Yes I did! And I loved them and I didn't have to wait 6 years for the next installment. Finished book 4 about two weeks ago and decided not to start another book since the release was coming up so soon. Only problem: a weeks vacation for the 4th. Only plus: the house is much cleaner thanks to boredom.

Like others said, it's totally up to you to watch it or not. I'd say to at least watch the first episode to see if interests you.

Personally, I think the series is excellent. All of the characters are fleshed out really well and it makes you really feel for them and really hate some others.

What I really like is there are no good or bad people for the most part, it's all in the viewpoint of the different characters.

Watched the 10 episodes this week, and just ordered the first four books. Seems like it'll be weird reading the first book right after watching the season. I'm mainly hoping it'll help me get all the names straight this time through :P

I did the same, started reading the books when the show was almost over. It's a great read even with knowing what happens. Now I just picture the characters from the show in my head while reading.

That happened to me as well. I'm not sure exactly what I thought Jon Snow looked like before, but now I can't get Kit Harrington's image and voice out of my head during the Jon chapters. Not necessarily a bad thing, because I think Harrington nailed the character.

Finished ADwD the other day...going to go back now and re-read the whole series.

I can't wait to see how they're going to manage adapting the last 2 for TV...an ambitious undertaking, to say the least

I read the books years and years ago. It was always an awesome series. Awesome and gut-wrenching horrible.

The recent tv show inspired me to read them again, and I have to say... I found them much better on second reading. Maybe it's because I'm older. Maybe it's because I know the horrible things that are about to happen, making it easier to focus on the overall plot and not go "...omg" all the time. Maybe I'm just more accustomed to dark gritty fantasy these days (it was pretty uncharted land back in '96. At least in my neck of the woods).

But man it's good.

Got my Dance today. Yay. Gonna finish reading the new stories in the latest edition of the first Wild Cards book before I start on it. It's been five years since I visited Westeros. What's another evening or two?

Finished Dance today. I'm emotionally drained. A whole new set of cliffhangers to ponder.

Getting closer to the end of the first book. Great stuff despite knowing how things are going to end up.

My only complaint: characters seem to "fight back tears" or "hold back tears" an awful lot in this story. Seems like every other chapter. Kind of grating if I've picked up on it during a casual read.

Otherwise, it's very well written and the book is definitely adding to my enjoyment of the HBO series. HBO did make some changes that I thought were beneficial, like moving Tyrion's story of his "wife" to a later point. It made a bit more sense where HBO dropped it.

Also, one of the scenes I loved from the HBO version was the conversation between Robert and Cersei about their marriage. Great stuff, but not in the book because none of the "main" characters were there to witness it. It was also probably the least gratuitous of the added scenes.

I'm a little torn as to what to read when I finish reading this. Read the next 4 books, or that copy of "Cryptonomicon" I picked up.

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

A thousand times Cryptonomicron, one of the best books ever written.

The Robert/Cersei scene was great; it spoke volumes to the true nature of their relationship and was a great job by the actors.

For me I took a break between Books 2 and 3 and read something else. The remaining books tend to be a lot more "dense" than GoT. So it might not be a bad idea to mix something else in there that will hopefully avoid burnout.

I've just read the first 2 in a week and a half, so this is my plan now, at least so I can get to bed before 1:30 and get some sleep. I need a few weeks off (but will probably end up weakening as I pass a bookshop on my way home).

I started reading when I was about 7 episodes in and being able to visualize the characters saying the lines is a great help, especially when you're faced with so many of them.

I noticed this myself..the GoT characters have pretty much become the actors in my head while I was reading..but in the later books, I find myself getting some of the secondary characters that haven't been on the show yet (esp the ones Dany's dealing with) mixed up, partly because many have similar names, and partly because I don't have that clear image of them in my head....hmm..seems the adaptation's made me a bit of a lazy reader

Just finished book 4 last night, and now I'm in withdrawal. I've been reading the series exclusively (except for my weekly comix), and I didn't think to order book 5 until last night. So, four or five days until I can start the next book. I can do this. It'll be ok.

I certainly hope Martin doesn't take forever with book 6. I read the end note in book 4, and he says (paraphrasing), "I hope to have the next book out next year." That was in June 2005, and book 5 didn't come out for 6 years! He better pick up the pace on this one, or I might have to hunt Martin down and go all "Misery" on him.

I'm surprised that comment wasn't redacted from later printings. George has had cause to regret that remark for many years now.

While I do have Cryptonomicon sitting there, I haven't read a DiscWorld book in awhile, either...and I have many more to go on that series. Decisions...decisions...

I could have sworn the book 4 that I just read (paperback newer printing) was a modified message where he admits its taking longer than he thought. Will go back and look after work.

Semi related, he has addressed this quite a few times and while he feels for the fan he also points out that he has a lot on his plate even outside the world of Westeros along with getting the series on HBO and I think even a house renovation and that, well, it just is what it is. But I believe he has said that he doesn't expect another delay like this one. Let's face it money talks and with the success of GoT on TV he's sold a LOT more books on this one and demand for 6 will be a lot higher than it was with his original core fan base. Let's hope its motivation enough to see The Winds of Winter sooner than later.

I would hope that HBO's production schedule will get him cracking a bit faster on those last two books.

Season 2 Casting news: Semi spoilerish if you haven't read Book 2. Look at your own risk.

Stannis and Melisandre cast.

Another article with different pics which I think are more suitable for the characters.

I don't know much about her but I loved him as Jefferson in John Adams.

Brienne of Tarth cast. And she's 6'3"!

I really like this casting. If you look around for some pics of her I really think she can pull this off well. Like Tyrion, not "ugly" like the book suggests, but in the right hands it's a great role.
