    To all of you...

    Andy,

From amongst those that shone brilliantly, you radiated like the sun.

You were the best of them, Andy. Your mark has been left, and it is eternal.

May you and your family achieve even greater achievements and prosperity.

I don't have the words. Only tears.

Fair winds and following seas, Z.

    Well done. Well done.
  3. I cannot begin to say how much this game, and you, Matt, have meant to me. Tears continue to fall this day, as they have the past few. You and this game have awakened and energized a part of my soul I had thought long since gone.

I have forwarded you a PM that best explains how much this game meant.

As a Navy man, our ship (and submarine) Captains are hard-charging, brilliant, masters of their environment, battles and men (and women). It takes a LOT for Captains to earn the respect of their men; most have to exceed their station in every single facet by 100 fold, just to earn a sliver of respect. I have only placed 2 Captains in my life that I would follow again, no matter where the path led.

You are the 3rd such Captain, Matt.

THANK YOU for all you have helmed here. Go forward knowing you have indeed made a difference and have earned my respect.

    Fair Winds and Following Seas.

    *STANDS ON DESK*

    Farewell, O Captain...My Captain.

Your weren't alone there. You and me both. I still can't stop. 20 years of US Navy submarining, and never a tear shed. Now....I. just.can't. stop.

For what its worth...awhile back I sent you a strong PM about stepping up your game; doing things to make CoH better. They were strong words. These past couple years, you, the team and the community reps have not only answered the call, you redefined it. I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of what you all accomplished. Your did us all proud.

Black Pebble, it has been an honor. You and all of Paragon Studios will be missed. Badly.

I hope everything works out for you.

In the meantime, I'm going to stroll outside and cry some more...
  5. Melissa,

This is truly one of the saddest days in my life. A portion of my soul is dying at this news, yet, just as you did, you reflected on the positives.

    My positives:

The Boston Meet & Greet: you and the PS crew were the best ever. I wish I'd had the chance to talk more one-on-one with you, but most seemed to have more burning questions about power balancing; regardless it was good to see you there.

All dev sponsored events over the last few years: Can't say enough how great it was to team and chat with all of you.

Winning costume contests hosted by devs: 4 out of 7 of these contests, I won from the dev's choice. That told me I was fashionable enough for the gods of the game to take notice. I remain to this day humbled.

In game teaming with the devs and community reps: Being invited to PUGs, AE missions, and many other team-ups made for incredible days.

Each issue: was always a fantastic display of creativity, thanks to you and the PS team. I was always surprised by how much you put into those issues.

This year, I'm afraid I won't be able to send the Majordeej Christmas 'bonus' of yummies to your offices, but know that in my heart, I will always be thinking of each and all of you.

Good luck with future work, and know you HAVE made an impact on this family's life. Thank you and God Bless.

  6. Tony,

I may not be able to provide a lot of time thanks to my job, but I can definitely toss Franklins your way as you need.

You're a good person, and whether or not this comes to fruition, know this: your efforts via the Titan Network and the maintenance of the Paragonwiki have been and continue to be awe inspiring. I cannot begin to thank you for the enormous effort you and many others have done to make your site the one-stop goto for info on this game. Your dedication to this game is unquestionable.

I'm not a praying man, but I went to church today. I prayed like I never have before. I'm also someone not prone to tears, and I've been teared up since I read the news of the sunsetting. If we can make ANY effort to save this game, then...

    I'M IN.
  7. Major Deej

    To all of you...

    Z,

You gave this job your all, and from the bottom of my heart...THANK YOU.

I cannot begin to say how impressed I've been with all you've done with this community...a community that I will say to my dying day is the BEST online gaming community EVER.

I only pray you are able to find a new job with all good haste. You're in my prayers.

Like you, I can't stop crying. Me. A retired Navy Submariner. Never shed a tear for 20 years, and now I can't stop. Dammit, this is tough.

Be proud of what you've done here, Z. If anyone could be classified as a person with heroic intent in making this game better than any other MMORPG, you would get the Medal of Honor for your work here.

    /salute

    I will miss you Z.

Goodluck and Godspeed on a quick and timely and profitable job hunt.

    I am crying.

I mentioned in another post that after 20 years of serving in the US Navy aboard submarines, facing conditions and events that would make most people go fetal and into a state of psychosis, I never shed a single tear.

