I wish more people would do this. Not just because it improves the box office but because if you just watch a cam version then you really have no right to comment on how good the movie is. Or rather you do have a right but your opinion will be so uninformed as to make it pointless. Watching a cam version isn't like watching a dvd. You miss all sorts of visual and audio bits that might be important to the story.

This plus the fact that seeing something larger than life while in the company of fans can make a movie seem a lot better than it actually is. Which happens to be a good thing as well.

I won't weigh in on the movie myself until after I've seen it but I am looking forward to the experience.

I thought my ticket was money well spent. As ever, lots of easter eggs for the fanbois.

I didn't mind the montage part. At first I was put off by it but I grew to accept it as a way to show off "lots of stuff happened" without getting in the way of the overall plot.

On the down side, once you get towards the end you end up with just a big jumble montage of action sequences without much grounding in the film or context and I think that's to the film's detriment. It's just cool scenes of fighting (look everyone, a giant tank) until you get to a fight on a train where the plot starts in again. I get that it was just a montage meant to show the passage of time leading up to the climax and showing the accomplishments of Captain America, but it just didn't work for me in that regard. It really felt somewhat separated from the rest of the film somehow.

Still though, that was just a small section of the movie and hardly enough of a reason to dislike it. I do have to wonder though at all the people who got up and left just as the credits started to roll. Have none of them seen any of the other Marvel movies before? Heck, not only was there a short scene at the end of the credits this time, but there was an actual trailer for next summer's The Avengers after that was done.
When I saw Iron Man 2 in theatres, as the credits started I yelled out "Bonus scene after the credits!" a coupel of times, that got a few that were leaving to stick around and see the hammer of THOR in the ground.

Not in a dumb way, though. The characters were well acted, the actors gave them decent depth and feeling. Evans made a cap you could admire and empathize with, and the love interest had good chemistry. Side characters had good moments to stand out, making their existence more than just simple background/plot devices. (Wel, Bucky was a bit on the plot-devicey side) Weaving was an interesting villain, and made what could be a flat *insert evil laugh* "I am evil nazi!" into a believable individual. The tech looks both advanced and era correct in most cases, not something that is easy to pull off. The flow was such that the hours flew by, and left me wanting more.

Stay for after the credits, as per usual.
This is about my reaction exactly, right down the points on the fanciful technology.

Haven't seen it yet, but please elaborate on this. Was it the android Torch in a display tube, was it his tech specs diagrams or was he actually lit up?

I stil chuckle at times about how Marvel claims they have no Human Torch since the alleged death of Johnny Storm when only months prior they revived first Toro and then the original Torch for the big Invaders anniversary reunion.

****SPOILERS*****

So I agreed with everything you said in your post, but this part I particularly agreed with. I was really impressed with how they made everything look futuristic, but with the 50s aesthetic and idea of the future.

I liked this movie a lot, as did my GF who is slowly becoming a bigger comic book nerd.

Good plot, good pace, really thought they got the intro story of Captain America, who he is, why he was chosen, all of that was done very well. Chris Evans in his 4th comic book movie managed to do a character that was different than Jensen or Johnny Storm, and he was very good for the role I thought.

The action was good, but I felt, ironically enough, that for an action movie, some of the action scenes were a little rushed. But I was okay with that, I'm happy with them rushing the action to tell a little more story.

I also really liked the Captain America being used a propaganda machine bit, him on stage in tights for the shows, since that's part of the character's history, being a sort of propaganda comic in the early days. (And that's not a slam in anyway.)

the love interest was good, never seen Haley Atwell in a movie before but she was solid and gorgeous, very believable.

Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving are almost always good and they did very well here. I loved some of the nods to the rest of the Marvel Verse and Howard Stark had more of a presence in the movie than I would have guessed, I was happy to see it, and though I liked the character, I'm not sure the actor was right, he just seemed out of place in that role for some reason. (my GF said the same thing right after the movie before I had a chance to mention it.)

And then after the credits was a great bonus scene.... I was wondering what the bonus scene would be, how it'd tie off and lead into the upcoming Avengers movie, and they did it very.... very well... I'm so excited for the Avengers movie next summer, my theater already has a poster up for it....

Early viewing: Awesome.

First-time score reactions to the superhero flicks I've seen (1-10 scale, 5 mediocre, 10 all-time classic, 1 Uwe is on line 2):

Captain America 8.5
X-Men First Class 8.0
Thor 7.5
Green Lantern 5.5

Forgive me the .5s - I reserve the right to go up or down for a second viewing (but if you want me to give you a solid score right now - CA 9, Thor 8, GL 6).

Guy standing stock still in a display tube wearing a skintight red suit. No fire. Real Easter egg material, but it looked straight out of "Marvels".

