Gwendoline is way too hot to be Brienne, but according to Martin, she dressed the part for her audition and she totally pulled it off, so I'm willing to believe for now.

The Stannis and Melisandre castings look spot on as well.

The casting for this show may be some of the best casting yet. Just perfect picks almost nearly across the board. Dillane should make for a very good Stannis.

Yeah I read that too, Mental Giant. I think this pic has a "Brienne quality" to it. Is she prettier than you'd expect? Absolutely (see Tyrion) but there is enough plainess in there to capture the character. The real selling point is going to be her freakish height, which is really where a lot of Briennes insecurities come from much in the same way with Tyrion. Also remember Jaime notes she has beautiful eyes.

With the right makeup, they could make her look like a frog, so what she really looks like doesn't matter too much.

Stannis and Melisandre cast.

Another article with different pics which I think are more suitable for the characters.

I don't know much about her but I loved him as Jefferson in John Adams.

Brienne of Tarth cast. And she's 6'3"!

I really like this casting. If you look around for some pics of her I really think she can pull this off well. Like Tyrion, not "ugly" like the book suggests, but in the right hands it's a great role.
While I haven't gotten to book two yet, seeing Dillane get hired by HBO again makes sense. They love to keep actors around in their various series. Getting Mayor Carcetti from "The Wire" to play Littlefinger was brilliant.

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

Not saying that he can't pull it off, but Dillane looks a little too old for Stannis. I think he's suppose to be around 35 in the book, anyone know about the show since all of the characters ages have been changed?

I think for the show they pretty much bumped the ages up a bit overall. Also I always pictured Stannis as looking gaunt and haggard compared to Robert thus making him seem older even though he's younger.

First thought: way too pretty!

Actress: I didn't get the part!
Friend: Why not?
Actress: They said I was... too good looking! Waaah!
Friend: Yeah, boo hoo.

But I guess wonders can be worked with makeup. And yep, after seeing pictures of her towering over more 'normal' sized women, that's definitely going to help.

It's been a long time since I read A Clash of Kings - is that where Brienne is introduced? For some reason I was thinking it was later on...

She's introduced later in the book as one of Renly's Kingsguard.

SPOILERS BELOW

You've been warned!

One more time!

Catlyn goes to meet with Renly to try and form a truce with the North. It is there when the shadow kills Renly and Brienne is blamed and Catlyn takes her and they escape together.

I haven't been following this thread, mostly cause I just now watched the first couple of episodes. You know the one thing that stuck out in my mind the most?

Man, these people really like to do it doggie style.

Willpower has more passive regen than Regen does. Who thought that was a good idea?

Can we get a fix for Energy Melee instead of more new sets?

Not even slightly worried about her looking too pretty. Why? Charlize Theron in Monster.

HBO requires this by contract in all their series. (Seriously, I've noticed that about most of the HBO shows I've seen, and it's one of the reasons I'm so disdainful of them.)

Still need to watch the Game of Thrones show sometime, but I feel like taking a break after reading the equivalent of over 5,000 pages of the books over the past couple months. Speaking of "equivalent," this was the first book where I was glad I was toting around an e-reader rather than the physical books.

Come on now......a little hyperbole maybe? "Requires"??? Pffft! HBO does have more grown up content yes. Because they can and that's where people take content that requires those sensiblities. And truth be told there is more sex in the books than in the series. I personally appreciate more realistic depictions of life than the sanitized drivel produced by most broadcast network shows.

The series only gets more harsh as it progresses; I'm thinking of Lollys, I'm thinking of one whole PoV from DwD, and most of the Mereen stuff. A lot of this will have to be toned down for HBO.

Considering that Daenerys is only 13 when the first book starts, aging the characters was part of that toning down. There are things HBO can get away with, but probably not something like that.

"A Dance with Dragons" is already out, released on July 12. Or are you talking about a different book?

Released here, but maybe not yet released in the Fortress of Regrets?

Liam Cunningham was cast as Davos. Good choice I think.

One of things I love most about the show is the casting. A lot of the characters are really close to how I imagined them while reading the novels. As others have said, the child actors have done a brilliant job as well.

All I'm saying is that from a literary point of view that kind of minor deus ex machina can quickly lose its significance if it gets used every half-hour of the show.

Other than that I thought it was a great episode and looking forward to seeing more of this series.
Yeah you'll need to read the rest of the books to understand that interaction. The direwolves are -simply put- not regular animals. This is a mystical world you're reading within, so don't get fooled by the very gritty nature of the first two books (or the first season of Game of Thrones). The depth of content and world background expands every book.