    Until today.

    I can't stop crying.

Never have I felt this way about a game, however, I know it's more than a game...its this incredible heroic community.

I feel as though I've lost an immediate family member.

Listening to Evanescence isn't helping either, but that's the mood I'm in.

As my icon shows, I am in a state of despair.

    Dear NCSoft...

    NCSoft is dead to me.

I will never allow another penny to EVER see their coffers once COH is shutdown.

They've stolen the shining soul of the hero from all of us. With their decision to shutdown COH, it's only fair their blackened souls go where all despicable souls should go...HELL.

#1 - Dump much of the current story. Stage one is take back the control rooms, free hostages, click glowie in the control rooms. Fight down the corridor, and face an AV in the reactor room. Defeat the AV to win. If it's considered necessary to gimmick it up, add glowies in reactor room that must be periodically clicked to avoid empowering the AV, but I'd argue against it. No radiation damage, no red bubbles, no healing powers to claim. Kill him.

#2. Dump, or at least completely rework, Terra Volta. Damnit, some rookie heroes failed to stop the reactor from going up. Fortunately, the damage was able to be contained. So create three new trials involving the new reactor. Trial one is setting the stage for the rebuild, there's some important gear in the destroyed reactor that must be gotten before the sky raiders get it - find the macguffin before they do! Trial two is protect the workers who are building the new reactor from the attacks of the Freakshow who think the must leet uber base would be a destroyed reactor with all that good gear for the taking. Trial three is the reactor is about to be brought online, but there's a problem - Malta has kidnapped the lead scientist and They Have Plans. (The Rikti have a full zone to themselves, let's show the crazed fascists some love.)

Or dump Terra Volta altogether, and build the respecs around the DE which certain have a storyline about characters changing.

My name is Major Deej, and I approve of this message.
  12. After 5 years, 5 months and 15 days, my primary hero character on Champion server, Major Invader, has finally reached 50!

This is my first 50 on Champion server, and my 7th overall in-game.

Got a villain on Champion who is level 42...he's my next level 50 project...Baron Berlin!

To see Major Invader in his own comic, check out the links below for "The New Allied Fighters"! Issue 3 due out end of this month! (plugplugplug)
  13. I assure you, Mr. Bond, that I have been completely honest in our discussion, but you, however...you look thirsty. Here...have some Enriche bottled water from my own homeland. I KNOW you will enjoy it.
  14. I remember there was some conversation about Valiant and Zunkunft servers going english, what I believed to be with Issue 23.

Since I'm at work, just wondering for those logged in to the game...did those servers get changed as part of this issue?
  15. Wow. Entitlement marches on...

Free isn't good enough for some.

Being over the top, my assessment of freebies according to 'some' here, is that either Paragon Studios should 'pay' us to take their freebies, or PS is supposed to drop purple sets as freebies; and God forbid that someone had to access the market for 10 seconds to gain the free item...Phhhttt.

How DARE PS make us waste 10 seconds of my time accessing a freebie! It's a conspiracy! They want me to go on the market and get sucked into the black hole of the Paragon Market and spends my money!!!!!

They're as bad as when all you want is a gallon of milk at the supermarket and they make you go allllll the way to the back of the supermarket to get the milk, making me pass by candy isles, and snack isles and...ummm....OH...look! Sale on cookies this week! Must buy! OH! cool 2 for 1 deal on soda! and ....what did I come to the supermarket for...?

    uh...hmmmm....

Point being, YES, it's a way to get you to go into the market and use the system to find the freebie and purchase it, making it a weekly 'habit' to do so to get something for free. We, as the chimpanzees clicking on the button to get a treat, will enjoy doing this after awhile until it becomes a comfortable behavior that will allow more folks, once scared and disinterested in the PM, to NOW be interested in the PM and buy purchasable things from there.

The question is...do you have the willpower to accept the freebie as simply 'a freebie' without having to get all alpha about it, or follow the other train track and go "ooooh! look another new shiny in the PM! Must have! MUST BUY!" to buy anything else in the market outside of what you KNOW (and can afford) you intended (or planned) to get while in the instance of getting your weekly button-pushed treat...er...freebie?

