So what names did you all manage to get or not get?

As I said in the other thread, I missed getting Willow and that makes me a little sad... but I managed to claim a few others that I'd always wanted and couldn't have on my home servers.

I got Whisper, Merlin, Starlight, Shakti, Papageno (Tamino and Pamina are on Liberty XD), Huginn and Muninn. The first four have already been started and the fifth will be on his way once Titan Weapons is live. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the raven twins yet, but they're not going to sit idle forever. I like the names too much for that.

And, yeah... Since it *is* the "Exalted" server (and I'm a fan of the tabletop game-), I also have Abyssal and Raksha. Two of my three favorite factions... Alas, Sidereal was already taken. XP

I managed to get:

Night Wasp
Redstar
Wolf Man
Bison
Crone
Time Maven
Panamerican
Red Knight
Golden Eagle
Silver Guard
Megalith
Moxie
Bodhisattva
Crimson Spirit

I missed out on Athena, I've always wanted it for my main currently on Virtue, but I'm happy with what I got. I'll probably release most of these since I don't plan on playing so many new characters on one server.

On another note, released Win in favor of another name.

For example, like once of my choices earlier, that I missed: Someone creates Intense, but leaves him at level 1 and never plays him, preventing anyone from getting the name. (Unless you use Entense, but that isn't the same)

There's one exception, and it was a Knightblade that I met on Champion a few years ago. He'd had the character since beta.
There are some people that think of a toon name before the rest of their toon concept and want it for later so they'll create that level 1 toon. Long ago there were times when not lvling that toon to like 10 would risk the loss of the name, but I don't think that game function's been used in ages from the sounds of the threads I've read this year.

I'm not Trying to start anything, but what's with all the one-word names? I didn't count, but of the names across these VIP threads, probably 75% of them are single-word names.

One word names tend to look more 'iconic' and fit the superhero/villain comic style. They're also a lot more obvious (and depending on your view, less creative) so tend to be snatched up quickly. So when a new server appears, yeah, a lot of the names people are going for (and thus report in threads like this) will be one word names.

Are you talking about new characters for the patch?

I had reserved "Temporal Girl" before the issue was released, and to be honest I was surprised it wasn't taken.

I didn't save any others, though I'll be setting up and designing my street justice tanker before much longer. (I still can't decide on a primary, but it will probably just be invulnerability. I don't want willpower, shield, or super reflexes for this tanker, and even not including those, invulnerability seems like the best fit...)

Some folks like one word names as an extension of simplicity of theme. You might as well ask (in your best Seinfeld) what's the deal with all the one-word names in comics because it is fairly common. Sure, there are plenty of two word and compound word names too but simple one-word names have plenty of precedent and representation in the genre. My Exalted list - which I intend to post shortly - has quite a few one-worders on it.

I've been asked by a few people now about and what names I managed to get on Exalted so I might as well post them. I generally don't like to do this because it either puts a few people on your tail about a specific name or generates this kind of post:

Oh, you got _______? Well, you should know that in Issue 14 of Comic X, the fourth henchman killed was called that and even though the company has been out of business for years and nobody besides me remembers the fourth henchman, you could get generic'd. I'm just trying to warn you, man!

I'm looking at Exalted two ways: (A) An active server to retire beloved characters to when I've done all I can do with them but still may want to take them out for a spin now and then or (B) A potential new home if F2P makes my home server of choice untenable. I should mention that I don't expect (B) to happen and I'm actually looking forward to the infusion of new blood. There is plenty of jackassery that goes on now at the hands of our fellow paying members - to expect the free players to somehow make it worse feels pretty unfair.

I'm going to break the list into two parts. The A List are not the "best" names - they are the characters I either have on other servers that I will bring to Exalted at some point and/or are characters that I've already transferred. A couple of them are preferred names for existing characters that I could not get on their home servers but will rename when they hit Exalted. It is highly unlikely that I would give up anything on this list at this time:

The A List
Agent Archer
Attache
Aurgelmir
Black Racer
Chrono King
Crackdown
Doctor Epoch
Hellrazor
Hellstone
Highbrow
Illuminoid
Janet Planet
Liberta
Manphibian
Mime
Monument
Satin Doll
Technoid
Trojan
Wildman

The B List are the names I've come up with over the years with various concepts I've wanted to try. Each and every one is a character I'd like to play at some point if I can find the time - many of them even have costumes saved in the creator. I might trade one away for another I prefer or release one here and there but most of these I will probably be holding until I see how F2P checks out. If I don't end up playing Exalted, these will likely be let go here and there but I've wanted some of these for so long that I foresee that I'll be trying to make time for them.

