One character to rule it all. What would you choose?
I'm a bit surprised to see no mention of a fire/rad, either the corr or troll variety. Once upon a time, before incarnates, I would imagine this would have been one of the first suggestions for farming (capable, if not the fastest), AV/GM soloing and solo TFing.
Global = Hedgefund (or some derivation thereof)
The correct answer is Fire/Cold corruptor.
Bots/Traps isn't a bad answer, but tell me, aren't there instances when MM pets just don't really work? MM is the only AT I've never spent significant time on because I find them exceptionally boring, so I can't say whether it's an AT flaw or just user flaw that I often witness. How are MMs during Lambda (pretty much all phases)? Last mission of Apex? Stuff like that where you're forced to play "fast and loose."
Because if there are scenarios where you can't bring your damage to the party, then it isn't a very well-rounded toon imo.

In Lambda, the hardest part is the sabotage phase. When I started playing iTrials with my Bots/Traps, I ran through mashing the defensive/follow button to keep my henchmen from aggroing until I stopped at a crate/container. Then I'd lay my Acid Mortar and let the bots kill the thing. They'd eventually start dying off, I'd resummon as I was able, but eventually hit my Demonic Aura to keep up with the melee guys and still lay my traps.
Now that I've got all three level shifts, I just go solo my own path through the Sabotage phase.
Last Mission of Apex is ... interesting. I have to micro the bots something fierce to keep them away from blue patches, but as long as I do that, I'm just as useful as I am anywhere else in the game.
Where to now?

I'd like to see a reasonably servicable build that can survive ITFs .. w/o outside buffs ... "on the cheap." I'm serious as I'd like to use mine for more than AE farms but I have trouble coming up with a reasonably cheap build that doesn't have to go for 45+ S/L def.

For 1-50 and solid endgame power, Fire/Rad Corruptor.
For fully IOd endgame performance, Ill/Cold Controller.
The Fire/Rad gets its main tools very early on and remains a great buffer/debuffer and damage dealer right the way to 50. Strong soloer, can solo AVs/GMs, great on teams and TFs.
The Ill/Cold is just...cheating. In so many ways. Breaks the game. So good.
Edit: or SS/FA, that's a good one too.
The Melee Teaming Guide for Melee Mans
If you were going to make one character and only one character to do everything you could possibly want to do in the game (Farm, SF/TF, missions, etc)
What archtype and powersets would you choose and why? I would go with an Elec armor tanker and then Kin Melee Why.. Elec armor is very tough verses normal content as you can high resistances verses s/l e and psi damage as well as moderate resists to Neg, Fire, and Ice. Much of the TF content hero side especially in the lower levels deals with s/l and e foes. Capping your energy resistance very early in your career is a huge boon of elec armor. Elec armor actually gets stronger in the later game... you'll laugh at malta sappers trying to drain you, be able to engage rularuu fairly easily, and carnies won't be much of a threat to you. Elec does have a hole to toxic damage.. but unlike other sets Elec armor can plug its own hole using its tier 9 power which will also end up capping all but psi resistances. It makes for a very powerful set overall and one of my favorites. Why Kin Melee... Kin does -damage which stacks nicely with the high resistances of elec armor. The combo goes as well together as Super Reflexes and Dark does. It also offers a nice mix of single target, aoe and ranged attacks and has a good damage boosting mechanic that I like better then build up, but not as much as rage. I just love the -damage aspect though and you really notice when you are focusing on a single target, and you have burst helping you with your aoe targets. Why a Tanker and not a Brute? I'm a turtle sort of player so I like the higher base resistances that tankers offers verses the damage potential that a brute offers. Teaming: I like Elec/Kin for teaming because no matter what sort of buffs and debuffs you add to elec armor it just gets better. The only thing you will have capped is elec resistance.. so you have room to be enhanced via a sonic or thermals... you have good end recover but its typically done via bursts of recovery and reduction of end costs rather then typically boosting the end recovery rate itself. +def and -acc powers are very useful and will greatly improve your durability. +recharge is nice for energize and powersink to bring them up faster. -damage stacks well with resistances and your kin melee effects. You are really good solo but get so much better teaming that its crazy good. Final thoughts: I really like my elec/kin and soon to be artic epic tanker so far and would highly recommend it if you were only going for a single character to play as its just a good all around character and tanks are just really fun to play. I'd say that elec armor is one of the best all around sets in the game and you won't go wrong with choosing it. |
from someone who ran a KM/Elec brute up to 50 (fixing my altitis in one fell swoop btw), i must admit to the great pairing of these two sets, though i personally prefer the brute, as the damage to res ratio is (i believe) more favorable for the brute. at least it played that way for me, but i don't crunch numbers in my hobbies, so i don't care if it ain't so. but i am not sure i would go with this pairing over my new SS/elec brute, apparently it's all that and a bag of chips, so say the masses. i know it's rougher on end usage thru level 34 then KM was, but not unmanageable.
Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.