There is no pleasing everyone, but everyone these days always expect to be pleased. See what it is they are doing with the freebie and simply ask this, "do I want the freebie this week? Yes or no? If yes, spend 10 seconds and go get it and get on with your life. If no, then leave it alone and go about your business.

Stating you are 'disappointed' in the freebie choices, or that other older 'free' longevity-unlocked veteran rewards (now Paragon Rewards) items were 'sad' is simply parallel to grumbling that after a week of rain, the sun finally came out and it turned into a beautiful day to go outside....but instead of going outside and enjoying the sunlight and nice weather, you choose to stay indoors with the curtains drawn and blame the sun for daring to come out. (i.e., getting bitter about a freebie).

Hint: enjoy the sunlight while its out and move on.
  16. 1. Quivers. No, they don't have to be asymetrical; align them down the spine, vertically. A variety of quivers would be nice too (Native American, tech, mutant, elvish, etc.). I don't care about the arrows or animations drawing issues; I wantz me quivers!

    2. Kheldian Sash. Personally I like the sash ALOT. I'd like to have cloth and metal sheen variants, as well as long cape-flowing like lengths (think Phoenix costume sash).

    3. More weapons styles/themes. I know these aren't particularly 'costumes', but still we need more styles of weapons for Assault Rifle, Staff fighting, Titan Weapons, broadsword, mace (especially this one!), and handguns.

    4. Arachnos costumes ported as NORMAL, free options.

    5. Jetpack set. We need a variety of different jet packs as backpacks that have the flame animation each time we activate fly or hover.

    6. High Rez faces and hair. It's time to get more faces and hair fixed up.

    7. Update existing older costume patterns/sets to high rez with texture. Speaks for itself. We werer told this was in the works, but haven't seen this happen hardly at all.

    8. Combined fiery aura and trail aura. I like the idea of BEING on fire and leaving a TRAIL of fire at teh same time ala Human Torch.

    9. Add more full helmets. The old ones are...old. tech, mechanical, sci-fi, etc.

    10. Cape styles. Like to see a few more types of capes...and fix the cape that has the techy-looking honeycomb pattern on it...REMOVE THE (tacky) WRENCHES!

Thanks for doing this Dink! All respect to you if you can even mette out one of these.

If the hull were made of pure or even layered brass, regardless of thickness, it would have imploded like a crushed beer can prior to 400 feet, mostly due to the metal's weak properties and the inability for any form of applicable weld to hold depth to.

Obviously, Lord Nemesis has 'brass plating' atop the standard flexible composite steel construction of his submarine's hull (using lots of brass paint and touch ups for added effect).

Thanks for the compliment on the sub service time! It's a job that is definitely not for everyone, and even those few that do it can be classified as 'abby-normal' in many psychological aspects (you find many 'unique' ways to find ways to pass time and look for distractions when you're on patrol for 6 months at a time...).

When it comes to space travel, we basically wrote the book NASA's been using for its space program...that is, if they still HAD a space program...

Suffice to say the wife enjoys me being 'permanently inport' and retired from service (and I'm enjoying having my two feet on terra firma, breathing unprocessed air)...that is, until I renew my pilot's license...

Or the freaking huge plumes of steam coming out of the surface of the water.

To add perspective (and a good charge to bolster RP) to the operations of submarines and the plausibility of his purported noisy evolutions, I provide a small input as a 20 year veteran submariner to entice you with answers to these pressing concerns:

    1) First and foremost, even modern day subs operate using steam - yes, even nuclear powered submarines! I won't go into the nuclear physics of how it all happens, but suffice to say, steam does drive old and modern submarines (safely and without any mutagenic or radioactive side-effects)!

    2) Pings. yes, as a submarine ascends from its depths, the hull expands, making noise (truthfully, more like 'popping' that 'pinging'), however, hull designs, even as far back as WWII were made well enough to not create excessive noise, thanks to proper welding and sound silencing methods. To couple with that, as a submarine ascends, the surrounding water 'warms' up a bit the closer you get to the surface. Water has different levels of pressure/tempature relationships, that depending on location, conditions and underwater currents, create what we call 'thermal layers'. These thermal layer severely distort or mask noises being made between the layers, ergo, the sub can be masked by a form of 'natural' sound silencing from anyone outside the sub's related depth in a thermal layer.

