Without the Undead Slaying Axe?
Seriously?
'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

I just have a female character who'd look good in a pilgrim hat, and the way the costume people work around here it would end up being made a male-only costume piece if the they also had a bonnet (Which would, in turn, be made female-only, of course-).
I'd prefer to avoid that. <_<

Congratulations Paragon Studios--you've reinvented the Edsel.
From an optimistic viewpoint:
Every week that has lame items on the store is a week I don't have to question if I should break out my wallet and buy points. My free points get invested toward future buys.
I prefer this to something I'd want to buy on a weekly basis.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

well good luck ,i will pass, but some will buy

WOW
lol, do you people really think they will be able to release a new powerset or a gigantic costume bundle every week? The price? That is called excellent marketing strategy. See, lots of people will say " pffft, no way, thats too much!!"(like the price is right gameshow game) And then they wont buy it, and a few will come here and say thats too much. But! A lot of people will buy it, because they have lots of money and dont care(you would be amazed at how many people fall into this catagory these days) or they are OCD and will buy it for that. And then, lots of people will hand a good chunk of money to NC, and NC will rejoice. AND THEN!!!! A few months from now they will offer it at a sale price, and more people will buy it because at that point the price will be more in line, and then NC will get more money and rejoice. So, in this way, they get people to buy the product for lots of money(relatively speaking) and then more people to buy it at what would be considered a "fair" price. it's like new cars. People will buy a 50k dollar car, drive it for a year and trade it in for 25k with like 7k miles on it- because they have money to burn. And then the rest of us shmucks will buy it "almost new" for like 2/3 the price of new, because "thats a fair price" It really is all genius. I bet the marketing model for the "new free game" rakes in more cash then the 15 dollar sub could ever dream of. Heck I bet people would be really surprised at the amount of players that went all in so to speak and bought out the store in the first week. And NC rejoiced. |
I think you and I have different definitions of genius. However, I do agree with your point regarding the likeliness of having a power set of costume bundle each week.
I will definitely pass on this item. No chance of a purchase here. I can't imagine too many people wanting it. I'm assuming Paragon will never reveal how well their various items sell; heck, we can't even get a straight answer when we ask who the lead dev is these days.
Perhaps Paragon could poll the players to vote for types of items they would prefer to see. Have a pop up appear when you log in directing you to the site to vote.
New item every week means variety. Some weeks you'll like what we're putting up and some weeks you won't. We accept this, and will watch the sales of said items and react accordingly.
There's no magic formula that's guaranteed to make us produce a universally loved item each and every week, hell some people even poo pooed Street Justice. To each their own. It's a learning process and we're going to toss some weekly specials on the market that are going resonate really strongly with the Community, and some that will not. Great thing is, next Tuesday is only a week away. |
id step it up with the "weekly" stuff right quick..your losing more money..i just gave someone else over 120 dollars i would have spent for the sets and staff.*shrugs* oh well.....now if youll excuse me..i got some lvling to do on uc3
If you have no decent items to put up and have to do a quick bundle to keep up the schedule, you could get a lot of acclaim just by including a sale with it.
A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!
Cool! Thanks marketing. I'm low on points and glad this isn't anything I want. If you had me spending every week I'd be poor as a church mouse by now!
Will check in next week to see what the new offering is.
So I guess what I want to know is, has anyone actually bought inspirations from the store? I don't mean getting them via veteran rewards, I mean looking at the store itself and saying "yes, 120 seconds of slightly-better-ness is worth that price".
You can use terms like "learning curve" if you like, but this is the kind of thing you really shouldn't need a live market experiment to learn.
A circle forms, everybody comes round
Just to hear the incredible sound
Of a genius smashing expectations

I seriously question the folks in marketing who think some of these "bundles" are a good idea, especially the release time of them.
Also, if you make special temp powers available in the store (Warwolf Whistle, Holy Shotgun Shells) there's no incentive to actually play the arcs to earn them.
I mean seriously, if everything's available in the store, what's the point of playing?
But on that note, just out of curiosity, if you already have the Warwolf Temp power (or the Shotgun shells) earned in-game, then buy the pack, do you get a separate temp power for them or they overwrite any existing ones?

