Where are you going?
CoH was it for me so honestly i'm not sure. It's the first MMO i started playing and I just plain never went anywhere else. I played years ago and stopped then came back and this is what i get. i likely will stop playing MMO's all together i don't want to ever feel this way again. After awhile i may venture out when the numbness is gone and i'm not so upset but damn. i'm honestly not sure. if the lights go out i'm avoiding Ncsoft like a plague that's for sure...don't care how good their games are
Man, I'm definitely not going to Champions Online after this. I've spent the last hour or two playing it, and ...
Well, the costume creator is not only sparse (with I'd say at least 60-70% of the pieces locked in some way, either behind quests, in-game currency, or real cash moneys), but the options utterly baffling. I couldn't recreate even the most basic of my characters' appearances from CoH. My character has one robot arm because I got fed up and hit "Random", and there is now no way to NOT have a robot arm except to hit Random again (which I didn't want to do, since I like most of the costume). There's no categories for that. (Or, there's a category, but "Robot arm" is the only option). |
See this picture, you need to click up at the category at the top.
With CO, no, you will not be able to exactly replicate the looks of a CoH character. That's just the way it is, it isn't the same game. In general, I find that CO has the ability to more intricately detail a costume (toggles for symmetry/asymmetry, 4 colors per piece, pieces attached to parts of the body CoH isn't set up for), but generally has less overall options in comparison to CoH. That makes sense, considering CoH is years older.
EDIT: Also, in their infinite wisdom, Perfect World restricted the costume editor to an extent until you reach level 10 on any character (which takes under an hour). Why? I have no idea. To what extent? I don't know, my account is a lot older than that change, though I was told that body scaling is definitely heavily restricted until then.
If you want some help, just PM me and I can give you my global name over there. If not, then I hope you have fun in whatever you decide to do.
I enjoy the game for what it is and nothing more. It's fun, especially in a duo or a group, and it's a decent game, but it isn't a replacement for CoH. Nothing is, and nothing ever will be.
Edit: I played for a little while longer. Once I got out of the tutorial (which it seems there is no way to skip), I kept dying repeatedly to small groups of ordinary gun-toting thugs (with a character who would be approximately a Dual Blades/Super Reflexes scrapper in CoH). So it even fails in the "makes you feel like a superhero" part. I don't recall the last time Superman got his *** repeatedly handed to him by a bunch of muggers.
So it's not only making me sadder than ever, it's going out of its way to downright piss me off by making me feel like a paper-mache punching bag instead of a superhero. |
Also, that is not normal.. maybe try switching your role. You may also, no offense, simply not know how to play yet, being a complete noob. It happens to most of us in ANY new game.
I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
I downloaded and tried CO yesterday and kinda agree with the costume thing. had to keep hitting random to change my gloves, the options for the gloves never give an option. Eventually I was able to make as close to a copy of Heat Guard as I could (luckily one of the free AT's is fire based & obviously his name IS Heat Guard) and got into the tutorial. Logged off after 2 min. It does have 'just' enough to remind me of CoX, and I think it may just be too soon. I WILL be staying here til the lights go out and will pray to the Well that something happens to keep our universe from shutting down, so I think trying ANY other game right now will probably make it seem worse than it actually is.
Edit: I'm not saying the game is bad, I don't think 2 min is anywhere enough time to determine that, I just couldn't get myself to play longer without feeling like i was going to breakdown over what we're losing.
Thanks to everyone that helped make me a welcomed part of the community, and for giving me over 3 years of some of the best gaming I've been able to take part in. May the next game bring many friendships and maybe reconnect to some old CoH friends.

IMO, CoH is simply the best MMO that has ever been made.. by a wide margin.
I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
Yeah.. CO is for my hero fix.. but there is and never will be a replacement for CoH in any game.

Especially the second. Like so many others no matter where I'd wander I'd eventually wander back here.

I'll be playing GW2 bearing in mind I bought it before I found out about what they've done. RL friends play it too.
CoH always called me back. Even from WoW.

When it first started, a few CoH players (including myself) started a fleet on Star Trek Online. Mind you, it's not a huge fleet, but there will by sympathetic souls there, along with a functioning starbase and bank slots. You can find us by following this link. We'd be happy to have more current/former/soon-to-be-former CoH player among our ranks.
Word on the street doesn't mean anything. There's numerous rumours floating around. CoH wasn't making money, GW2 is opening up and they wanted to get rid of CoH to make players join GW2 and make it successful, licensing issues with other companies (this one I hadn't read until you mentioned it)... Nobody knows the truth apart from NCsoft, and I doubt they're going to tell us the truth any time soon.

