Hawkeye -- world's worst archer?

I think its a matter of degree. Some people nitpick anything, but I don't think the wired articles qualify. Especially because as the writer points out, the act of doing it wrong was probably causing injury to the actor.

Movies make technical errors all the time, but the question shouldn't be "does this error make the movie bad" the real question should be "shouldn't we strive to do better next time?"

Based on the analysis of the wired author, two of the things Hawkeye does right and everyone else does wrong is a) he doesn't use the full power of his bow and b) he injures himself when he fires.

"Injures himself when he fires" is serious competition for worst superpower ever.

But, Hawkeye is a much better archer than the person who wrote the article, so we can safely conclude that he knows what he is doing. a) is actually evidence of how awesome he is, since he doesn't even need to use the full power of his bow! As for b), its entirely possible that Hawkeye is so tough that he simply doesn't mind if his bowstring hits him.

In conclusion, can the writer of the article do this? If not, then their argument is invalid.

I mean, two of those arrows aren't even touching the bow at all. That's how good an archer he is!

The answer to that, I'd say, lay in whether or not the discrepancies are such that laypersons are likely to notice and/or be bothered by them without a professional pointing them out.

There are things with real world analogs and things without them. I cant talk about darth maul's using the force in episode 1, because its not something that has a real world analog, i can talk about his staff style and unarmed strikes(which are awesome) because he drew them form existing martial arts styles(yes its a lightsaber, but he used it like a staff). thats the difference.

the hulk is just straight up fantasy, ironman's armor is fantasy, but archery exists. one could likely say the same with black widow because she uses guns and martial arts, which we can compare with real styles. Heck, to be technical, i liked how in thor he didnt use a particularly disciplined fighting style, but used something closer to professional wrestling, and it made sense for his personality and build.

What in tha-how's he-I don't even-

What are the other 2 arrows being propelled by? Does he have more invisible bowstrings? What's he pulling the bowstrings back with? His knuckles? How is that string *NOT* gonna hit his arm and screw up that shot? And he still managed to aim them all just right to get their varying effects.

...Damn, Hawkeye is badass >_>

I kind of see it from the other angle. In a movie with so many completely unrealistic and impossible things in it, it would be nice if the one or two real things were done correctly.

If this woman can hit her targets without using "perfect archery form" the author was nitpicking about

Then Hawkeye can shoot any way he likes.

Three quick comments:
1) Wouldn't it be interesting if CoH gave us this as an option for archery power customization?
2) Do I even have to ask where this woman keeps her quiver of arrows?
3) That tall white building behind her is the Burj Al Arab so we know this happened in Dubai, for whatever that's worth.

I do believe that's happened on this forum...

True. So if Hawkeye ever did actually miss a shot with his bow....

He could just hold up a picture of Thor, Ironman, and Hulk and the enemy would flee in horror. If they are smart.

No disrespect to Captain America and Black Widow; they are great but just are not particularly scary.

I have no real doubt about that - this is the Internet after all.

Still, criticizing something in a movie that also exists in real life is always going to be a little more reasonable than arguing about which version of "make-believe" is better than the rest.

This is kind of a tangent and more towards movies making technical blunders than anything else.

I love the first Die Hard movie and will watch it when it comes on all the time but there is one scene that just bugs me to no end. When the police storm the building unsuccessfully and get shot up. They send there armored ATV in (which the S.W.A.T. captain calls a car, ugh), when the nerd breaking into the vault see's it on the security camera's he announces over the radio "listen up guys, the police have themselves an RV!"

I keep expecting Robin Williams to lean out the window and start waving to the camera.

Who needs perfect form when you still hit your target?

Besides, what exactly *is* a professional archer? A circus show act?

Lastly, the whole premise of comparing reality to fiction is a moot point to begin with. Hell, one of the comparisons is a cartoon.
:P

Yeah... well the S.W.A.T. captain calling the ATV a "car" is a little weird all things considered. But you do realize that when the bad guy says "the police have themselves an RV!" that he's saying it in a mockingly sarcastic way right? He's not literally saying the police are driving a civilian Recreational Vehicle - he's making fun of the fact that the police are using an "overblown massive vehicle" to assault the building. It was pretty obvious that he was using the term "RV" in a derisively joking manner and frankly that made it one of the more memorable quotes from the movie.

I was actually looking for a pic of this 14 year old performer I saw on a talent show but that was all I could find last night.

Here's the vid clip of the girl I was thinking of. And she's that way shooting blindfolded.

Now all I can picture is the Griswold's showing up to Walley World in a tank.

For *all* technical issues? There's no such thing as laypersons in general. There are people not involved in any one particular area of expertise, but people who literally are not knowledgeable in *anything* are not laypeople, they are idiots. Applying this rule to all possible errors, we end up with movies that are allowed to make medical errors, legal errors, piloting errors, nautical errors, typing errors, plumbing errors, retail errors, architectural errors, psychological errors, mechanical errors, military errors - basically, each error only detectable only by people directly familiar with the topic, and yet eventually all but the most vacant vegetables in the audience would be noticing at least some of them.
