If they didn't want the heat, then maybe they should have kept their mouths closed.
Except that, of course, the official announcement was: We're aiming for the 16th ... ish. If we don't make that it'll be the week after thanksgiving.

Afaik, we're still not past the week after thanksgiving, so no matter how you want to twist it they still haven't broken any promises.

But I'm fairly sure that they won't bother to give anymore actual dates from now on. It'll be back to "Soon". Yey, you win.

In itself missing this deadline wasn't really a bad thing and I am not really upset over it, but from the little bit of research I have done it is not exactly a solitary mistake. Even if you subtract out the few things they managed to get to us early, it still makes for a bad image in being "tardy".

Fact is though, we ARE much more forgiving with NCSoft/Paragon Studios when they mess up than they would be with us if we messed up our finances and we couldn't pay the sub fee on time. For this reason I don't have a problem when Mr. Cyber_naut or Mr. GMan3 (and a few others) make a complaint on this companies performance. Maybe if we all were a little more critical they would start to perform better since they might learn we are "tired of mediocrity".

I hope I managed to say what I meant pretty clearly here. I am not usually very good at that according to my Writing Composition teacher anyways.
Except that, of course, I don't see any 'mediocrity'. In terms of meeting deadlines Paragon Studios isn't any better or worse then just about any other game developing studio.

I'm sure the devs are well aware of the implications of delays from a customer relations perspective, (might even cost them dev dollars internally when a project gets extended), so if they stop a release because of a "show-stopping" bug then i agree we should be relieved that didn't go live.

Though it's understandable some would complain. It's like my cable tv service. It doesn't matter how many hardworking people are out there maintaining the wire, relay stations and programming uplinks...doesn't even matter it's been up for months, if it goes down for a short time when i'm expecting something fun to watch, i end up complaining too.

But the part about only being entitled to server access is not completely accurate. The subscription entitles people access to the game service which resides on server hardware but includes all content that service provides short of the paid extras.

If the devs thought that people will be satisfied with just server access they wouldn't keep incurring further development costs and would've just stopped at the original CoH box content.

While I agree with your sentiment, we *are* entitled to periodic free updates that freshen things up for longtime players.

That said, we aren't entitled to have them on our schedule, but rather on the devs schedule.

The kerfuffle this time around nicely illustrates why they very, very rarely mention a specific date for this or that feature. However carefully they modify the statement a few people will FREAK THE #$%*@ OUT about their lying, cheating, lowdown ways if something gets delayed.

I'm just wondering why they promised something before Thanksgiving anyway. The past three years they've decided not to risk a new issue right before the long holiday... why did they decide this would be different in the first place?

They didn't promise anything.
And they thought they might be able to get it done before then (because they wanted to get it done before then).

There hasn't even been a delay... Since all they said was that they were hoping for the week before Thanksgiving, but, if it wasn't ready by then, it would come afterward.
Their hopes were dashed by some bugs that they obviously couldn't overcome quickly enough.
We'll just have to wait and see if they can overcome it before things truly have to be delayed.

I suppose, if it was smooth enough to send live, they felt like they'd have those couple of days before the holiday, in case anything needed to be fixed on live.

No idea.
I thought it was strange when they announced it.

But...but...I heard the dev's all sneeze sparkles and fart cotton candy!

On a more serious note, I agree with ya, the job is by no stretch of the imagination easy. I used to work as a writer/designer for another game, and my job was difficult...but it was nothing compared to the people who had to put my designs into code which would in turn become the game someone could play.

You're right as well, they will keep giving us free updates, because like everyone else, they like money and they seem to love their job at least

Actually, they didn't promise anything - they only said they were shooting for November 16th-ish - but if that didn't work out, it'd come out after Thanksgiving.

I think the devs are doing great and you all need to get off their backs. That being said, I am glad it isn't right before Thanksgiving, I might even go so far as saying I am thankful it isn't out before. You see, I have family I would like to have a nice dinner with, and I don't intend to sit at my desk eating turkey and cranberry sauce.

However if it was released, that is very likely the result, as I've been hooked on this game from day one. I haven't always had the money to play, and I haven't always had the money for the packs, but I have sent as many people this way as I could, and end up with more people to play this wonderful game with.

