... NC (or at least our devs) have to smile at Yahtzee's new "other MMO" review. Just for him pointing out, when talking about character creation, that "City of Heroes did it better."

(Now, yes, most of it is his standard trashing of the game, but having the COH reference in there - /thumbsup.)

yep, just watched it a few seconds ago, and the brief but appreciative mention is nice.

That wasn't the only thing though, it also implied that
1) CoH is the definitive superhero MMO to be compared to, and
2) CoH succeeds despite that WOW eating up every other MMO, and
3) Since it talk about the comparison between CoH and DCUO, then says that DCUO trips over, it implies that CoH is better, period.

Yeah. I agree with him, this time. And I think the Devs should be quite happy with him comparing it to CityOf and saying it fails in comparison

I think pop culture icons can be as big a turn-off as a come-on for an MMO - especially for something like a comic book game.

Yep, I'd say that was quite an accurate review.

A quite...*AHEM!* blunt review!

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Yeah. When Yahtzee has trouble finding something to complain about in a game, it's for a reason - I think it's happened, what, once? Twice? (Portal and maybe Bioshock, apart from light criticism of indie games?)

Of course it is. There were none before it, and those that have come since launch have come up short.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Being able to team up with an icon has an appeal... until you realize that everyone else can and does too. Nothing shoots down the awesome rating faster than turning into the village bicycle.

Always being locked into a role of a background character to the "real" heroes is also a turn-off. We've had our share of complaints back in the day about game lore and basically coming off as Freedom Phalanx' second-stringers.

And this is where Villains win. We get to not only beat up Recluse's lackeys, Recluse himself, but we also get to kick the everloving crap out of all the big name Heroes too!
Triumph; it tastes of win

Sounds all good, untill you realize MOST of the time, it isn't YOU beating up Recluse's lackeys, Recluse himself, or the big name Heroes.

It's you and a team of others doing it.

So it's not so much, "Ha! I'm strong!" as it is "Ha! You can't take us on 8 to 1!" ;p

We were talking about icons in the Other Thing, not CoH, which doesn't suffer from the same problem

Kind of depends on wether or not the Pop culture Icons are the only appeal of the game.

It seems like some of these MMOs are designed with the philosophy of, "Ohh people love this property so much, it sells itself! So let's cut the dame design budget and give it to our investors since the Logo on the box will sell it."

That's just kind of my opinion in general of some of these MMOs, including the one with the big well known sci fi name attached to it, that's gotten very poor reviews.

Well, at the level of lackeys, we more fight on the order of 1 to 3 (or more). It's only when you get up into the higher ranks like Recluse's lieutenants that the ratio shifts in the other direction.

That was utterly brilliant. I like Fire Blast being described as 'punching things with fire, but missing'.

Yeah, he got Dirigible Corporation's number first up.
