It makes sense for Nemesis to do this, Statesman is out of the way and now Incarnates are out fighting in the Praetorian War.

He Believe paragon is at it's Weakness right now and not too many people can stop him.

I mean, c'mon, we've got people who argued what model of destroyer the ones introduced with Sutter were. Some things just kind of end up really, really *jarring* (and they're different things for different people - this just happened to hit me that way.)
Ping inside the hull, not a radar ping. Literally, the sub is pinging as it decompresses at each atmo (thats why 33 feet).

Yes, I know. (And it's sonar, not radar.) That's still an exceptionally noisy sounding mess.

Will we be getting a schedule for the Live events before this takes place? I'd like to know so I can plan to be online when the Invasion hits Virtue - being in California myself, advance notice will be great for tweaking around the work schedule to attend.

Thank you!

Same here. "After downtime" doesn't tell us much. Will it be an all day thing? Will it start at a certain time? When? We like to know in advance so we can be online, and preferably in advance before Tuesday morning.

Lord Nemesis doesn't even consider Recluse a true villain. Why would he worry about anything in Rogue Isles?

His plan is to take over Paragon while the defenders he knows about are all scattered hither and yon putting out distractions. This plan was formed way before Rogue Isles or Arachnos (as run by Recluse) was a factor.

I dunno; if I were a megalomaniacal archvillain, screaming and beating a bass drum and cymbals would be the way I'd want to start an invasion. Of course, since it's Nemesis, the "brass band" comment at the beginning of the post might be more apt.

On that note, I enjoyed the little fiction-bit, though it needs more scenery-chewing and Nemesis referring to himself in the third person. "Lord Nemesis cannot be stopped. Lord Nemesis will come upon you like a brass band banging cymbals and crush you all beneath his brass-shod boots." And so on. We have far too many "believable" villains and not enough Silver Age-style would-be world conquerors, in my opinion.

I've got to say I'm looking forward to this event, but then, Nemesis has always been my favorite high-level villain group. He may be evil, but he has style.

Ping…

Each sound signified another 33 feet…he calculated the depth of the submersible vehicle by marking the passing of the metallic report. Where other’s would have synapses firing, silently relaying commands to his body to properly adjust the dials and valves controlling the ballast levels, there was instead the steady whirring and clicking of gears and the steady hiss of steam powering his every move.
Nemesis Bought.

Ping…

660 feet

Small crystals of ice delicately broke away from his body, blanketing his chair with a thin layer of frost. The chill of the air would have made his breath visible…that is, if he still drew breath. It had been many years since Gerhardt Eisenstadt had last drawn air, having made such human concerns unnecessary well over a century ago. Whatever remained of his flesh had long since decayed, replaced by the more reliable and stronger Clockwork bodies of his own design and construction. These bodies were the purest incarnation of his genius…his brilliance…the same genius that struck fear in the hearts of all who heard his name. No longer Gerhardt Eisenstadt; He was now Lord Nemesis, and his infamy spanned generations!
Nemesis Overwrought.

Quote:
The story of his conquest to bring the whole of the United States of America under heel was still told in hushed tones by those who survived the national nightmare. Washington D.C., and most of the U.S., had been his, held in the palm of his enormous brass hand. The populace had been no match for his clockwork army and with their vaunted superheroes spread across the globe fighting the Second World War in Europe and Asia, they were powerless to stop him.

Until Marcus Cole.

Always Marcus Cole.
Nemesis Blind Spot.

Quote:
Ping

396 feet

Every time Lord Nemesis was on the cusp of global domination, on the verge of his final victory, ready to take his rightful place, Marcus Cole…no…Statesman would foil his grand design. There were others over the years, so many others, but it always came back to Statesman. The man was unkillable, not for a lack of trying. Of course, this made the notion that one as simple as Darrin Wade could succeed where he had failed…inconceivable. The theft of Rularuu’s powers was simply adding insult to injury.
Nemesis Distraught.

Quote:
It had been tempting to join the Heroes and “Villains” (there was after all only one true villain) in their fight against Rula-Wade. The very presumption that a fool such as Wade had the right to rob Lord Nemesis of his victory…well…This was his victory. He was to be the one to extract the life essence from the broken and battered body of Statesman. Victory was to be his, the plot was written, it was put in motion, it was all to happen…exactly…as…he…planned.
Wade was lucky. This was the only plausible explanation. He had obviously used his obscurity and lack of being an actual threat to accomplish the improbable.
Nemesis Train of Thought.

Quote:
Of course this occurrence was not entirely unforeseen by Nemesis. Even something as unpredictable as Wade dispatching Statesman could not fully escape his genius plans. His robotic feet clanged across the iron floor of the Prince as he walked over to the antique filing cabinet.
Nemesis Trot.

Quote:
He delicately slid the door open, flipping through the manila folders until he came across the one he was looking for: Operation Fallen Thunder

The outer folder was dusty, the paper starting to soften and fray from the passing of time. Hand typed on a Smith-Corona typewriter decades before, the plan was simple when compared to his recent, more elaborate plots. He thumbed through the pages…yes…there it was.
Nemesis forgot?

Quote:
He would capitalize on Cole’s death (any fool would), but on a far more massive, and final, scale: He would attack all of Paragon City, spreading their defenses so thin that even the combined might of the city’s Heroes would be unable to stop his automaton army. Finally, he would avenge the humiliation he suffered in Washington D.C. so many years ago. Yes, Fallen Thunder would be the lynchpin, a catalyst for other similar plots in the unlikely event it didn’t succeed.
Nemesis Long shot.

