trial or two, and a couple of times after it went F2P. It's just... not a very good game. The art style is ugly, the missions are boring, and the writing... so much of the time it seems like it's more of a tongue-in-cheek parody of the superhero genre than a game that embraces it.

Some of the adventure packs/comic series/whatever they're called are relatively well written, and you theoretically can do those form level 11 to the level cap, but.... that's awfully boring.

I also don't like how it seems to be lacking in group content; content meant for groups, other than the zergy and uninteresting Alerts, doesn't seem to even exist until level 30ish, and even then, it's my understanding that almost no one does it, though I suppose that's what a supergroup is for.

Really, ultimately Champions feels like a game that was trying to be the spiritual successor of sorts to City of Heroes, but as it takes that first step it trips over its own shoelaces and falls flat on its face.
  14. While this is (sort of) good news, in that NCSoft is going to refund people who have essentially paid for a service they will no longer receive, it still does not, in my mind, make up for the abrupt way in which they closed down the game or the immediate and sudden dissolution of the development studio. It also does not really seem to even come close to what they offered at TR and AA's shutdown (even though such an offer is not one I would take them up on).

I, for one, will still fight for this game however I can until the first of December.
  15. I'd miss the MMO aspects, but I'd buy it without hesitation.
  16. I currently only have four questions, two of which were already asked (That I saw, I kinda got excited and didn't read past the first page, so sorry if all of them were already asked!)
    1. What is the Battalion, what do they look like, what do they do, what was gonna happen with them?
    2. What would the remaining Incarnate slots have done and when would they be unlocked?
    3. I had a hunch (and I can't be the only one!) that Scirocco would've become a good guy and Mu'Drakhan would've taken his place in Arachnos. Am I anywhere close to correct?
    4. What, if anything, did you have planned after the Omega slot was unlocked?

Thank you so much for doing this, and thank you so much for everything you have done.
  17. I've always juggled two (sometimes three!) MMOs at a time, but it's always been that case that one of those was City of Heroes.

My current secondary MMO is The Secret World, though I suppose it's about to become my primary. I like it quite a lot, but it's certainly no City of Heroes. :\ There's very few other games out there right now and very few games on the horizon that interest me.

If I were to hypothetically play one of those other Superhero MMOs, it'd be DCUO. I've played it before, and it's.... fun, but very shallow and pales in comparison to City of Heroes.

I did not like Champions Online at all.
  18. Honestly? Otherland and Planteside 2, and possibly , maybe EQNext are the only ones left. I'm a big MMO player. I've played most of the major ones, and several of the minor ones, since EverQuest. None of them could really hold my attention for long, except for SWG (from launch until the wretched NGE) and World of Warcraft (from launch until first Expansion, and then on and off for a couple months afterward), and City of Heroes(May 2004-whenever they pull the plug). I've been chasing the dragon, so to speak, for years, but no game has come close to CoH for me. This time last year, or two years ago? There'd be a list of MMOs I was anticipating a mile long.

Now it's down to three, and one of those (EQNext), I'm not so sure about.

Right now I'm playing The Secret World. It's not CoH by any stretch, but I am enjoying it.

Other than that, there's very little on the horizon that interests me. The only other games currently running that I would play would be The Old Republic, or DC Universe Online (and DCUO doesn't hold a candle to CoH, IMO).

It pains me to say it because I know BABs works for Cryptic and plays CoH (and posts on these very forums!), and I still have much respect for the guy, but Champions is just... I'm going to be diplomatic and say that I do not like it at all. Not a bit. It's a shame.

Basically I'm going to be playing the Secret World and dabbling a bit in Otherland and PS2, while wailing and gnashing my teeth at the loss of City of Heroes and wishing I was playing it still.
  19. I said it on Twitter but I should say it here, too.

Thank you. That goes to all the devs, writers, programmers, Community Managers, and everyone at Paragon Studios. I'm not very active in the CoH forums (300 posts in eight years? Heh. I didn't even join the forums until almost a year after I started playing), and I'm not terribly active in the community outside my SG and a handful of global channels. But I love this game with a pretty strong passion. I've played MMOs since 2000. For a long time I'd just play one for a couple of months and get bored, until I played Star Wars Galaxies, which kept me occupied for quite a long time. Some time after SWG came out, I read about some new MMORPG, soon to be released, called City of Heroes. I was never really into comic books, and I read about the game, and thought "An MMORPG about superheroes? How on earth would that work? Can it even be any good?"

The answer to that last question. Yes. It can be. It can be good enough to keep me playing for 8 years. I'd pick up other games to play on the side, but no game, ever, has captured me the way City of Heroes has. It's the only MMO where I can say that I have loved every single update it's received. It was the first MMO that really made me care about the world and the story and the characters, and is, in fact, one of the only ones to do that til this day. To this day, it is my favorite MMO. In fact, it may very well be my favorite game of all time.

What is happening is appalling. I keep hoping that somehow, Paragon City and the Rogue Isles will be saved. I'm not holding my breath, though. So thank you, Paragon Studios. I wish nothing but the best for all of you. I know you guys still have a lot to offer and we haven't heard the last of you as members of the gaming industry.

I'm not much of a photographer, but I snapped this photo yesterday afternoon:

EDITED: "A comic book about superheroes"... durrrr. Mean to write "An MMO about superheroes". Well, that kind of spoils the poignancy, doesn't it?
  20. I got 93% and "413 other people got this result! That's 106% ".

    106%? Wut

Incidentally, in my result it said something about Zunkuft or something like that, which is the German server, so I assume the typos and grammar are simply because the quiz author is German.
  21. I, too, am Spartacus!

I mean, I, too would like to express my appreciation for the devs of this game. I've played nearly every big name MMO under the sun. Most didn't last more than the free month. Three of those lasted more than one year. City of Heroes... Well, I'd have my Five year anniversary badge by now if circumstances beyond my control had not dictated that I'd be unable to play for three months.

So I, too, would like to thank our developers for one of the best gaming experiences ever, and certainly the most entertaining MMO I've ever played. May this game continue for many years to come.
  22. Whoops. It appears that, by looking at the OP's individual posts, I have been trolled. Good show, sir, though I still stand by my "You write like a ninth grader" statement.
  23. I read up to page 9 before I had to stop. I was getting a headache from all the stupid.

The fact that the OP is an adult with a teenage child but has this viewpoint (and writes like a ninth grader) is really depressing. Looking at the posts on the last page, it looks like this is STILL going on.

    1.)IT'S NOT CROSSDRESSING.

2.) If this booster-pack "turns your kids into gender-bending freaks", you are a miserable failure as a parent to allow a video game to have so much influence on them.
  24. The Fifth, eh?

    *Sharpens his Nazi Stabbin' Knife*

    Excellent.
  25. Cheers, Lighthouse! Thanks for all you've done for us, and best of luck.
