3+ Year Veterans: Why do you stay?
72 months for me, I just love the game. The costume creator is a creative outlet for me, and the game play is relaxing, or challenging depending on what I want. The great community helps also.

I'll hit 75 months at the end of this month. I did take the majority of the last year off (but kept the sub active - do I still qualify?). For me its a little bit of everything. Game play is still enjoyable (combat system, travel powers), content/missions have only gotten better, new systems have been great (IO's, market, AE). Something else that I never fully appreciated until I spent the last year in another game is the costume creator. Abstractly I knew its was the best out there, but since returning with all the additions, its mind boggling what you can do with your character.
I've made some good friends here as well, having joined my SG over five years ago. We even branched out and all play the other game once a week. I really enjoying hanging out with the group, even if its just BS'ing in chat while we all run different stuff on our own.
75 months here. part of it is inertia, quitting after this long would feel abrupt, at this point i'm seeing it through till the end.
part of it is friends, a good friend plays it, so does a distant friend, soon will a family member, so part of it is the social connections
finally, is the coh secret weapon, i made rian frostdrake, he is my favorite comic book character, while some issues may follow other character when i alt, rian exists outside of the game as well, when im bored at work and am running a story in my head, he is as present as batman or superman, more-so because of how the character exists kind of wrapped around my conceptions of a hero. but the only place i can read his comics is here. the costume creator is not to be underestimated, no other game did that, and i have played a lot. not even his crossover character in a different comic banner. and that one can even run on all fours.
Honestly, I still like to play the game. That's it, that's all.
Definitely the Community. I'm a 54-month Vet, going on 57-month - and I'd likely be a lot higher than that if it hadn't been for those months I wasn't able to subscribe.
And it still amazes me. It's rare enough for me to stick with any MMO beyond a month or two - but CoX has always had me coming back. I know that I can log in at almost any time of day, find a team of folk I've never met before, and have a good time. Maybe even make some friends out of it!
But even more than that... Customization. Customization has always been the first thing I look for in an MMO. I make a hobby of designing characters and thinking up personalities and/or stories for them. I don't write these out, or Roleplay... but watching these things in action is one of the most enjoyable experiences for me. Only one MMO I've played beat CoX in this area - but the Community point over there made CoX the clear winner.
I still take breaks every few months, and I have my eye on one or two upcoming MMOs - as I always do. I'm always hoping for that one that will do CoX one better. Even when it does - you know I'll still be here on the side, 'till the day the servers go down and Paragon Studios launches CoX2.

So, Veterans, why do you effectively buy this game again and again?

I enjoy the freedom of expression provided by the game, from making costumes to selecting powersets and powers.
I like poking around under the hood to find ways to make specific concepts work the way I want them to work.
It's a slightly different experience every time I play it with different powers or powersets, or on teams, so it's a slightly different game each time I play.
It satisfies me, in some way, for some reason.
Where would I go?
A couple reasons.
Customizability: I can make create character. Honest to goodness, fully fleshed out characters that have a story of their own, and their own gameplay to back it up. Everysingle one of them is different, and can be made to look unique.
Crazy stuff you can do: a tanker in a mech suit that can withstand an army. A dominator that can cause helplessness in a crowd of elite bosses in seconds. A blaster that can fire from further than she can see. A brute that can take a beating, the fil his life in an instant. If that doesn't work, he can bring himself back from the dead. A defender that can turn a giant monster that can squish even tanks into an ineffectual heap incapable of attack. Fun stuff.
Variety: though the enemies are pretty shallow at times, the powers system is not, and allows you to go through the same stuff hundreds of different ways. Heck, even within the same archetype.
Good times with people: with friends, goofing off as you trounce foes, or meeting new people, heading into a mission, and finding our own strategies. The game offes a lot of varied was of doing things with other players.
Progress: there are allways new things you can do with your characters.
1. The Community
2. The Customization (How many times have I felt like 'GenericSuperhero/Supervillain 3854?' The correct answer is ZERO!)
to TO THE END!
Villains are those who dedicate their lives to causing mayhem. Villians are people from the planet Villia!
I just passed 75 months; while I obviously keep my account active, truth be told I hardly play the game. Maybe an hour a week; sometimes weeks go by without me so much as loading the game. And it's been that way for probably close to three years. So why do I stay?
1) Wishful thinking. I enjoyed the game so passionately for the first few years, I keep hoping something will rekindle that excitment. I have high hopes for every new issue that comes along, but they never quite hold my interest very long.
2) Attachment to my characters. After 6 years, it's not easy to walk away from them.
3) And, when all is said and done, $15 a month is pretty insignifcant to me. No matter how little I play, the thought of cancelling never really crosses my mind.

I'll hit 60 months in December. I stay for the fun and my friends. There is always something new to enjoy and the promise of something new on the horizon. Issue 18 was barely out and I was already panting to have them release 19.
I think one of the biggest things that has kept me here is the fact that they listen to US and give us what we ask for (okay so there are some that would disagree.. PvPers, AE farmers, etc). But with Issue 19 due out soon once again we are getting something that has been bouncing around these forums for a LONG time .. Stamina at level 2 and without wasting a power selection. The other improvements that are a direct result of players comments include Power customization, Revamping the Positron Task Force, and a host of costume and power changes so long I am not even going to TRY to list them all here.
With almost 5 years in I still haven't created and played every single power set for every AT and they keep adding more. So while it may be the "same" game it certainly is not the same game I bought and loaded on my aging, and long gone computer, back in December of 2005. As long as they comtinue to let the game evolve I see no reason not to stick around and keep having fun with all the friends I have made here. :-D

Anyway, I've lost count on how many vet badges I've accrued. Oh wait, it's in my sig!
So yeah the community for this game is pretty damn awesome. This was my first MMO & I've played at least a dozen others since the CoH beta & the community here trumps them all. I just wish I could say I actually play with them in the game but I rarely do. Ever since all of my in-game buddies left for other pastures 2+ years ago, I pretty much play this game like a single player RPG with the very occasional pugging when the mood strikes.
But you know what? I still love the game & will be here when they shut the lights off. Besides, I am subbed to some great global channels (hello Pinnbadges) so I'm never really alone even when soloing.
Oh & who wants to be a midget or fairy in some fantasy MMO that can barely handle 3 enemies at once when you can be a super-powered badass taking on 20 foes at a time? NOT ME BROTHER!
EDIT: Hey whaddya know, after 6+ years I've finally hit my 100th post!
The ancient texts were wrong though. They foretold that I would use the word "pee" somewhere in my 100th post & it looks like they didn....
wait a second....
I DID IT! The prophecies were true! I AM THE CHOSEN ONE!!!

45 months here, and for me, it's the gameplay. I have always enjoyed the classic beat-em-up type of games, Final Fight and the like. In a lot of ways, City carries the spirit of that genre, especially for the melee ATs: walk forward and sock everything that gets in your way
Sometimes I just want simple mindless combat, I'm not exactly a fan of the combos and quick-time events and other junk that have been added to games like God of War in recent years. Add in teaming with lots of great players and extensive customization, and yeah, I'll probably be punching thugs like it's 1989 until the game shuts down.
For me it's plain and simple. I just frickin love the game!

Prometheus: ... so what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
Me: From a certain point of view?
Prometheus: You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on your point of view.
Me: You're right about that. Power Blast is very pretty from a certain point of view. But that point of view is not head-on. <Kaboom> - Arcanaville.
