Freebie Friday
Short of reaching through the monitor to grab players by the lapels and give them a sound rattling the devs couldn't have done much more to promote this giveaway.
The Nethergoat Archive: all my memories, all my characters, all my thoughts on CoH...eventually.
My City Was Gone
It was also the main story displayed in the launcher so anyone playing during the period it was up for should at least have been aware something was happening. Finding out what it was about would require clicking on it but a large graphic saying Freebie Friday wasn't something that should have been easily missed.

NCSOFT may take away our servers and beloved dev team, but they can't break our spirit and community. with all your power, NCSOFT, your victory will be bitter-sweet. I, personally will be there to laugh at you when you face-plant into the ground.
Complaining that a gift you receive isn't of enough value is akin to a bum critiquing the spare change someone hands him for not being shiny enough.
It costs nothing but a moment's time to determine if it's something you want or don't. Expecting it to be something of extreme value when it is handed out on such a large scale isn't reasonable. Though it costs them little to produce and give such things, they still lose whatever revenue they could have gained by selling instead of gifting them.
Further, it is also unlikely it will be anything but consumables, so that the gift doesn't conflict with whatever enduring items account holders have purchased, which will of course vary between accounts.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Accept or decline it with grace.
There may be other instances where I wouldn't claim the freebie because I'd never use it, but I'd never complain about what it was. So add me to the "not-we" list too.

I just thought I would clarify that point.
If they are trying to get people to visit the store then it will fail if the items they are giving away are so rarely used, or so very short duration as to be a "save for an emergency" or "save until you know the exact right time to use it"(which end up being "never use" for me because that time never comes or passes by too quickly....like the Self Destruct power goes unused by me), that people can easily say "I won't use it so no point in even opening the store".
That is the point.
You need to entice people "enough" while not giving them "too much", but "enough" needs to have some below it that are "not enough".
The inspirations and SINGLE xp booster are "not enough" because they are "not useful enough" or "not long-lasting enough", thus they are about as enticing as a free piece of candy to a child who already gets more candy for free from other sources(i.e. inspirations and xp drop like candy from the game, the store boosts and inspirations are just a little better but not worth paying for if you have access to AE).
Again, I'm not complaining so much as pointing and saying "that is a failed marketing plan".
It just won't work the way they want if the items are "not enough", but they do not need to give away "too much"(like the enhancement trays and server transfer tokens would be). The best option would probably be a single costume piece or maybe 5 sets of 10 patrol xp bars. It just needs to be "enough".

There is always a minimum value.
You would be called "cheap" for giving the "minimum"(or less if you can).
It's funny how the double standards come up.
It's like the old saying "beggars can't be choosers" being applied to giving a starving person moldy rotten food with maggots and tapeworms in it to where they are "dead if they eat it, dead if they don't".
It's not about being "picky"; it's about being decent and fair and wise.
I wouldn't give a starving man something as harmful as starving or not enough to get a cheap meal at least, though I would rather feed him than give him money as that accomplishes the goal without opening it up to a scam by somebody who ends up begging up to a hundred thousand dollars a year or more.
If you don't give "enough", without giving "too much", then it just defeats the purpose and makes you look "cheap" and sometimes even looks insulting to the recipient.
Edit:
I can't wait to see people bring up the obligatory "the bum should get a job" in response to this despite the facts that I didn't bring it up originally and "getting a job" requires "being hired by somebody else who can be picky due to having more than one person to choose from".
We can't just live off the land and farm these days because of the "wonderful" concepts of "owning land" and "trespassing" and "theft of property" being applied to food in fields.(saying nothing of finding adequate, and legal, shelter as well, which is much more difficult than finding food)
That is a whole other topic though so I'll leave it at that and just say:
Think before you spout what you think is "common sense" because it may not be that simple anymore or may not apply at all.
That's funny, I thought you said all you had to say on this subject.
That is the last I'm saying about that, no matter how much you will inevitably attempt to goad me into more.

Oh wait, if they're starving to death, why are they wasting what money they have on a computer, internet access, and electricity to run the computer in the first place?
Wouldn't that money be better spent on food and shelter rather than getting access to a video game and complaining about an in game freebie?

Oh and here's your Olympic gold medal for mental gymnastics.
I meant "the last I'm saying about you, Forbin", and I am leaving it at that before I sink any closer to your level.
FYI, the "picky and fair and decent and wise" comment I made was in regards to the "bum" reference(like everything else in that post). It didn't apply so much to Freebie Fridays(neither did the whole post, mostly). (Edit: after all, nothing to do with this game is a "need", so that analogy, which I did not bring up, does not apply. Thus, my post was refuting that analogy, and the stupidity of "beggars can't be choosers" as an absolute, rather than saying anything about Freebie Fridays.)
I see the whole picture of a single post more often while you most often nitpick.
Edit:
So go ahead, read a mostly off-topic post as if it applies directly to the topic while you completely miss the actual target and point.
Actually, you are exactly the "we" I was talking about....the people who would never use one of the "practically useless" freebies and thus "WE would not bother visiting the store to claim them".
|
I will be visiting the store each week to see what's there. I already claimed the XP Booster on both my accounts. However, if the item is something I won't use, I won't claim it, because there's no point. I visit the store regularly, to see what's new, to pick up things that I do want, and to see what's there that I forgot about. I'm pretty much the exact opposite of your claim in the above quote.
@Roderick
Does anyone else find it absolutely hilarious that the guy doing all the yelling and screaming about the value of the free stuff.... Is already playing the game for free?
"I don't get enough stuff in the game for free! Give me MORE, and make it BETTER, because what I've got already isn't good enough!"
@Roderick
You don't even read other peoples' posts, do you? Just enough to "back up" what you're saying, and then ignore the rest?
|
I was just quoting the part where you said "if it were just an inspiration I wouldn't bother" because that is what I meant by "if the item sucks then we won't bother claiming it".
I actually didn't read very far into your post besides that because that is all I wanted to comment on. That happens. In fact, I just did it for your most recent post.
Don't take offense; I meant none.

