Walking Dead on AMC

Basically it's going to try to cover two issues per episode then? And the finale will have them where they were at the end of the first hardcover?

With the IV thing, unless I totally missed it, I thought that was the monitor. Not all IVs are run through a machine. My mom was in the hospital for a month earlier in the year and she had a stats monitor that looked exactly like that and the IV bags hung above it but they were gravity/pressure fed. Being that as it may, those bags usually didn't last more than a day or so. He did look feverish and dehydrated but I'm thinking a few days would be more likely as opposed to weeks.

Also it was a gunshot wound to the back/shoulder area, not usually life threatening, so I assumed it was just a few days different.

Also as far as the zombies not eating him while he slept. There was a gurney in front of his door which would limit their access to him slightly (though if they can turn a door knob they should be able to move a gurney). Also, I don't think he'd be making much noise which they established is pretty key to attracting the zombies in this movie.

Just watched the first episode last night, and I love it. Sorry, The Event, but I found my real replacement for Lost. Good suspense, good character development, great cinematography.

I don't watch AMC and only have the U200 package from U-Verse. Earlier in the thread I saw someone mention that it's on a free-month right now. Does anyone know if it's a free month on U-Verse as well? I'd hate to pick-up a channel just to watch one short series.

6 Episodes for the season?! Damn, I guess I'll just have to rewatch the episodes a few times to make up for it.

I have Showtime just for Dexter and HBO pretty much only for their original series. I very rarely watch movies on those channels, but the original programming is worth the price.

Well that's sucky. I also have the AT&T U-verse U200 package, and here in Austin it includes AMC.

I think most places which have a crucial emergency role have a generator. Heck, even my local cable access TV station has its own huge generator, because the Safety Complex (police/fire/paramedics) uses it as a communications hub. Because the power goes out so often here in New Hampshire (lots of trees overhanging powerlines), virtually every home and business has a generator. Most of them are also on well water, too, so the general power grid going down doesn't really affect us that much, just creates an annoyance.

Everywhere I lived in southern Ohio had gravity-fed water. So if the power goes out, you still have water as long as they pump it to the top of the tower. Either well water or gravity-fed system explains that pretty handily.

The thing about the shower scene, though, was that they were so excited and signing so loudly that I fully expected a ton of zombies to show up. That only a single one did was just Darabont messing with us.

Just checked on my account online, and it shows AMC as part of the U200 package. Glad to know I wasn't watching a temporary channel! Woot!

So I checked and it's not online. What the hell... I guess I'll be waiting for it on Netflix.

ok so fiction is not real. When you look at fiction that does not take place in our natural world you look not to see if it is realistic but whether it is plausible enough to keep you interested. I could be bugged by the fact that we never heard the generators. Those suckers are loud and would have attracted zombies anyway. Some people just can't suspend belief long enough to enjoy something like zombie horror.

On that note there are things we don't know. How long was he alone? When did the evacuation occur within the time frame of the protagonist? Was he abandoned 2 days ago, a week? We know that the hospital was occupied recently. Those bodies outside looked only a few days old. He would have vomited if it had been longer with that many rotting corpses.

Loved the show personally. They seem to be following the comic perfectly excepting some editing changes for drama and mystery.

I also recommend the marvel zombie books, as that was a fun read and the tie ins to the regular and ultimate universes were great!

I watched it last night and I really enjoyed it. Are all the episodes going to be a hour and a half? If so, I guess that makes up for only having 6 episodes. Hopefully they will make more episodes the next season. I only read the first issue of the comic, but I was impressed with how true they stayed to it. I'm already hooked on Robert Kirkman's Invincible, I'm worried that this show will make me go out and buy the comics.

I expected the kid to go off to a changing room, see a zombie trapped in there, get bit ,and return to dad and Rick and chase after them.

I guess I am just a pessimist when it comes to zombie fiction!

My guess is the hospital was a last stand locally, because of the NG helos outside, so he wasn't left unattended too long. Also there may have been someone who stayed behind to care for those who couldn't be moved.

With lack of noise and the gurney, he was safe since it doesn't appear that the zombies do an extensive search but a "random walk" if they aren't either pursuing someone or are attracted by noise. I'm sure any survivors fleeing the hospital may have attracted the bulk of what ever hoard was outside.

Actually if this show is "staying true" to the comic then it's probably a good thing it's only 6 episodes long. All too often people who make TV shows tend to think the only thing that's important is to make as many episodes as possible regardless if the story actually calls for having lots of episodes or not. Some of the best shows ever made are ones that understand that sometimes "less is more" and that to do the material justice you don't have to run it into the ground or "jump the shark" as quickly as possible.

Granted. But is it a series or a mini-series then?

I've enjoyed both AMC and USA adopting the BBC version of "seasons" which are only 6 episodes long, or in some cases 8. It makes it feel more like the US miniseries, such as Roots or something. One of my favorite US TV series was the adaptation of Maximum Bob, which was only 6 episodes. Sometimes that series length just feels right, because even the best TV series can have episodes which feel like padding when they have to do 22 or 24 episodes.

I couldn't care less what they call it as long as the number of episodes is appropriate for what the story is trying to accomplish.

Oh, I'm with you there.

I'm just confused, they keep calling it their new series, but then I hear 6 episodes... and wonder "what?" and is there no season 2 planned, or... I get all befuddled with my expectations of what I'm watching.

I guess I'll just kick back and enjoy whatever they put on, and figure it out from there.

True Blood stuck close to the first two books fairly well during the first two seasons. The third season started "creeping" across the plotlines of many of the later books (not just the third one) and it's not entirely clear if it's going to reign itself in and get more focused in the next season. I fear if it continues to spin out of control that it might not last much past its fourth season.

Well most American TV shows are forced into trying to follow the "standard" network model of a season being something like 22-23 one hour episodes for business reasons. The eternal problem with that mindset is that most stories/plotlines don't easily fit into that scheme without having to be "artificially" altered to fit it.

It goes against the "system" so to speak to have a show be only as long as it should be so it's sadly rare to see it happen. With the advent of DVD box sales I think more people are willing to try unusually numbered series like this because they know they'll be able to sell it as a unit no matter how many episodes it's cut into.

I can only suggest that we try to brake our collective notions of what a "series" or "mini-series" is supposed to be and look more towards accepting shows that have as many episodes as makes sense.

I was referring to the fact that the TV show adds a lot more material and actually manages to be better than the books, and it's one of the few shows that one can point to as an example of a series based on another serial medium like The Walking Dead.

It's "staying true" in a sense, that several scenes and plotlines in the first 2 comics were in it, but stretched out much much more, and some changed outright, in some cases for the better. For instance the shootout was more in depth in the show than the comic with more characters, there was only Rick and Shane in the comic with 2 gun men, and there was no "DON'T OPEN. DEAD INSIDE" sign painted on the door in the comic, and Rick did open it to see the dead inside (I liked how the show did it better), the bicycle zombie also had more parts...body parts I mean. I could go on...

EDIT: If you want to do a comparison and you have Comcast Cable, ONDEMAND has the first comic in full motion format.
