Walking Dead on AMC
To be fair, he did hear that there was a refugee camp with good protection in the city, but still:
1.) Big city, lots of people, ergo, lots of walkers 2.) The highway was another clue 3.) No radio contact heading into the city Avoiding the city is a no-brainer. This is a promising start. |
One thing I loved was his reaction when he was under the tank and about to shoot himself and suddenly realized the belly hatch was open. That split second right there is a brilliant piece of acting.

BRILLIANT start!!!!! I was really impressed how faithful the show is to the graphic novel while still taking enough liberties to be original. The gore was there when is NEEDED to be, nowhere else- and that right there tells me the producers got the show nailed exactly. The comic has always been about the people, not the zombies. Rick's breakdown in his empty house, Dwayne's inability to kill his dead wife, even Shane's attempt at control/command of the group while showing how ragged he is- all pefectly lifted from the story and beautfully executed.
I was VERY happy they didn't really change any of the "bicycle zombie" scene. (only a minor chage which actually made the scene better) It is the pivotal scene in issue 1 and really sets the tone for the book.
BTW- I THINK it's inferred later on in the series (need to doublecheck) that Shane told Laurie that Rick had perished when the hospital fell- thats why they left him. You are left to decide Shane's motive on this but the rest of his actions make it crystal clear why.
"Well, there's going to be some light music and a short note of apology saying, 'The universe ended last week, we're really sorry, we don't know what you're doing here, didn't you get the message?'"- Steve Moffat
Ok, so I've never read the original graphic novel, I'm not a fan of zombie movies (except for Shaun of the Dead) or the horror genre in general, but THAT. WAS. AWESOME. Definitely hooked me.

Definitely a good start, I'll be tuning in regularly (already have the DVR programmed to record the series).
The director is a Romero fan, and it shows. I was also impressed at the lack of punch-pulling with both the blood and kinetics involved in the gunplay. The first shooting in the series was brutal in oh-so-many wonderful ways... I guess I was surprised to see as much as I did, given that it's on TV and all.
My favorite moment was him coming down the hospital stairwell in the pitch black, lit only periodically by matches. What an absolutely perfect jump-fright moment, and the fact that they played it like they did only made me respect them more. They obviously understand the tropes of horror and are playing with them in really smart ways.
Two thumbs up. Now they need to learn the "double-tap" rule.
Okay, I'm no fan of zombie movies/comics, but I did find this to be entertaining and will continue watching, but still...
...I got the impression that these zombies are the result of some biological boo boo and are not supernaturally empowered. If so, then...
Why don't the zombies just dry up and blow away?
Why does it take a head shot to 'kill' one?
Do their hearts beat?
Do they breathe?
If not, how can their brains continue to function?
Why don't they eat each other?
Why are they so hungry anyway?
Are their digestive systems still functioning?
If a paraplegic/quadriplegic became a zombie, would he or she be able to move the previously paralyzed parts?
If fleas or ticks or whatever fed off a zombie (or tried to) and then moved to a more nummy normal human, would the normal human be infected?
Could a chimpanzee become a zombie? What about other mammals?
total kick to the gut
This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
The relationship between the partner and wife didn't come as a surprise, but it works as a vehicle to bring in some more human drama later in the series. Can't argue with that.
Highway is congested with abandoned vehicles on the side leading away from Atlanta, but empty on the side leading into the city? I know what that means. |
I liked the show but it would be nice to come across some reference to all the movies and games that do exist about such things and have at least one person apply that kind of "experience" to the situation.
I'd find a guy with a flamethrower and hide behind him.

Overall I enjoyed it, but...
How did a guy go unnoticed by the military and/or walking dead in a hospital bed for...some indiscriminate long length of time? A week? Two? More? With only one IV bag and no food or water? The hospital had clearly been overrun at some point as evidenced by the barricaded door.
That little bit has kind of stuck with me and sort of put me off of the rest of a pretty good show. I just don't buy that this guy is still alive.
Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!
Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.
You know I've been to Atlanta on a horse with no entrails..........

