Bitter but still paying...

I don't understand it.

I have seen so many posts over the years from (often the same) bitter, unhappy, angst-ridden players.

Why would you continue to play a game you hate so much and/or that is so full of things you hate?

While many might think it's more a matter of the bitter posters actually loving the game and wanting it to improve, I cannot really believe that when some of them post that they want the game to fail.

The only logical conclusions I have been able to make are either they are sock-puppets for other games, just enjoy being upset or have no other outlet in RL where they think they are heard.

After some of the more recent tirades I have read, had I gotten that upset over a change in the game, I would have simply canceled and moved on to another game.

With that thought, I have seen posters try to somehow justify continuing to play a game they don't like from the perspective that this game sucks the least and is therefore their only choice, to which I can only say, "Huh?"

I don't see, logically, how playing a game you hate can be healthy for you either. One of the most well know exchanges of "Doctor, it hurts when I raise arm" "Then don't raise your arm" comes to mind.

Thoughts?

They like many parts of the game, and still enjoy those parts. They want to enjoy new parts though, and the new parts that are coming out aren't to their liking so they express that.

However, they still kind of enjoy the old parts, but that shouldn't be expected to keep them from criticizing what they dislike about the new parts.

Or perhaps more specifically for many people, they can't get a refund on whatever is remaining on their subscription so they might as well get what enjoyment they can out of it.

Long-term payment plans with forgotten auto-renewal days.

Although my long-term payment plan was actually done deliberately... about a month before 90% of my friends list left for good.

OK so maybe someone paid for more time than they ended up enjoying it.

That does not explain the posters I have seen for years and years posting the same rage-filled rants.

And, even if you have paid up for a while longer, why would you take the time then to come and post about hating the game rather than just go do something fun? (I do realize trolling is fun for some people.)

Like reiella said, just because there are parts you don't like, doesn't mean the totality isn't loved. In fact I'd say the fact they loved it is part of what provokes such emotion.

While I get that completely, IMO, a healthy rant now and then is not the same as a months or years long negative crusade..unless they feel REALLY bad about RL I guess...

I understand that and I tried to address it in the OP.

It still does not make sense to me for such a person to carry the level of hate and angst I am talking about for years at a time.

Not liking something, IMO, is way different than trying to get it destroyed, for instance, when a lot of players like it.

This and the small glimmer of hope that things will change for the better eventually. Every 2 to 3 years with this game something that really irks my nerves gets fixed so eventually at 10 years there might not be much left to fix is what I am hoping.

On the vet rewards issue another ncsoft title had the rewards too but that was not enough for me to stay subbed due to bad management of that game. If CoH was ever that bad I would have cancelled years ago. At least I feel like I can make a bit of impact on the message boards in terms of helping the game become better with our feedback. Other games are not like this.

Quite, although it leads to a really unfortunate situation with regards to Dev/player communications.

"Listen to their actions, not their words" I believe was the line that came out from another MMO's leaked internal memo. And there's also the situations where the 'community' seemingly despises the game publisher, yet they have been around since launch and are still paying ['Because nothing else is better' is usually the reasoning]. But it leads to a very hostile and bitter community.

I should note, I'm not really intending to blame the complainers. This is a truth that many developers know and realize, it just makes it difficult to 'come out' as it were when they get confronted with vitriol. I think it's just an unfortunate consequence of online communities.

Well, there have been a couple of likely-inadvertent hints posted by devs that unhappy postings and things said on these forums have led to changes in powers, ATs, and so on. People overstate cases because they feel that if they make it sound horrendous then what's only mildly annoying will become a priority.

Me, I just read the forums occasionally because often they're more entertaining than playing the same few characters through the same few missions and/or trials. I still have fun every now and then, but I hate messing around with the market and most of the characters that I want to play, I don't want to spend the time shopping for in order to play them.

And besides, until some more books come out I've already gone through my reading list for the summer.

I think you're trying to come up with one simple answer when there are likely many reasons for the posts you describe.

  • Some people truly want the game they love to improve and lash out bitterly to affect change
  • Some people quite likely are sock puppets; I thought there were several during the first competitor's launch
  • Some people are just big-ol' Debbie Downers and see the world through sad, gray-colored glasses; they're probably not "unhappy" with the game so much as they're just naturally negative
  • Some people are insane, so who knows why they do what they do
But unless you're referring to one person in particular, I think it's too complicated to generalize beyond "people like to ***** and moan." Any two complaint posts will likely have very different motivations.

Personally, I stuck with City of Heroes through the worst of the Incarnate crap mostly on because I once liked the game, and partially because City of Heroes has no meaningful competition, nor has it ever had any.

That said, in light of recent announcements and what is shaping up to be a pretty impressive launch for Freedom, I'm glad I did. It looks like things are about to improve significantly at least for the immediate aftermath of that launch, so that was well worth sticking around for. Just Titanic Weapons alone are probably worth the price of my subscription.

Must be why they're not coming out with animated hair.

In the year two thousand...

the developers will introduce animated hair. It will have one animation: it grows from a buzz cut to knee length and does not move aside from that. It resets to a buzz cut upon logging in. The issue will never again be addressed.

Oh boy, if we could only tell you how much we hate the games we're not playing.

But, you know, forum rules forbid us from doing that.

So the only one we can officially complain about here is CoH.

I haven't noticed that much hate towards the game. Some things within the game garner criticism and it gets heated but that quickly turns personal about the other posters. So really they don't hate the game, they hate you.

I need more self-control.

I need to be able to hit Back or close window before reading comments.

I really do.
