Discussion: Upgrade to the NCsoft Launcher now!

Debt barely slows down levelling these days. It's just a little bar that measures how much Awesome you've generated recently. (If you're not getting debt, you're just not trying to generate Awesome hard enough.) -Kelenar
I work in customer service, so I can definitely understand being frustrated with customers from time to time. However, your snide comment is the kind of thing you say to yourself, or MAYBE blurt out in the heat of the moment. What you DON'T do is put it in writing for every other customer to see.

Pro Tip: New and Quick Start-up Desktop Icons
1. After your clients (Live, Test, and Beta) are set up, open the NCSoft Launcher. Click on File (top drop down menu) > In General Tab, click on "After launching game:" drop down > chose "Exit Launcher" > OK. 2. Right click on a client (e.g. CITY OF HEROES TEST) > on the pop up menu, chose "Create Desktop Shortcut" 3. Close the NCSoft Launcher. Find new Desktop Shortcut and double click it. The NCSoft Launcher will open briefly, start the client, then exit. From here on out, all you need is that one double-click to start the game. Pro Tip: Customizing Start-up Desktop Icons and Skins If you use several clients (Live, Test, and Beta), you may want to customize the Desktop Shortcuts and the start-up 'skin' so you get visual cues as to which client you're starting and which server you're entering. I use all three servers and clients. I gave the Live client the Hero icon and skin, the Test client the Villain icon and skin, and the Beta client the GR Gold icon and skin. 1. Open the NCSoft Launcher. For each client, right click and on the pop up menu, chose "Properties." 2. In the Properties window, you can add many of the old command line tags you use to with the shortcut to the old launcher. For the blue Hero skin, leave it blank or use -uiskin 0. For the red Villain skin, use -cov or -uiskin 1. For the gold GR skin, use -uiskin 2. Hit the OK button when done. 3. For each Desktop Shortcut Icon, you can customize which icon to show. Right click on the shortcut and in the pop up menu, chose Properties. In the main or shortcut tab, look for the "Change Icon" button and click it. If you get an error message or only one icon to chose from, click the Browse button and navigate to the cityofheroes.exe file in your main City of Heroes directory. You should now see a choice of five icons to use. Chose the one you want for each client's/server's shortcut. |
For now I can manually enter them in game for 2nd instance of game running.
Overall though with Zombie Man's breakdown, the transition was rather smooth.
2 Quick questions-
1) I have a shortcut set up to launch the game without the updater for the times when the old updater would break. Does anyone know if this will still work with this new launcher? |
2) Is the old CoH Launcher still usable? (I'd rather not install a new launcher and have it screw everything up potentially until AFTER the I20 sneak peek tonight!!!) |
(Oddly, my installation folder still contains a "CoVUpdater.exe"... which starts "CoHUpdater.exe"... which starts the NCSoft Launcher. Around and around we go...)

I uninstalled the game.
Uninstalled the launcher.
Installed the launcher.
Installed the game using the launcher.
When I run the game, it launches... the old CoX updater.
I can play again. No Wisp aura. Despite everything being done by the launcher.

So... why are you making us use this crap? I used it when Tabula Rasa came out, as it was the only way to access the game. I lost count of how many "errors" I had from this POS launcher that kept me from getting into the game. Not only that, but I find that every patch is slower through the NCSoft Launcher than the CoH Updater for Live, Test, and Beta.
WHY for the love of God are you making us switch?!
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand basket?

Excellent information as always, got the game running pretty well but would you or anyone happen to know if there are any Command Lines for /maxfps 25 and /maxinactivefps 10 via a desktop shortcut?

Think this should explain it well...

Also, I wanted to say good luck to those of you who are having problems. I hope that you get it working soon and can get back to kicking butt in-game.

Thanks I did find that but the problem I'm coming up with is I launch the game normally once, and then a second time with only the 2nd instance running those command lines. 1st instance running game normally. That section applies command line to all Live versions open. For now it works fine if I type the commands in game so that'll have to do.
|
Anyway, I'd rather just have it all on all the time instead of having to type it in every time I start the game.

See, I just always run with the maxinactivefps 5. I figure, if I alt-tab out of CoH I don't want CoH hogging my graphics while I surf the web. The maxinactive setting doesn't affect your play at all, so there's no reason to not use it all the time. The maxfps setting isn't like that though since it throttles your maximum fps, as the name implies(duh). If I run two instances, I tend to put maxfps 25 on both though anyway, since I've had the second instance black out on me a few times when I didn't. My fps never actually even gets higher than 25 anyway though...
Anyway, I'd rather just have it all on all the time instead of having to type it in every time I start the game. |
Good thinking
I'll give that a try, thanks again.
Does anyone know how to "help" the new launcher find a beta or test install that it missed? I don't see a way of manually adding an install to its list.
Thanks for any help.

Second, the whole site "http://launcher.ncsoft.com/" doesn't seem to respond from my IP. And apparently (from what others say), from any IP in South America.
Chrome's error: "Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): The server could not be found."
I can easily download this by switching to a VPN in North America, but that beats the purpose of the fix. Please make the "launcher.ncsoft.com" server work for us. Thanks.

I'm guessing not.
At least try the thing now (updated for CoH) before you complain, ok?

I will start this post by saying that I have downloaded the new installer and although I am not a big fan of the looks of it I can run the CoX from a desktop shortcut. Other than that the installation went without a hitch (x64 Win7).
However, I do have a question. Is it necessary to grant Full Control rights for the Everyone group to the Launcher and CoX game folders? My machine runs with multiple accounts and has the other accounts nicely locked down. Granting this right not only gives a chance for untoward things to happen from other accounts but increases the overall threat footprint of the machine.
Can someone confirm the minimum security rights that are required for the launcher and game to work correctly as surely it can't be Full Control for Everyone.