Now I'm not a big fan of Zombie Horror stuff myself. I've also not read the original comics either.
I found last night's premiere enjoyable. Well paced and the gore and graphic stuff handled well. Liked the use of Wang Chung's "Space Stuff" for the pull out shot from the tank at the end.
I think this will be worth watching.
Thank you for the time...
I was extremely impressed. I read the comics to a point, and I was not sure that the Human Drama could be done as well as in print... I was dead wrong. I will not be missing an episode.
Also to those who are concerned with the actions of some of those in the show. These are mundane people who may have never seen a zombie movie, much less read Max Brooks amazing Zombie Survival guide.
I will admit, I went to bed last night thinking about how to Zombie Proof my home.

Well I was stoked for this from the get go and I am just as stoked now. I haven't read the graphic novel but from what I've seen on the 'net it does look like it's kept fairly consistant with the feel of the graphic novel. Kudos to the writer and directors for that.
There were things I thought were a little dumb (like the empty side of the highway) but overall I was left wanting more. Also it looks like they are sticking with the slow walkers for the most part but that large group in Atlanta more pretty quickly. I've set the DVR for series record and honestly can't wait for more. For once I think the extra hype AMC gave this show was worth it!
After the Dawn of the Dead remake I wasn't sure I would ever find the slow Zombie Frightening again. The way TWD did it was great. I love the concept of the hoard.
I picked up a Zombie novel not long ago called Feed that also did it extremely well.
I noticed though that they do seem to have more speed, and are capable of quick bursts if they are well fed. I am not sure if this is by design, or just actor excitement.
There is some great Zombie literature out there other than just TWD. WWZ, Zombie Zurvival guide, Feed, and Xombies come to mind right off the bat.
I am a huge Zombie fan though, and can admit I may enjoy all of those more than others may.
There is something that baffles me. That police station (if any thing like the ones I have seen, and as a Paramedic I saw more than I wanted) was built like a fortress. I am not sure why the Jones family didn't just set up there. I would have.
In my plans there is a National Guard depot right down the road. There first thing, with my copy of the survival guide. If it is full of stupid people I would head up the mountains. I live in western NC, so there are plenty to choose from.

I would agree about the police station. I'd rather stay there than a house full of windows, especially with zombies walking around that remember how to turn knobs AND pick up stuffed rabbits...
I need to check out those novels. I love zombie books, my favorite is Day by Day Armaggedon by J. L. Bourne.
I was wondering why the police station wasn't ransacked, either by locals looking for guns, or by Shane when he skipped town with Rick's family.

Still, hot water, electricity, guns and ammo, and all in a fortress. Why would they leave, for that mater I am not sure why Rick wouldn't return when/if he locates his family.

[QUOTE=Dark One;3295484]There's newb and then there's just plain stupid.
You get better scares with the stupid. The stupid ratchets the tension up in the audience, priming them for delicious jolts of pure horror! If everybody were smart, it would be one boring series filled with people holed up in houses talking at each other very quietly.
I had great fun watching this. We've made a standing date with our friends to catch it every Sunday night.

The monitor/IV/etc may have shut off recently enough to keep him somewhat hydrated. *shrug* He did need water badly when he got up, of course.
Military? They're not seeing him walking. They see him inert in bed, so... not a threat. (And later they're probably too busy shooting to care.) The zombies? With whatever state he was in, he probably just didn't look like "food." Being (essentially) comatose, he wouldn't have made any noise or done anything to attract their attention. (And wasn't the door closed anyway?)
Feed did a good job explaining the hunger. They zombies needed flesh to convert into more of the virus to spread.

As soon as he got on the horse, I knew the thing was going to end up as walker food. It's not as bad as when they kill a dog in the movies, but it's pretty bad. Lousy deal for that horse.
