Yes... and dumb.

Also, Pepsi Max was a tad more subtle about it, but it was clear that it was marketing a Diet soda to dudes and not women.

It makes precisely as much sense as "only women eat yogurt."

It is a cyclical marketing trend. Nothing to see here.

(In specific, I think it is a response to the 'success' of the Old Spice ad campaign.)

City of Heroes was my first MMO, & my favorite computer game.

I think a lot of it is also tongue-in-cheek. Old Spice's commercials are so over the top, it's more for the comedic impact than it is for "making it manly." Same as the Dos X's commercials.

No one really thinks it's making you manly. Not even the people selling the product think you're really going to believe it. But they want to sell the "attitude" of their product, and poke a little fun at themselves as well.

Look at SlimJims. They have a market. Do you really see hot chicks scarfing down fake beef jerky on a regular basis? I know I don't. So it only makes sense to play up to the people who are really buying the product. More men drink beer than women, so it suits Budweiser to sell to men. If you don't think it makes sense, just think about the number of times you've seen Maxipad commercials aimed at men. Advertising to your market just makes the most sense.

Now, there are a few companies that really believe they're product makes you manlier, but they've been drinking from their own kool-aid for too long. But I don't find them to be the majority, or "the trend."

I really only have this response to give.

Nope. But I am from an age when the Man Show was popular,a time political correctness was not even thought of, that action movies were geared for just action did not have love interests in them, where actors like Burt Reynolds and others loved fast cars and faster women.

I miss the 70's and 80's.

Aw. I was totally hoping this would be a "what do you think is a FOR MEN item that should be advertised.

To which, I'd've replied:

"War Mace+Energy Aura! So Strong! And Pretty... but for MEN!"

/But alas, it is not that sort of thread.

Uhh, The Man Show was only on like 10 years ago, so...?

Advertising to a man's sense of masculinity is as old an advertising ploy as advertising to women's vanity. Because it works. Not all men are masculine. Not all women are pre-occupied with their appearance. However, social conditioning that starts from the time you're old enough to know that you're a boy and she's a girl makes sure that it hits a broad enough target base to succeed.

This is just plain old fashioned advertising sense.

It also tastes way better than Diet Pepsi. Do I feel more manly for drinking it? Not really.

Pepsi MAX > Diet Pepsi
Coke Zero > Diet Coke
Dr. Pepper 10 = Diet Dr. Pepper

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

Trend?

Let's ponder upon the Marlboro Man, circa 1954. Of course, such marketing goes back even further than that...

Hunting mammoths, now that's for manly men!
