Before I finished the first book, when I heard that Sean Bean would play Eddard, I knew he was gonna die. Next episode is the season finale. If **** just got real, it will become far realer next week.

So, does it appear that the end of the first season will coincide with the end of the first book?

According to a friend of mine who has read the books...yes.

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

The idea is to cover one novel per season, but Storm of Swords (the third novel) is so huge they might need two seasons for it.

Great episode all around!

OK. I ordered the collection of the first four books from Amazon for some summer reading , and I just want to make sure I don't spoil myself on future episodes/seasons.

I thought it was a fantastic episode, as usual. I was kind of surprised by Ned's fate. At dinner on Saturday night I had told I friend I didn't think they'd kill Ned since he seemed to be the main protagonist of the series. But as last night's episode went on, and Rob got his victory against Jamie Lannister, I realized Ned's fate was sealed. By the end I was just hoping he'd blurt out something about Joffery's true parentage, but oh well.

I wonder if anyone will be upset by the their method of skipping the giant, likely very expensive to film, battle scenes. I was a little disappointed, but I got over it quickly.

I'd like to suggest that we now officially change the title of this thread to "A Game of Owns" and offer a posting moratorium in the memory of our fallen comrade.

Knowing the moment would come hardly dulled the sadness therein. RIP. At least there was much ownage by the King in the North!

When you think about it, shouldn't you be thanking us for making mistakes? Veridian Dynamics. We're sorry. You're welcome.

I don't have a problem with their method of cutting costs as the story (of Book 1 at least) is less about what happens during battle and more about what happens before and after. I thought the editing was a bit odd regarding Tyrion because it kind of made it look like he was knocked out before the battle and woke up after it was all over. Yet Bronn mentioned him fighting when he came to. I don't think they were trying to make it out that he didn't fight, but one could argue they did by how it was edited. I'm also a little disappointed that they had him carrying a sword into battle and not the axe. (minor quibble)

(Minor future spoilers)

I'm now about a third of the way through book 3, my concerns is some of the future content is going to be very FX intensive and much bigger in scope battle wise. I really hope they work their way around without having to butcher the story, and still keep the excellent look and feel of the show.

Hopefully the rating and critical success of the first season will justify upping the F/X budget of the second. The second book isn't called A Clash Of Kings just for the alliteration.

Despite the money HBO laid out for season one, they're apparently making some serious bank off the foreign buys for this series due to the international interest. Having not read the books, I think we'll be okay.

And I was okay with skipping over the big battle scene. Such things are cool, but we've seen it before in countless movies...I like how they handled it, especially since THAT battle wasn't really the main focus of the story.

NOTE: I love how the credits sequence changes when new locations are being featured in the story. It's a really nice touch.

I continue to be amazed by the quality of the adaptation. Absolutely fantastic.

And I'm loving reading the reactions from viewers who hadn't read the books, on other forums. They don't seem to understand what their sudden passionate hatred of HBO actually says about the quality of the source material and viewing experience.

I'd thought the best thing about the HBO series would be that it got Martin to write the rest of the books. Turns out, I was wrong.

The best thing about the HBO series is, in fact, the HBO series.

Been reading the various recaps of the episode around the web...and it's amazing how many people (in comments sections...the recap writers all seem to grok it) are all "THEY KILLED NED!!! I"M NOT WATCHING ANYMORE!" I mean sure,as the shows been marketed, it'd seem like Ned's the main protagonist, and those types are never killed...you'd think people would be tired of the same old "rules" of entertainment by now.

I've been seeing the same thing. People are outraged. I tell them two things: 1) don't read the books and 2) don't get attached to anyone over four-and-a-half feet tall. Who isn't a Lannister.

strictly speaking as of book 4, the last part isn't true either.
A know a lot of people who seem suprised by Ned's death, of course they didn't read the books either, and didn't believe me when I told them don't get attached to anybody

See, I was under the impression he had gotten knocked out and missed the whole battle. All Bronn said when Tyrion woke up was, "You're a lousy warrior." (Cleaned up for a PG audience.)

I've not read the books, but I was pretty sure Ned was not making it out of this season. A friend of mine did tell me not to get too attached to anybody.

Still...it was shocking to see it unfold the way it did. We're seeing HBO do something very different and I'm excited by it.

If that was their intention, I'd say it is the first misstep in this version of the story. Tyrion leading them into battle is a major step in the characters story. All of his life he'd been seen as an abomination by his father and blamed for his mother's death. He feels ugly and weak and always gets by on his wits and his money. This was the time when he finally decides it's time to prove his worth to his father. Now mind you, his turn on the battlefield in the books is rather quick and he pretty much ends up in the same place as he does on the show, but not before he does take down one person. And while it might seem a tad nit picky, the act of actually fighting alongside his rogues gallery of fighters is central to Tyrion's growth and his future story. All it looked like on the show was "hey let's watch the funny little person get knocked over by the big people". And that goes quite opposite to what the Tyrion story is all about.

I do realize that there are always going to be changes; and I accept that. The show is still a great adaptation and in my opinion a success. This one thing, though, is a small disappointment.

I have read the books, I thought it was hilarious when I saw the trailer, saw he was playing Ned and saw what a big deal they made of his character. Nice move HBO...hire a well-known actor to play the "protagonist" of the show and promote it, knowing you won't have to pay a well-known actor's salary beyond the first season.

So are they playing the "who's gonna die next/who's gonna survive the series" guessing game yet, while you remain suspiciously quiet?

It would have been far more shocking had they not hired an actor who plays death-prone characters.

Yea, that was pretty close to my reaction as well to anyone who was genuinely surprised by what happened.