Hm, wonder if they could pull off a WW2 themed movie with the Android Torch?

Granted modern fans would likely be confused in regards to Johnny Storm/FF, but it shouldn't take much to educate them on Jim Hammond's history as the Original Human Torch.

Just got back from seeing it. The last line Cap speaks before the credits roll hit me harder than I expected them to hit me.

Very solid flick - highly recommend it.

A respectable member of the Marvel Studios stable.

Not their best, but I thought it was just fine.
The Avengers trailer at the end doesn't show enough, but does wet the appetite. Next year can't get her soon enough.

Saw it and loved it. Not worth the 3D imo. But then at my theater it wasn't much of a choice.

Just got back from the 2D version. It was awesome.

I'm a huge Cap fan and was worried that the film might not live up to my expectations. Boy, it did that and then some!

It was at least as good as the first Iron Man movie. It was no Dark Knight Returns, but how many movies, superhero or not, are that good?

I highly recommend Captain America and do stay for the Avengers trailer after the credits!

Saw it last night. I was quite happy with it. It was probably the best superhero film of the summer (X Men First class is vying for the honor).

I saw it in 3D because of theater choice, and it was actually good quality 3D for once (much better than Thor).

Lots of good lines, and a good story. The end was quite poignant.

The Avengers trailer certainly has me wanting next May to come along sooner.

Too many alts to list.

Saw 2D and liked it a lot. Still second place of XM:FC to me, but enjoyable nonetheless. And yup, Avengers trailer is a mouth-watering tease for next summer. I was surprised at how well Chris Evans pulled off the role...wasn't sure I could wash the bad taste of FF out of my system. He did it though.

Not sure how I feel yet about the Spidey trailer yet. The POV shots were cool, but still seemed early phase in the special effects realm.

I just saw it and I felt this and Thor were by far the best comic movies to date. I wasn't impressed with XM:FC. And this from an X-Men fan.

This was greatness. Avengers can't happen soon enough for me.

I saw it yesterday and my current sentiment is that it is solidly 'good'. I think Thor may have been a bit better, but they're both well worth seeing. Seeing a teaser trailer for The Avengers after the credits was beyond awesome.

SPOILER: Favorite part: the flag pole scene.

Well done, just saw it with my wife and surprisingly there were a lot of elderly people in the theater, if that broad demographic holds up they're going to be quite happy with their box office.

I wish the Green Lantern was done as well, alas aside for Batman DC continues to get bludgeoned by Marvel at the Cinema.

Go See Capt.

Just got back from seeing it in 2d with hubby. I thought it was terrific, and yeah, the (1st) ending hit me a bit harder than I'd thought it would.

Thankfully I got my smarta** comment out of the way right off the bat...

"Wilkommen in Norwegen, Herr Anderson."

Hubby gave me a snarky look, people behind me quietly laughed.

Apparently, there's still a lot of 'em out there. The lady next to me turned to me as the credits rolled and said, "well, that was a ruined ending" or something like it. I replied that it was the setup for the next film, and you could see the lightbulb go on in her expression. Then she got up and left with half the theater as Rosie the Riveter appeared in the credits.

I'm not certain why, but nowadays we define our heroes by their flaws and inner turmoil. This was Cap in the era that defined most heroes by their courage and purity. "Goodie two shoes" and "Overgrown Boy Scout" would have been badges of honor to them. The next film might prove very different. In the comics, as I recall, Cap had some angst, struggling with being a man out of time, the loss of all he knew, which he associated as obsolete.

That has to be the most awesome thing I read today! Thank you for sharing! I'd wondered in the theater, despite the comic book elements, if the movie would make people think of our WW2 soldiers and their sacrifices. Apparently, it did.

I know the long, drawn-out moment to which you refer, and although no one left at my showing, we all were clearly uncertain what to do.

psst..40s, not 50s. That said, I think this film will qualify for dieselpunk status. I was very happy to see this.

Cap has been around for a really long time. I suspect a lot of those older people grew up reading his early comics, though many might have come hearing of a WW2-themed film.

Went and saw this with a former SG teammate who used to run a comic store. We both heartily approved. Two quirks to us, no real spoilers here:
1. Bucky seemed a lot older in the film. My teammate commented that he had hoped for younger.
2. The writing on Hydra equipment was an odd amalgamation of German and English. One word, for example, on the labeled controls of one of the Hydra planes: "autopilot". Is that really how 40s Germans would identify it?

Bit of spoilers here:

One wish I had was for clearer identification of Cap's Howling Commandos. Those whose identity I did hear were named at some pretty garbled moments. I'm pretty sure the Brit was Union Jack, based on some reading before the show, but I can't recall him being identified.

The ending...I'm guessing that was a homage to James Garner's 36 Hours movie. It sure felt like it for a moment.