"New with i25, CoH:Sims Edition! Collect 'fun tokens' to increase your character's happiness level! Don't forget to use the bathroom from time to time! And be sure to wash your hands! Enjoy fine dining at 'Sparky's Bar and Grille!' Don't let your hero or villain go out on the town on an empty stomach!"
But yea... you're right, people play for fun. But the way I see it, the more you can buy in the store without having to do the pre-reqs in game, the less incentive there is to do it.
As always, YMMV and that's just my opinion.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just questioning whether or not the choice to put unlockable temps in the store is a good idea.
I think it's a safe assumption that most people like to do the least amount of work for the most amount of reward.
The devs spent the time and effort to put certain arcs, rewards, goodies, etc in game. If they're made available from day 1 of a hero's career there's less of a reason to run the content in game, especially with the focus lately being on Incarnate content.
Do I want to spend time weeding through lower arcs or level as quickly as I can to get the big shiny?
Anyway, as I said, YMMV.

Hmm. It must be just the consumable aspect that's bothering me.
|
However, I realise that many people may spend points on consumables, so I don't have a problem with them been in the store.
As long as they don't market them in a such a way to try and trick people into the purchase without realising they are limited consumables, or worst, include then a deal with non-consumables just to jack up the price.
In this case I don't see any issues.
That's okay. Everyone has different views - that just happens to be mine.

I paid to unlock capes at level 1 rather than wait until level 20, because I feel that many of my characters are "incomplete" at character generation and the ability to think of a concept and create it in the character generator is one of the big appeals for this game for me.
I don't really see playing this game as work, at at least I feel that I shouldn't. Its nice to get rewarded for mission arcs and things like that, but ultimately playing the game itself should be rewarding and fun. One of the better ways that City of Heroes achieves this is by having players decide which content to run and which not to. If all I want is the "reward" (a costume piece or temp power I probably should have anyway based on my heroic concept), I shouldn't have to run content I don't care about or waste time buying/selling at Wentworths in order to get that piece for my character.
It's nice that I have an alternative way of skipping some of the more tedious aspects of the game so I can focus on playing my heroes and running his story. Why should my roman-themed hero have to go to Rome and fight killer Romans before he can have his proper costume? Why should he have to wait 20 levels before the costume creator will let me make the character I want?
That being said, I was never very interested in the idea of temporary powers to begin with so this bundle doesn't interest me. Maybe some sort of "rechargeable" but not one that simply goes away until you invent/purchase it again. Plus the powers themselves aren't very spectacular or impressive.
If the game provides a means of getting for free what others choose to pay for, that seems like the ideal balanced hybrid model to me. If the pricing was right, I might even consider purchasing enhancements as a preference to "wasting time" building them.
But its not like "oh, well now that I've bought this I don't need to play anymore". If I don't feel the driving need to work anymore, that's probably a good thing because I'd rather by playing.
Plus availability is different from acquisition. Even if every reward was available on the Market, having choices between choosing which to purchase and which you're willing to earn can only improve the game.
That's my perspective. I'm not saying I don't respect yours, too, and I know a lot of people share it, but I just can't relate to it. I'm very much in favor of the idea of the paragon market (if not its pricing) making locked content easier to access.
I'd be in favor of them selling, for example, the Atlas Medallion badge. For those willing to buy it, it would cut out an annoying repetitive task from the building of their characters and help them focus only on their missions or other things they like about the game. For those unwilling or unable to spend money in the Paragon Market, they can invest a bit of time into unlocking the benefit the same as they've always been able to.
Would I run the Atlas Medallion errands if a simple purchase from the market meant I wouldn't have to? Probably not. And I don't regard that as a bad thing. Would I run the Zombie Apocalypse if I already had the benefit unlocked? I probably would, because fighting zombies is fun, especially when teamed up with others during a holiday event. It comes down to being able to customize your game experience, which is awesome for a game with so many players that embraces so many different genres and interests.
In the end, I expect Incarnates will be their compromise. They'll likely use the Paragon Market to eventually make everything available except Incarnate stuff, which you'll have to earn.
But we'll see. It's an interesting time to live in Paragon City.

Yo!
Kinda missed a marketing idea there.
Did you notice that the baseball club from St. Louis won the big game?
Did you notice that you have an in game item called a St. Louis slammer? (of course you do its on sale)
Well a free facebook promo code giving one away would of been aces!
But at last no, instead you make a temp bundle themed around zombies on the last day of halloween event. Then you want how much money?
I think your HR person needs to find that person behind this idea, and hand them one of those clear cups and ask for a sample. Cause the person be smoking something.