One character... to do everything you could possibly want. That means, I need one character, to be LOTS of characters. The thing I like best in this game is character creation. So, I would need one character that could someone become all other characters, AND go back to Level 1 so that I could enjoy leveling it up.
For me the answer is a FM/SD/fire scrapper
The more people I meet, the more I'm beginning to root for the zombies.
Plant/Storm/Ice Controller.
You're a Titan @level 8 with Seeds of Confusion. You can now pull any PuG through the low level TFs pretty much by yourself. When you hit level 16 you get Freezing Rain and ascend to the ranks of godhood and it just keeps getting better from there. Later, you'll gain access to Tornado, Lighting Storm, Creepers and Audrey and everything is pretty much GG at that point.
When there is no room left in Hell, the Dead shall walk the earth.
The game as it currently stands-
My Elec/Elec/Mu brute is a beast with no PvP or purple sets.
OR
My extremely expensive FA/Elec/Pyre tank has duoed an ITF countless times; might could do it.
The game as it it will be in a month or so-
A Street Justice/Elec/Mu brute. I played one while StJ was available on beta and it was awesome. Just heaps of broken foes at your feet, and end is not a problem. The Negative damage from the Nictii in the ITF might be a bit of a problem, but pop a few oranges and all is well.
I'm starting to see more and more evidence that Warshades are the one archtype to rule them all.

Which is why i say that my SS/fire has bad end without cardiac. But really if i have fully saturated mobs for consume his end is amazing, and he can go with spirit. But you dont always have full mobs.

@Caucasiafro
For the slow-and-steady approach, there's not much that a prepared and well built Mastermind can't handle. That said, a lot of this game is about speed-this and speed-that, and the archetype really falls apart in a lot of ways when you're rushed and forced to ignore enemies.
For a character capable of doing pretty much whatever? Top end Brutes are pretty ridiculous. I'd personally probably pick a Dom or Controller over one though, but that's more because I like the ability to manipulate a battlefield more than SMASH.
That said, this is kind of a silly question to ask about this game. A lot of the fun for me is making and exploring new characters.

I24 Proc Chance = (Enhanced Recharge + Activation Time) * (Current PPM * 1.25) / 60*(1 + .75*(.15*Radius - 0.011*Radius*(360-Arc)/30)) Single Target Radius = 0. AoE Non-Cone Arc = 360.
I'd pick my plant/thorns dom. Because that's where it all started and, since maturing, there's nothing he has tried that he hasn't been able to do.
I'd probably pick my ill/rad... perma PA is hard to beat for just about anything that isn't hami and even on a hami she has lots to contribute.
Lost of soloability plus group friendly abilities.

I dont like warshades because of how low their lows are, personally. I for one like to judge a toon by how they will be some of the worst conditions.
Which is why i say that my SS/fire has bad end without cardiac. But really if i have fully saturated mobs for consume his end is amazing, and he can go with spirit. But you dont always have full mobs. |
I find it interesting that you go that route. I've yet to experience any true lows for the WS that I are really any different than any other character I've leveled, minus the vunerability to quantams which can be annoying.
@Draeth Darkstar
Why say it's a silly question when the way you choose to play or enjoy the game is purely subjective? Not only that, but a subjective view changes over time. I've already made so many character and played so many different combinations, but I have yet to build one character that is so thoroughly developed that they've done possibily everything that one character can do in the game.
Right now "A lot of fun" to me is finding one character that I can develop to such a level that there is very little (on the extreme or obviously not possible) that it can't do on it's own.
You're the first person I've seen that judges the performance of their character that way. Usually, it's top end performance people focus on, while others prefer to look at the average performance.

High end WSs' performance float way more than other ATs - you're dependent on other mobs for your godmode, your self heal/endurance, your mires, even your self-rez if you pick it. So when you're in a team fighting a single AV you are usually not contributing as much as in the middle of a big mob.
And well, subjectivity is important. Bots/Traps can be the 'i win' button, but is the toon enjoyable for you? I hate MMs so I'll never make one but they can basically do anything. Same for Ill/Colds (well not farming) but they also require more strategy than a SS/Fire brute.
I'd go with two toons: a SS/Fire Brute (for awesome damage, farming, melee fun) and if you wanna solo everything (like GMs) and also be more strategical in play style and like to contribute on teams on ways other than just damage, Ill/Cold (with perma-PA) or Bots/Traps. I know you asked for one, if I had to pick one only it'd be the bots/traps - although I'm not sure how well they farm I've seen they do everything else, but even if they farm very well they won't get close to Brute speed. Especially since it's so easy to self-PL a SS/Fire, claws/fire or claws/elec broot to get you the shinies, my SS/Fire hit 50 in two play sessions (like, 8-10 hours I think). And like Nihili said, he was doing well on TFs and teams and any other stuff with a cheap build. I didn't solo AV's with him since he farms so well on his current build and incarnate powers that I didn't bother, but it can be done, just look at Fiery-Enforcer's videos.
Yo archetype thread, I'm really happy for you and Imma let you finish, but Night Widows are the best AT of all time.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.
|
Actually Warshades' 'lows' are quite noticeable, since they have much in common with Dark Armor - they love being around mobs, WSs more than /DA. That's why they can do everything but solo GMs (maybe AVs, I'm not sure).

Human Form Warshades have the DPS to solo leevel 52 AV's without any pets whatsoever. Granted, that's with fully saturated mires, but even without them on a team VS. AV situation a Warshade can still contribute a pretty nice amount of damage. Human Form is also capable of very nice survivability via defense and HP bonuses; My build sits at 35% s/l defense, and 28%m/21%r/22%aoe. Its' HP is 1 below Brutes' base, and it caps eclipse for 85% resistance to all damage with just 5 targets. Anyways, just food for thought.
Even if one could, I'd probably still choose to play several alts over just one.
The game ends at 50. Smilegasm
Do not ever give Mind Control a pet. We need more control sets without pets.
My characters are not "toons". They are all project characters, though.