Thanks for the update, it always warms my heart to know that you guys care about us players, and feel like keeping us in the loop whenever possible. I can't wait for i19, but alas, it seems I will have to. See you in game soon!

Releasing on the 16th was quite explicitly stated as a goal that they hoped to reach, but knew might not happen, and if it couldn't be released on the 16th it would be released after the US Thanksgiving holiday. There was never a promise made at the actual M&G in the world outside some posters' heads, but they've insisted there was a promise because they see it as support for their position that the Devs can do no right.

For those of you who couldn't make it to the meet and greet.....load this and go to approx 2 minutes 14 seconds and you can see the "promise" that everyone is freaking out about.

Kinda like your buddy telling you he'll meet you at six but then he calls you to show that he'll be an hour late because he's stuck in a traffic jam.

Then you proceed to tell him how bad a friend he is because he always breaks his promises.

It sucks a lot that we won't see I19 for another week but let's be real here, it's not like the devs include show-stopper bugs in their game on purpose.

Not really. The Devs didn't call back later, they said at the start that they'd like the 16th, but weren't sure they could do it. Well, technically they did call to confirm it would be the later time, but still....

It's more like your buddy calling to say that he's going to try to catch the 4:14 train to meet you at 6, but if he can't get there in time he'll have to catch the next train in about two hours.

Then he calls at 4:35 to tell you that he got hung up at the ticket window and he won't make until about 8 or so and you start screaming at him that he sucks and he's the worst friend ever and anyway he swore on his mother's grave he'd be there at 6 sharpish and his word is worthless and he sucks anyway and even though it's really tasty his cheesecake is doomed to fail because he doesn't sell as much of it from his little shop as the major brand name sold in the supermarket down the road and as you're degenerating into gibbering incoherency your phone cuts out because the spittle from screaming at the phone soaked into the case and shorted something out.
Yeah, it's a little more like the latter.

LOL, nobody is claiming the 'devs can do no right', the fact everyone posting here is playing their game shows that we all enjoy what they produce.

The complaints are coming due to the fact they are consistently late in releasing new content. Again, some of the stuff we are still waiting for was supposed to be released with GR. You can play games with semantics all you want, but a lot of us are aggrivated with being strung along waiting for the incarnate content. If you're not, that's great, but acting like there is no reason at all for some of us to feel the way we do is ridiculous. It's a valid argument that they've missed a lot of release dates recently, and most customers don't like it when the person they are doing business with is consistently late with providing products or services.

The problem is...
The whole delay of the Alpha Slot has been played out in other threads and still has legitimate places to post about it.
This I19 update is simply about the fact that some showstoppers prevented the early estimate of I19's arrival.
Yet, people drag up the Alpha Slot, Incarnate delays as some vast offense from the Devs and include this delay as yet another failure...
It's not semantics... it is stupidity.

What are these multitudes of delays and failure to meet release dates that you speak of?

If you don't realize it's not completely serious at that level of absurdity then adding more really isn't going to help. i mean it's like if you ordered fish and chips and instead the waitress delivered a live basking shark and a truckload of whole potatoes to your table. At that point you have to go get the jugs of cooking oil, set up the deep fryers, bribe the local fire department, depose the prime minister, start fermenting the vinegar, hire a staff of Lithuanian fry cooks... it just becomes a much bigger production than you wanted simply to get an order of fish and chips.

Don't worry, you'll eventually encounter some of the posts by people like Championess who do in fact insist that the current Dev team is doing nearly everything wrong.

point of order:

as the people who set the agenda and given their historic reluctance to specify dates they can't really be 'late'.

can they produce content at a rate you personally find unimpressive?
yes.

does that make it 'late'?
no.

Yep, you're absolutely right; they SHOULD stop giving us release dates.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4pSRUFKtcg#t=2m14s is at the spot.

FYI - for youtube, adding "#t=0m0s" - replacing the 0s with the minutes (m) and seconds (s) respectively - lets you make a video load after the default start point. (for the above, i just added "#t=2m14s" to get the right spot.)

Thanks! Never really messed with that before, will remember it for later.