    3) Internal metal noises. Subs have a special type of deck framing for all decks, allowing for expansion and contraction as the sub changes depth, that disallows the popping to reverberate out into the hull and the water. This coupled with other sound silencing materials and design (available for several decades before this date), minimizes (if not severely diminishes) such things as Nemesis' bots clang-clang-clanging along the metal decks being heard out in the water, external to the sub's hull. Diesel powered era subs didn't have this, and dropping a wrench on a deck in these older subs allowed for the noise to resonate through the metal hull and disperse in all directions out into the surrounding waters, allowing others to easily hear them with passive sonar. Again, these 'sound silencing' techniques have been out for many decades.

    4) Submarine Sonar. There are a few types of sonar:

Passive Sonar: This sonar is no different that you having super hearing, listening to sounds out in the water, whooshes of surface water, churning of water by a ships's propeller/screw, etc, and then getting a bearing and range on them; the range can also be deciphered into depth.

Fathometer: In conjunction with this, a specialized type of sonar is used for what we call 'bottom bouncing' using a device we call a Fathometer, consisting of a particularly difficult-to-trace, usually low-powered sonar ping that bounces off the bottom of the ocean to relay depth, pinged at irregular intervals. A Fathometer's sonar is VERY difficult to track/trace, even today.

Active Sonar: this is a true noise maker. This is the one where we actively transmit powerful sound waves out into the water to see what waves bounce back and read as bearing and range. Normally, this wouldn't be used until a time of attack, for use with a particular stratagem or for emergencies.

    5) Steam exiting the sub: All engineering power plants on a sub are a closed loop system, which means no steam escapes; it all starts as liquid/ water, then heated up to steam, the steam is used to turn the propeller shaft via turbine engines and rotors; the steam looses energy and rapidly cools to water again, where it's pumped back to the start to be used to repeat this same process over and over again.

As for Nemesis' sub's pinging, again, I'm sure its more 'hull popping' as it ascends, and as mentioned, thermal layers can easily mask these noises, making his sub very hard to detect, pending on how much sound silencing practices and materials he uses throughout his sub's design.

For our RPers, tech-heads and devs, I hope this helped answer some of your questions.

...or maybe this whole discussion is unto itself a Nemesis plot to distract you from an aerial invasion...or a mole invasion...or...*BANG*

This concludes our current discussion on any form of submarine operations! All hail Lord Nemesis!
  21. I admire the OP's ability to think outside the box, but in this instance, my personal input is /unsigned.

Rogues and Vigilantes are the only ones who will profit by this. There is already a mechanism in place, albeit located in places inefficiently accessible, through the Submarine contacts.

I consider a player character's choice to do an alignment change a 'personal' choice (badging or otherwise), and not something that should be tasked upon a true (i.e., non-solo) SG (emphasis on the G for 'group') core membership's prestige and resources to facilitate.

Personally, I wrote up a long list of reasonings why I don't think this is a good idea, but of course, my arguments are related to how it would affect MY SGs (heroic or villainous), rather than out of concern for your simple question of 'why not?'.

I don't like the general principle of allowing villains/rogues into my hero/vigilante bases. Why don't we just invite Al-Qaeda to come visit our US/Allied Military bases and give them access to our motor pool to take them wherever they want to go? Oh and here, Mr. Al-Qaeda, here's access to our salvage crafting table where you can make some grenades and weapons and enhancements from a recipe, all the easier to blow up and kill my fellow allies...bet that would go over well, hmmm?

I also worry that doing this could set in a motion an alignment change in your SG that a majority of SG mates/founding members don't want or never intended to allow for the theme/direction of their SG.

I may be looking at this in a different way than the OP, but after 20 years in the military, this reeks of a simple lack of worldly common sense to me.

Granted this is simply a game, but just because the mechanics are available to do this in this game, doesn't necessarily mean they should be applied.

To me, this is a big /UNSIGNED.

Edit: as an additonal note, I'm sure it would grind a few SG member's gears if when they port into their base to spend some time crafting, etc, that the first sight they see upon porting into the base is a band of villains standing around using the SG base's resources freely, unopposed. Enemy collaboration, anyone?
  22. Here's my recommendations:

    1) Boomtown. It's time; long overdue. Up the zone level; my best guess to cover holes might be 30-35. Although I'd rather make this a hero zone, with the devs' prior decree, it would obviously only be allowed as a Co-Op zone.