The B List
Aviatrix
Bonafide
Chill Factor
Cold Spell
Cold Warrior
Coldstone
Columbia
Gekko
Death Knight
Deathwatch
Homunculus
Humanoid
Imperium
Kingfish
Libertas
Lamassu
Lycanthrope
Majorette
Megaladon - unintentionally misspelled in my haste - I sent Goblin Queen a PM
Mermaid
Mordred
Overman
Provocateur
Samurai Lincoln
Sand Scarab
Satyr
Sideshow
She-Devil - already someone in line for this one if I give it up but it is one that I've long wanted
Shrew
Silver Bullet
Silver Streak
Simon Magus
Sky Pilot
Star Centurion
Stegosaurus
Stiletto
Sylph

If you like something on the B List, send me a PM. I really want to wait until F2P hits to see how things will shake out before I start releasing them but I'll make a note of your global if you were interested in something. Other releases I'll probably just post to the Exalted Name Watch.

Only bothered transferring a single character over and found out the name "Chronology" was taken (fairly obviously), so I've pinched the name "Rapid". Not really fussed in playing Exalted after seeing all the dev events are timed for US prime, so if you want the name then feel free to beg for it.

Did a small edit on my above list. Got some new names for future toons. Though some are up for trade if people really want them.

I wanted to snag "Razor" on Exalted, but missed out on it. Whoever got it must've worked ultra fast, as I was trying to snag it as soon as i21 came live. Ah well. So I'll stick with Citizen Razor on Liberty for now.

Umm.. shouldn't 'Ajax' be unavailable? Isn't he a character in the game lore?

I ask because I just snagged it.

Razor is a blocked name.

Very true. Same as Victoria, Troll, Hades (is taken on Virtue), Fortunata, Hercules (is taken on Freedom and Virtue) Tarantula, James, King, Dracula, Alucard, Skull, Neko, Sakura and Hunter.

I got the one name that will cause the greatest hero or powerful villian to run. My name will even cause the mysterious Devs to quake in fear!

I am the Lag Monster !!!!!!

Demon Summoning/Time Manipulation (Master Mind since this class can create the most lag, Demons since they are the most monsterous, and Time Manipulation since it will make enemies seem like they are lagging). And a costume so ugly, it's hard to look at.

I got several I wanted:

Steele Magnolia (my global)
Sword Dancer
Cornucopia
Garden of Eden
Total War
Fruity Pebbles
Simon Says
Brandywine

There's a longer story, and i'll post it in a second in the tech section, but suffice it to say that tonight, there's a new character name in town:

The Golden Calf

That's right, a golden cow-man. And he's a CEBR, so I'm gonna find out about this awesome brute thing. He's also got a bio. Explains his golden color, it's an electroplating thing to enhance his Energy attributes.

First thing. Right off. I am still, STILL amazed at how I get the names I want within 2 or 3 tries on any server, including Virture and Freedom.

So that's, uh.... 6. That's enough.

I failed to get "Technomancer", ended up making "Ari the Technomancer" since a three letter personal name was all that would fit.

I made:

Steel Sovereign

Timeshatter

Nanoswarm

The Will of the Storm

Mistress Arcana ("Lady Arcana" my first choice was taken)

Smash Girl

Winterwrath

Flame of Entropy

Taxibot Belle (taken by a poster that probably specifically targeted the owner)

I'm upset that the Ustream announcement the game was up was delayed by 15 minutes, as I probably could have got my name.
Hmm... Elizabeth Bathory was also taken

I managed to get all other versions of the name though. But that is my global... I really hope no-one would be childish enough to systematically take names from the most known forum posters just to grief.

Ahh. I didn't know that. I thought it wasn't, because when I did a /getglobalname for Razor on Liberty, a regular global name popped up.

Doing the same, however, on Exalted, shows that "Razor" is tied to @Razor, however, so ...

Ah well, you learn something new everyday.

I have an easier time imagining single-word iconic names splashed across a comics cover than other ones. You won't need to point out any examples of the latter, it's just a personal preference. Even on Virtue, almost all of my names were of the "single image-provoking noun" variety. I just had to bust out the thesaurus to find those nouns.

I found it interesting because the common conceit in "name wipe" threads is that there's no consensus on what's a good name. Since "good" is subjective, I'll agree there but I think there's evidence on what style of name is the most immediately popular. Not just in this thread but having sat around AP on launch day and spent time watching the swarm of gray spandexed men popping in and out.

Also, picked up Chicago Fire showing that there's exceptions to every rule

I have to agree. It's those one word names I picture written across the cover of a comic book. And of course there are exceptions
