A god with a gun
one poster put it pretty well, anyone can pick up a wrench, not everyone can use it to smash recluse's head in, there is always a kind of meta-super aspect to our characters, really being able to kick or punch hard enough to smash a submarine, or to affect seemingly incorporeal entities is just as silly from the outside(more so, really), but for characters with the appended "super" power, its possible. there are examples from film, books and games where characters can do entirely unreal things with swords and firearms, just go with that.
Our origins mean nothing in relation to the incarnate abilities.
My main will remain the magic devil that he is, but he'll be that plus having a channel to the Well of the Furies after unlocking the alpha slot.
A normal with a gun will still be a normal with a gun, but he'll be that plus having a channel to the Well of the Furies after unlocking the alpha slot.
Our origins don't change when we slot inventions, why should they change when we slot incarnate abilities?
Be well, people of CoH.
The short answer is "however you want it to". You, of course, have the option of completely ignoring the Well of Furies fluff and making your own explanation for how your character is getting stronger but even within the bounds of the fluff there are plenty of explanations.
The simple version is that the character's skill with his weapon becomes better. A sword user might find that he is getting faster and stronger than he was before or is able to swing his sword for longer before tiring. A gun wielder might find that his sight improves and he is able to place his shots with more precision.
Or maybe the character finds himself able to use the power of the gods to imbue his weapon. His sword is now preternaturally sharp and never needs sharpening. The bullets he fires from his gun glow with a mystic energy and seem to penetrate armor more effectively.
Or maybe the Well does not directly increase the character's combat ability at all but instead grants him knowledge which he can use to increase his potency. While he sleeps the Sword user dreams of a small cave in the woods near Paragon City, when he wakes up he seeks it out and after passing many trials is granted a sword that is a relic of ages past when the Gods walked the earth and fought alongside humans. The gun user doesn't notice anything different but whenever he works on his gear things seem... clearer than they were before and he is able to make upgrades to his gear that he would never have thought possible.
I understand the game mechanics of it.
I just find the idea of a man with the gun of a god intriguing.
On top of that, a character that is a robot/android, developing these godlike powers is also intriguing.
I am in no way complaining about a single thing. I love the idea(being able the par with the most powerful of this world). I'm just inquiring on other's ideas of how characteristically and personal-lore-wize, the coming advancements will be with those of the Punisher/Dare Devil/Batman/Question level of power.
As a side note, I do find interesting how the "normals" can affect, and even "kill" ghosts. Perhaps they make themselves solid enough to affect the material world long enough to do either good or harm, and when they feel in danger they go FULL ghost and flea for a while(one thing I hate about the CoT, but it is good for reprive till you heal, at least a little).
Again, no complaints, just fascination about RP and lore possibilities.
I guess it gives you as many options as you can think of plus a few more...
it could be that the "guy with the gun" is a dead shot but the gun is just a gun... and the incarnate somehow empowers the bullet... so a "normal" hero's weapon might be be stopped by body armour but the incarnate's weapon is guided by his force of will and shatters the armour
it's an interesting question though.
Thelonious Monk
i'd post a video example of a super powered gun wielder from an anime called 'darker than black' [2], unfortunately i can't seem to find any short and clear enough to characterize the idea well.
essentially, the character has an internal 'well' providing a large browning .50 snipe rifle. not all that far off from the 'where did i put that [take it from]' when shouldering the assault rifle, etc.

Kittens give Morbo gas.
Didn't Punisher become an Agent of God and expanded his target list to demons as well? I didn't read it, but I think I heard something like that happened.
That's pretty much a gun user with the powers of a god. I haven't heard if it was a good story, though.

but if you are simply a man(or woman)with a gun or sword(however technologically advanced), how would that work? |
Players who want to believe they're playing a "regular person" need to be tolerant of (or ignore) many things that frequently spoil that notion.
On that note, one should be able to accept the Incarnate System as an additional source of power without much fuss about it upsetting their origin.
I was thinking about the Incarnate system, and found this idea intriguing.
How does a "normal" with a gun or a sword(replace "sword" with any melee weapon, "gun" is universal as it pertains to firearms)handle growing godlike powers? A man using barehands and feet, or utilizing any element, I'd understand(for the bare-handed godlikes, see the Dragonball saga), but if you are simply a man(or woman)with a gun or sword(however technologically advanced), how would that work? |
Of course, for him, the quality of the sword does not matter. He can cut a tank in half with a plastic sword. Ironic, since he currently hold a sentient katana of considerable power.
By this logic, the Silver Samurai would just be a man with a sword.

Also(from wiki):
Silver Samurai, the illegitimate son of Shingen Yashida, is a Japanese mutant with the power to charge almost anything, most notably his katana, with mutant energy (described as a tachyon field) which enables it to slice through any known substance excluding adamantium. He also sports a suit based on traditional samurai armor. It is made of a silver metal, hence his name. |
I meant people as normal as you(possibly, I don't know)or me. No mutant powers, no advanced cybernetics, no magical spells, no scientific advantages. Just normal, plain, ordinary people.
You would become a modern version of various mere mortals that have done astounding things with just skill, muscle and limitless will. Mythology is full of them.

Why MA ratings should be changed from stars to "like" or "dislike"
A better algorithm for ordering MA arcs
Just watch movies like Iron Monkey or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, etc.
Some naturals do what normal people can do and others do astounding (impossible) things. The natural has simply now tapped into a source of power that enables him/her to do the most incredible things.
total kick to the gut
This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
Wasn't here when they were being released, but it'll be just like patron powers. People will RP it out to be something else.
Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.
the term "god" has become kind of degraded in popular culture to mean some fairly unimpressive powers, so i kind of avoid using that in relation to incarnates (leaving out its emotionally charged nature as well) my conception of the incarnate power goes mroe along with the imvestment of incredible primal power, kind of like the silver surfer's power cosmic, that is how i see incarnates, the "power cosmic", it seems to work out in general comic book power level, and it avoids any unpleasent side digressions. For good examples of characters making guns do nutty stuff, various anime (trigun, outlaw star and hellsing come directly to mind) may help you concieve a cosmicly powered gunman, also the matrix and equilibrium.
(it also resolves any conflicts because a number of my characters are directly in the employ of specific divine entities).

A regular guy getting a shot of magic? He becomes magic, period.
Therefore, some of my characters will have to completely ignore Incarnate stuff, just as they ignore the Origin of Power stuff, the Power Proliferation nonsense and the backstories behind the Patron Power Pools of CoV.