Take this unused zone and do a "Faultline" turn on it; 1/2 rebuilt, 1/2 desolation. Rebuilt half should have new Atlas Park style buildings, streets, etc with an airport (which, by the way, is shown on the old Paragon City maps).

Put an Arachnos/5th Column/Council base in the desolation zone for villain/rogue player characters to zone into; Place a forward command station closer to the line of demarkation between the two rebuilt halves of the zone.

This is a PERFECT zone to push the 5th Column and Council War to a new battle head. Also, Hero Corps is a totally usused entity. Let's get them into the game by trying to rebuild their HQ, while being attacked by Boomtown baddies.

Take out Babbage GM and put in huge 5th Column Mech Robot GM.

Here's a couple zone event options:

Zone Event 1 - Hero Corp HQ Construction Site.
    • yellow recitcled characters of Hero Corp and whatever villainous group(s) the devs choose (Arachnos, 5th Column, Council) (this allows for vigilantes and rogues to choose a side similar to the "Protestor zone event" in Nova Praetoria). Use phasing tool to show a 'rebuilt' Hero Corp building or (if villains win) a destroyed Hero Corp building, surrounded by NPC victors.
Zone Event 2 - 5th Column vs Council vs Longbow War/Battle.
    • yellow recitcled characters of 5th Column, Council and Longbow. Player character gets to choose which faction to start attacking; the 'attacked' faction goes to a red reticle; others, blue and/or yellow. Same as "Protestor Zone Event" in Nova Praetoria, but to a larger scale.
Also, I'd add in repeating mission NPCs in the zone, but to add spice, have one for each alignment: a hero NPC for hero missions, a 5th Column NPC for villain missions, a Hero Corp NPC for Vigilantes, and (insert faction here) for Rogues.

    2) Steel Canyon

Tweak the building styles to have a more modern look with reflective glass; keep the general layout. Add the long awaited "Space Port" to the upper right corner of the Steel Canyon map.

Update the factions in their respective zones.

Add a zone event for the Tsoo.

Add a repeatable missions NPC to fight Tsoo, Outcasts, etc.

Do (as recommended by someone earlier) an armored car heist zone or instanced event.

Move the base portal to in front of the University.

    2) Port Oakes
This zone only needs a few functional tweaks; not necessarily cosmetic. Overall, the building and structures are OK, but there is a lot of wasted chances for doing content here.

Add a ghostly Pirate GM to the ghost fort area (Ghostly Pirate GM shows when one of the spectral badges are earned) , or a large mutated Coralax out in the southerly waters by Oil Spill (Mutant Coralax arrives when Coralax zone event is done).

Move Veluta whateverhernameis up towards the ghost fort; redo the ghost missions she had to something with a REAL purpose (maybe involving the ghosts at the fort...hmmm?)

Do something with the Family faction for goodness sake. There is a SLEW of mafioso-type, Rhode Island wise-guy stuff that is screaming to be missioned-up and arc'd out here. example: Gang War arc/storyline, with Family/Mook NPCs, each mission is you working one side against the other for your own villainous profit etc, then have both Family factions find out about your duplicity and both factions attack you for the final mission.

Couple zone events here also to choose from:

Zone Event 1 - Family Gang War
    • Take two family factions (Family and Mooks (or a new Family-type mob faction)) are have a random-generated war in the streets, with dozens of Family thug NPCs with machine guns following one of two invisible paths through Port Oakes, drilling everything in site, including the RIPs, Arachnos, villain NPCs, civilians, etc. Have the war originate or end in the Family mansions area in top-to-mid center of the Port Oakes map. Have them all yellow reticled until you attack them.
Zone Event 2 - Coralax Rampage
    • Use the Oil Spill Area and/or the waters between the sunken oil tanker and oil spill. The Coralax want a valuable artifact to provide for the Leviathan, but you want it for profit; fight a small (specific) band of Coralax, and then have their numbers get larger and more powerful each phase of the zone event. When the player character wins, they get a souvenir/badge/buff for defeating the Coralax rampage and gaining the artifact.
These are merely suggestions, but ones I'd enjoy whole-heartedly. They're not that tough to do or much work beyond what the devs have already done.

    Food for thought.
