The Shawarma Initiative *SPOILERS* AVENGERS DISCUSSION *SPOILERS*
A spoiler on Coulson:
According to Joss Whedon (and Coulson's actor, Clark Gregg), Phil Coulson didn't actually die. Fury lied about that to motivate the Avengers. Phil survived his wound. We'll see him again. |
Now granted they might have revived him and he's currently comatose as he heals but still that sure looked like a permanent death scene.
Uhmmm.......I know this is a comic book movie and in comics death has a tendency to not be permanent except for Captain Mar-Vell (Though that might be changing due to the Phoenix Force), but Coulson looked to be stabbed in or near his heart and it sure looked like he died in front of Fury.

"I have something to say! It's better to burn out then to fade away!"

Ditto. I have to agree with this. The medical staff were there at the moment of death and they would have to be top notch. Otherwise why would they be in a highly-funded clandestine operation like SHIELD.
I fully expect to see Coulson in a future film.

Perhaps Coulson's LMD will become Vision?

I kinda disagree. While it did look like he at least passed out and maybe died, the medics were right there. And this IS SHIELD we are talking about. And something about the way Fury acted immediately after it seemed off. So I am in the "Coulson isn't dead camp" at the moment. We'll see where it goes.

As to the medics, we are talking an impalement/stabbing into the back and out the chest looking like it may have caused some rather serious arterial damage to the heart. Sure it is possible that they saved him, but I think given the wound in question that saying that Coulson realized the dangers of confronting Loki head on and activated his LMD and sent it in would be the better way of bringing him back.

Because its a superhero movie, and producers like to be funny and put easter eggs in.

Supes would be a rather peculiar choice.

As a Hulk fan, who has often been disappointed with his portrayal in various media (including comics), the period from when he first entered the fight in the invasion until the end of the movie made me very emotional. I never imagined that I'd get to see the Hulk portrayed on the big screen like this. Laugh if you like, but I teared up at seeing him single-handedly take out that massive serpent thing, and each successive scene with him just got better. Getting to see him be a hero instead of a monster, following Captain America's orders, fighting alongside Thor, and saving Iron Man was a very big deal to me.
The CG version of the Hulk also looked perfect. I had complaints about the Ang Lee hulk looking too smooth and plasticky with a baby face, and the Norton Hulk was overly detailed (muscles on muscles) and his face would distort when he'd scream, but this one was perfect.
I was really disappointed when they dropped Edward Norton, but Mark Ruffalo was fantastic.
Joss and the actors did an amazing job, the studio obviously didn't mess it up at all, and I just couldn't imagine the movie being better.

One of the first things I thought of after the movie was that Stark specifically mentioned LMDs to Coulson (jokingly, of course). So with it established that LMDs exist in this movie universe, there is an easy way to get Coulson back into the movies...and it would totally fit in with Fury wanting to motivate the team to band together.

If Coulson had been an LMD the whole time.
Meaning there is no "real" Coulson, there's only the Coulson series Life Model Decoy.
Also, am I the only person to think, "Okay, the portal device is shielded. Is the tower it's sitting on also shielded?"
<cue Stark shooting at the doohickey, seeing that it's shielded, then blowing out the floor under the doohickey>

If it can generate an impenetrable barrier out of pure energy, it can probably levitate a couple hundred pounds of machinery. Or various other easy ways to plot-handwave that one away.
Yeah, realistically, it was stupid of Tony to not try, but the story is more interesting if the invasion actually happens, so it would have to be him trying various things and still failing to stop it, which would make the movie longer but be kind of redundant with the blast-it-oh-it-didn't-work moment that it already had.
Personally, I loved how scared and amazed the alien reporting to Thanos was. He knew nothing about humans before, and all he knows about them now is that six people not only repelled, but completely wiped out the entire invading army, in less than an hour. I'd be pretty intimidated, too.
Thought for the day:

As for the poster who didn't know the q word it's from olde English which might be why you aren't aware of it.

Saw Avengers last night. I don't think I have the words to sum up the awesome. Only disappointment was the opening credits and seeing Phil buy it even though I knew it was inevitable.

I really should do something about this signature.

Might have moved the portal.
Moving the portal into the ground so New York fell into another dimension would probably not be considered a good solution.

Speaking as an English man, yeah, that word is considered a rude word, but honestly, I don't think I've ever heard anyone use it in 40 years on this planet
I'd be amazed if anyone in the general public complains about it, tbh.

Hulk struggling to pick up the hammer, then Thor comes along and picks it up instantly was pretty cool.... musta surprised Hulk just a wee bit.

The Avengers are Marvel characters. I REALLY don't think they'd put in a cameo of their strongest competitor's characters in their own studio's movie. It'd be kind of like trying to have Statesman showing up as a cameo in Champions Online...not gonna happen.