What do I always say about "text and attitude"?
I'm not "yelling and screaming" about anything(the instances of caps are more emphasis, like others use the easy to miss italics), but if i was then it would be about Forbin_Project's incessant "old man syndrome" which encourages him to try to blow civil remarks way out of proportion. Even then, I wasn't angry at him, let alone "yelling and screaming".
I'm not angry at you, or taking offense even, either.
As for those who think that this will fail as a marketing strategy because the freebies aren't good enough, I think you may be underestimating the power of FREE. I've seen people practically fighting each other to get to the tiny free samples of food products offered at Costco (and some people I know say they primarily shop there because of the free samples). I've also seen people at ComiCon wait in line for 15-20 minutes just for a sticker or small poster. So I'm sure this will get many people checking the market weekly. How many actual new sales that will translate into remains to be seen.

I'm amused that, after paragraphs of rant, he has to remind us, "Again, I'm not complaining" because, you know, we might have forgotten he's not complaining after reading all those complaints.

"I want Titan Weapons free NOOOWWWW!!!!!"(Edit: I really did want something that good, but I'm not stupid enough to expect it or complain abut not receiving it. I will, however, point out when something is "not worth the paper it is printed on", "metaphorically speaking"(read like Jim Carey in The Mask))
....or I would have whined about "somebody ranting".
LOL
Seriously, you whine about complainers when you're even more of a complainer by doing so.
LOL

LOL all the way to the LOLbank.

I apologize if that is the impression you got.

Try not just read a small part of a post and then comment on it and it alone; context is very important and (as above) you could miss something in the rest of the post that changes the meaning.

Did that seriously just happen? I thought that sort of thing only happened in poorly written movies and fan fic? Dx

It's also humorous to watch as his compulsive need to get in the last word keeps him posting after saying he has nothing more to say.
Anyone have a time machine? It only has to go back about 3 days. I need to pop up behind someone and strangle him until he passes out. I don't want to kill him, because that would still technically be "suicide" regardless of the odd circumstances. Just before things fade to black, I'll whisper, "They are not random, everyone gets the same thing, and the froth that will fly from the thread you plan to create is just disgusting."
I think, in the end, we can all agree on one thing: Nothing is truly "free". In this case, you are paying with time, regardless how extremely short that time it. Everyone will value that time differently. To some, the time is worth more than an XP Booster or Team Inspiration. To others, they are breaking even or getting something much, much more valuable.
Probably a good analogy is the Day Jobs. Those are "free" powers that are available to us anytime, not just Fridays. All you have to do is take the time to go to a specific spot to log out. And, I swear, I have never, ever heard someone say, "Ok, let me log out and log in my <Insert AT Here>. Oh, wait, first I have to go to a Hopsital so I can get the non-combat regen bonus when I log back in." I'm sure someone does that, but since shortly after I13, I haven't heard it. I know I haven't done that since... ever. The tiny, temporary boost just isn't worth the time of heading to somewhere when I log out.
I can't speak for everyone, nor will I try. I can only speak for myself. All joking and hyperbole aside, I will likely not take the time to claim the free items if they are inspirations as I never use them anyways, and I likely won't take the time to get an XP Booster unless I'm already planning on playing that Friday. I don't feel any of the inspirations are even worth clicking on the market icon for, and the XP Booster isn't worth me logging into COH specifically for, even if I am just sitting around the house that day. Perhaps I'm just not the target demographic. I'm good with that.
(But, and this goes back to the insane OP, I have a gambler's heart. I would log in every Friday like clockwork for my 1 chance in 1000 for getting a Super Booster instead of the inspiration or XP Booster that you get the other 999 times. Again, that's me.)
Boiled down, people are arguing over perceived value. We can only agree to disagree on that. (Wow, "agree to disagree". That's awesome! Someone write that one down! I'm like a modern day Ben Franklin here.)
CoH has been unique in the sea of cloned MMOs.There are years of possibilities still
in such a well designed, well supported and well loved game.Shutting it down now doesn't
make sense on any level except, perhaps, on some spreadsheets bottom line. I do not
consider this an act of a company that has the interests of its customers at heart. This
calls into question why I would want to be part of any further ventures involving NCSoft.