Quote:
Gears whirred and steam hissed as his mind calculated the probabilities of success, taking into account a single possible outlying factor: Tyrant was not a consideration when the plan was originally conceived. While still a threat, calculations showed that he would soon be irrelevant. The erstwhile ruler of Praetorian Earth was quickly losing his grasp on power due to the multiple incursions of immensely powerful Incarnates (Note: Investigate probability of conquering an alternate dimension.) What was not immediately clear was the alternate Cole’s end game. His notes observed a 5.7% chance of complete surrender and a 6.33% chance of simply detonating a weapon of mass destruction over his own city. There was a significantly higher likelihood of him fighting to the death, less so the chance he would abandon his seat of power. No matter. All of these possible outcomes meshed well with his simple, yet masterful plot.
Nemesis Plot!

Quote:
Lord Nemesis reached over to the brass intercom bell.

“Surface” he said. “Operation Fallen Thunder will commence immediately…under my direct supervision.”
Nemesis Haught.

On the other hand, giant metal robotic boots on metal decks do not make for very subtle travel (see "brass band" above).

On the other hand, this is Nemesis, who woudn't know subtlety if it beat him over the head in a subtle fashion while singing the Subtle Song, soooooo...

To add perspective (and a good charge to bolster RP) to the operations of submarines and the plausibility of his purported noisy evolutions, I provide a small input as a 20 year veteran submariner to entice you with answers to these pressing concerns:

1) First and foremost, even modern day subs operate using steam - yes, even nuclear powered submarines! I won't go into the nuclear physics of how it all happens, but suffice to say, steam does drive old and modern submarines (safely and without any mutagenic or radioactive side-effects)!

2) Pings. yes, as a submarine ascends from its depths, the hull expands, making noise (truthfully, more like 'popping' that 'pinging'), however, hull designs, even as far back as WWII were made well enough to not create excessive noise, thanks to proper welding and sound silencing methods. To couple with that, as a submarine ascends, the surrounding water 'warms' up a bit the closer you get to the surface. Water has different levels of pressure/tempature relationships, that depending on location, conditions and underwater currents, create what we call 'thermal layers'. These thermal layer severely distort or mask noises being made between the layers, ergo, the sub can be masked by a form of 'natural' sound silencing from anyone outside the sub's related depth in a thermal layer.

3) Internal metal noises. Subs have a special type of deck framing for all decks, allowing for expansion and contraction as the sub changes depth, that disallows the popping to reverberate out into the hull and the water. This coupled with other sound silencing materials and design (available for several decades before this date), minimizes (if not severely diminishes) such things as Nemesis' bots clang-clang-clanging along the metal decks being heard out in the water, external to the sub's hull. Diesel powered era subs didn't have this, and dropping a wrench on a deck in these older subs allowed for the noise to resonate through the metal hull and disperse in all directions out into the surrounding waters, allowing others to easily hear them with passive sonar. Again, these 'sound silencing' techniques have been out for many decades.

4) Submarine Sonar. There are a few types of sonar:

Passive Sonar: This sonar is no different that you having super hearing, listening to sounds out in the water, whooshes of surface water, churning of water by a ships's propeller/screw, etc, and then getting a bearing and range on them; the range can also be deciphered into depth.

Fathometer: In conjunction with this, a specialized type of sonar is used for what we call 'bottom bouncing' using a device we call a Fathometer, consisting of a particularly difficult-to-trace, usually low-powered sonar ping that bounces off the bottom of the ocean to relay depth, pinged at irregular intervals. A Fathometer's sonar is VERY difficult to track/trace, even today.

Active Sonar: this is a true noise maker. This is the one where we actively transmit powerful sound waves out into the water to see what waves bounce back and read as bearing and range. Normally, this wouldn't be used until a time of attack, for use with a particular stratagem or for emergencies.

5) Steam exiting the sub: All engineering power plants on a sub are a closed loop system, which means no steam escapes; it all starts as liquid/ water, then heated up to steam, the steam is used to turn the propeller shaft via turbine engines and rotors; the steam looses energy and rapidly cools to water again, where it's pumped back to the start to be used to repeat this same process over and over again.

As for Nemesis' sub's pinging, again, I'm sure its more 'hull popping' as it ascends, and as mentioned, thermal layers can easily mask these noises, making his sub very hard to detect, pending on how much sound silencing practices and materials he uses throughout his sub's design.

For our RPers, tech-heads and devs, I hope this helped answer some of your questions.

...or maybe this whole discussion is unto itself a Nemesis plot to distract you from an aerial invasion...or a mole invasion...or...*BANG*

This concludes our current discussion on any form of submarine operations! All hail Lord Nemesis!

What yacht was the despot's subplot? Nemesis mascot "Garrote" was within earshot. Distraught, the big-shot wrought a plot for naught. The upshot of the handwrought plot by the crackpot was an ascot with an inkblot that was brought to Foxtrot. The robot remains uncaught.

Actually fairly aware of most of that. Now how do you feel about a *brass* submarine and all of the above, suggested depths and the like?

And 20 years serving on a sub? Ton of respect for that - supposedly an exceptionally demanding branch of the Navy. Then again, it's suggested that if we ever send people to Mars, they'll look at submariners as they expect the environment and psychological conditions to be very similar.
