(That said, I wouldn't complain if, say, enhancement tray 3 were being given out one week....)
I wouldn't complain about "enhancement tray 3" being the freebie some week either. On the other hand I pretty much expect that will NEVER happen for the same reason you described so I'm not going to worry about it too much.

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

Oh my!

All the whingeing by people because you are getting something for nothing beggars belief. They should have not announced it and implemented it anyway then people would think that they were stitching up PS and been happy about it.

You called? Hang on, let me catch up on the thread.

*scrolls up*

Why am I not surprised.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I was not enthused by the XP Booster. But then, I sincerely doubt I'd be enthused about anything short of a character rename/character slot. And that would be bad business for them all around, giving out things that expensive for free.

I think it was a successful test, though. It makes sense for them to give people a "taste" of something that they may decide they like more of. I wish they had the same approach with the incarnate system, maybe letting premiums get a t1 Alpha slot (and limit the amount of salvage they can accrue, of course). Then again, that probably isn't a good idea either.

I'm pretty 'meh' on the whole thing, really. Who does it hurt? Nobody. Who does it help? Everybody, to differing degrees.

There is no G in "whine," and you NEVER leave the E on a verb that ends with it when conjugating it for present participle (that is to say, adding ING to the end).

I was excited to dig through the box for -my- baseball card when I was a kid. It was gambling-lite: you get a rush and a thrill but at the end you might end up lucky with a little momento of your experience.

Thank you Devs for the boon!

Oh dear me - there are so many more points with this thread than a simple typographical error in a post. Somehow I think you have missed the point and also do not have a point- do calm down son.

For me, anything free is a good thing.

Was it the most amazingly super awesome thing they could have given? No, of course it wasn't. You don't start a pilot program with your best item.

Think of it more as a test of concept than what we're actually getting.

I generally spend my points on unlockables rather than consumables so I see this as a win for me if consumables is what they will mostly be handing out.

The only consumables that I've bought were the Super Packs and that's because there were costume pieces tied into it. Personally, I can't see myself spending points on team inspirations, XP boosters, and the lot. I'd rather save the points up for Power Sets, costume bundles, etc.

Look at it this way. It's Week 1 and they set the bar pretty low on what they're offering. That means any subsequent offerings will be equal or better. You don't start with your best product and work your way down. Had they had started with a Costume Pack bundle, Magic for argument's sake, and then next week offered the XP Booster, the outcry on the forums would be infinitely worse than they are now.

With that, thank you Paragon Studios for free stuff. Free is appreciated.

If you're focusing on the actual value at hand, you're completely missing the point of it being an analogy.

My very first thought when I saw that they were giving something away for FREE was "oh, Paragon Studios, won't you ever learn?"

Hey a free $1 bill is still a $1 bill I didn't have to earn

Nope.

Edit:
I'm not mad, just unimpressed and disappointed.
Unless of course I happen to want/need a nut and bolt, and then...hey, free nut and bolt!

There's a local hardware store in my neighborhood that regularly puts out coupons for free keys, no purchase required. Keys cost a company, what, maybe a nickel to make? and are usually priced around a buck fifty. A free key isn't usually enough of a draw to get me into the store, but if I'm there, and i have the coupon on me, why not. Or alternative, if i need a key, where do you think the first place I'm going to go is?

Of course, the hardware store is hoping I will buy something else from them, but they put no obligation on me to do so, and nothing says I can't just take my key and leave. Should I express my disappointment in the hardware store for doing a crappy job of getting me to buy more stuff, Or my appreciation that they conveniently offered me something I wouldn't have otherwise had?

Eh, I think I'll take my free key with a smile, thank them, and probably go spend that dollar on a diet soda.

Exactly. I don't have a need for an xp booster, but if I ever do I'll now have one thanks to the store. And while I was in there I couldn't help but notice all the shiny toys in there just waiting to be bought.

This week: a free xp booster
Next week: Who knows? I'm looking forward to it.

Disclaimer: I already buy stuff from the store and knew it was there, but I was curious what would show up on the top page for new people coming in for their freebies. I think it is well handled.

Sadly I missed it.

Feedback:
Not easy to find as twice when trying to get to store the market locked up my computer causing a reboot of the game.

When I finally got home from work on 5/11/12 Friday, well it's not Friday some where else so even tho I can go see a Friday night movie after dinner, the temporal vortex of COH has me being displaced until such time as Saturday truly resumes.

Maybe next Friday.

Cause Oprah would give out something like $50+ to that many people, and write it off as PR.

I remember when she bought a new car for everyone who attended the taping of one season's opening episode...

Sweet b-Jebus. 3 pages? I was a fool for misunderstanding "random". A fool!

"Free" can be not worth it. If Kmart promoted that it was giving out free stuff if you show up in person, and I get there to get a bag of Ramen noodles, I'd be pretty ticked off. It would be a waste of my time and money (gas) for a twenty cent item. However, if I was already at Kmart for some other reason, it's just a free item.

If you are playing Friday, the freebie Friday item could be anything and it would be worth it. It literally takes what, 30 seconds to click the couple buttons to claim it? But it you're not at your computer Friday, then , yeah, it might not be worth running to your computer, logging in and hitting the store for a consumable item.

Still, some chance at getting something "spiffy" would be better, IMHO. Even like one in 1000 chance at a bigger thing would give a little excitement to it. People would log in here and see folks brag about getting a rocket board, rare pet or something like that. Others might be more interested in logging into the market and getting the freebie item.

CoH has been unique in the sea of cloned MMOs.There are years of possibilities still
in such a well designed, well supported and well loved game.Shutting it down now doesn't
make sense on any level except, perhaps, on some spreadsheets bottom line. I do not
consider this an act of a company that has the interests of its customers at heart. This
calls into question why I would want to be part of any further ventures involving NCSoft.

The problem with putting in a lottery pool of items is then someone/a lot of people would be jaded because they got an xp booster when someone else got an ATO or an enhancement catalyst...or.. you get the idea.

I am all for the "random" being the same random item free to all every Friday.

I love the mental gymnastics some people go thru just so they can complain about the devs giving stuff away for free.

I use to laugh at that movie Idiocracy years ago thinking it was over the top. As the years go by, it becomes less and less over the top and more like an ugly preview of the future that is coming true.

Go work customer service for a while It's not a preview of the future, this type of "customer" behavior is a daily occurrence.

I see a lot more, in life in general everywhere, of the people who complain about complainers like some old man saying: "in my day we got nothin' and liked it you young hooligans /shakecaneshakily".

And honestly, you're the ones blowing it out of proportion and making it sound like we're protesting inside the NCSoft offices when I made exactly 3 posts on this entire topic and only in this thread.
I just said my piece and promptly went about my business, while you have to come back and complain complain complain about "imaginary anger".
You just invent a reason to complain, which is much worse than just a simple "this is disappointing" post.

Hell, I just complained about you complaining. LOL

That's it for me on this topic. Either they give a bit better thing next time or we don't even bother checking after a month of "next to nothing".
Game developers never learn. You can't give too good of an incentive or too little because players will tire of both and end up pushed farther away from whatever the developers want them interested in than they were before the incentive was added.

They need to give something a little better than "a single one of their cheapest and most unfulfilling consumables", but not something too good.
(Edit: How does Firefox not know that "unfulfilling" is a word when it knows of "unfulfilled"?)

Between that, working in customer service , and my psychology background it's a wonder I still have faith in humanity at all.

At least the XP booster gave me the excuse I need to start my next character: a KM/Elec stalker *shrug*