At this point I choose to believe, until something definite develops, that CO found a way to kill the superhero gorilla competition.
For the record, I rather liked The Secret World trial. Definitely a super hero feel to some of the abilities, just a heavy dark 'goes bump in the night' feel. I would be subscribed to it, but I also tried SW:ToR and found it had a lot of what I liked from the old single player Bioware KotOR. I'll be hanging there for a least a little while.
Looks like my MMO rotation will now be Rift/DDO/TSW.
Gonna miss you guys, except for the ones who show up in one or another of those.
If you want suggestions as to which:
- If you liked EQ or WoW, but felt they were a bit lacking, Rift may be your thing. It is by far the best game in that basic genre I have seen, and the development team is really good. Also, most noticably, they are run basically in a way completely opposite to ncsoft; they are aggressively customer-friendly, very open about things, willing to admit to and apologize for mistakes, and basically well-run. Think of it as "an MMO run by people like Paragon, not by people like ncsoft".
- DDO apparently has a fair share of "you are playing incorrectly go away" elitists and zergs, but it also has RPers and friendly people who want to play. It plays more like D&D than anything else I've seen -- not in the mechanics, but in things like "there is some narration in the dungeons". Complete with the DMs pronouncing game terms differently from each other, doing the voices for monsters, and so on. Also similar in that the primary gameplay is re-levelling, although they have a mechanic where you reroll a character from level cap and get bonuses on your next run through (and need more XP...)
- TSW is the most modern-setting of them, but note that there's no character build specialization at all; everyone can, and probably should, learn all the powers. Specialization is what gear you equip and what powers you have on your (space-limited) bar.
Of them, I think Rift is the one I like the best overall, but that's a personal preference matter.
None of them let you fly. And yes, that bugs me.
The past year and a half or so I have been heavily playing Age of Conan, now on the Set server.
I am Heraclea there, but there are no globals; other characters I am often on are Hippolyte, Nhutruong, and Turandot. Feel free to look me up. The guild I belong to is:

This is the game I thought I would always have to come back to, though.

I'll try Marvel Heroes when it hits, but until then I have no clue.
SWTOR, wow, and maybe champions
I'm not playing any other MMOs. I didn't enjoy WoW, Aion, GW, RO, GE, or CO. I have no idea where I'm going to go now.
Mostly I don't know what to do with my modern-day themed characters, or Arachnos-inspired characters. I just can't take characters like these to some medieval fantasy setting game. Where is everyone going? I'd like some ideas and some discussions on what games offer what. |
(later) Well, Secret World looks interesting. Downloading it now but will probably not play till tomorrow as it has a few hours to go (and SuddenLink is notoriously drop-happy) but we shall see. If it's a keeper I'll let you know.
========
No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously.
I tried Champions Online this morning and I just can't deal with the graphics. Not to mention the relative lack of powersets and the ugly combat animations. So, no.
I'm going to try Rift later, maybe. I liked The Secret World but it's so dark that I can only take it in small doses. So DDO is probably going to be my main game for now.
I really do not know. I have considered not going to another MMO. However thats probably the hurt speaking. I have always had 1 or 2 MMO's that I use for burnout prevention. I have a STO account, I have a TOR account I have a DCUO account and I even have my Istaria (Horizons) account. Granted the STO account is the only active one currently. To be honest those games were not intended to be main games for me. TOR could be but I do not know. I will have to look it over again. I may just wait for the next big thing or see were the Paragon dev's go. I guess its more a wait and see approach.
I hung my tights for a Templar uniform in The Secret World. Looks like I have a keeper with this game. Im gonna really miss my Master Mind!
Prometheus: ... so what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
Me: From a certain point of view?
Prometheus: You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on your point of view.
Me: You're right about that. Power Blast is very pretty from a certain point of view. But that point of view is not head-on. <Kaboom> - Arcanaville.
I'm riding off into the sunset.
As I said, baffling.
Maybe the screen is different for subscribers?
(My wife is loading it up again as I type this to check it out. Loading... loading... Ah, I see. Yeah, I did completely miss that dropdown. Welp, my bad, then. Now that she found the Power Armor, it's looking better. Still does that weird thing where you can bring up pieces with Random but not in the actual editor. Like, right now, the Costume Piece says "Wings Insect Beetle 02" but the dropdown doesn't have that option)
You can skip the tutorial after doing it once. |

Well, I have two games that will help 'wean' me from my CoH addiction.
I am quite fond of LoTRO (Lord of the rings Online) since I'm an old, old fantasy fan. It's not my beloved City but if I have to settle for second best, I can do worse than Middle Earth.
On the other side of the scale, I have 'The final Frontier' of Star Trek online. Suitably epic and BFGs galore.
I might even (if I must) try, once again, to play Champions Online.
Hopefully, I'll never need to go that far.
Writer of In-Game fiction: Just Completed: My Summer Vacation. My older things are now being archived at Fanfiction.net http://www.fanfiction.net/~jwbullfrog until I come up with a better solution.
That's not the same screen as the one I got. Mine was split into two panes, with the left pane being the individual list of body parts (chest, emblem, etc) and the right pane being the actual ist of choices.

From what I've read online, the fixed Archetypes can't change Roles, only the Freeform Archetype, so that wouldn't help. You're making me want to play! Stop it! > |
I say hit level 10 and then go to a tailor. If you need a bit of money, look me up. Send me a PM here if you want my global.
And yeah, power armor is badass.
Still no replacement for CoH though. Dammit, the world stopped making sense Aug 31.

I just downloaded avernum for ipad. That will bide me over for a long time. Great RPG game..
I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):
The Secret World, although I might give CO a try.
... Hit it ...
