Paragon Layoffs??

Aren't we going to consider the fact that maybe he wanted to leave voluntarily? Perhaps he got a better offer somewhere else? You don't let go of your senior guys without a good reason. Maybe it wasn't Paragon Studio's decision.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Perhaps Neverwinter will have one lone bright spot then, courtesy of BaB's talents.

Don't pre-judge it - it could turn out to be Jack's masterpiece

He is NOT at Cryptic. His LinkedIn page very definitely has him looking for employment.

And if I knew of a place in Seattle, I'd refer him there in a heartbeat.

I'm with Cai here.

The key word is franchise in "the City of Heroes franchise". Since when was CoX more than 1 game/entity, split into 2 factions?

Very sad news for all those concerned who are now looking for work.

I am not ready to cry doom, far from it. This simply seems typical of NCSoft's generally ruthless attitude to their greatest resource. They seem to be very quick to wield the axe whenever it's deemed necessary.

Nothing wrong with axe-wielding when it's necessary. When it's just vaguely beneficial in the short term is probably less justifiable.

Playing Devil's Advocate here a little but a pretty sure seeing as CoH and CoV were released as separate games initially it could qualify as a franchise, especially when you add in GR. Maybe... Maybe not.

Also, BaBs and everyone else, best of luck for the future. Your presence will be missed (if it's one we've known).

His linkedin lists him as Senior Animator/VFX at Cryptic Studios (and doesn't appear to be a reference to his previous employment there.)
It actually did show up as a previous position. Along with the now previous position at Paragon.

I've changed my Linkedin several times as well due to changing assignments and every now and then upon removing the current, it somehow defaulted to the one before that if I didn't add something new immediately.

I'm not saying he isn't there, I'm just saying it could be just a glitch.

And with that said, until I hear the whole story form BaB himself, I'm not gonna start saying what happened to him. Or even attempt to.

The fact that Paragon is now listed as previous employer does suggest his departure. The whereto and why remains unknown. Plain and simple.

To all of those who were laid off, best of wishes to you. I also hope that as this door in your career closes, another door will open soon.

"In an effort to put a greater focus on the City of Heroes franchise, Paragon Studios is shifting resources within the studio. In order to optimize the refocus, there has been a reduction in force that has impacted a small amount of people."

hmm "greater focus" and "reduction in force" marketing has taken over Paragon Studios
I wonder if someone spoke up about the Party Pack?

My best wishes to those moving on. Thanks for your work on this game that I have a lot of fun with. And even though I can't play for long stretches of time, I keep my subscription constant since I know I'll be back in the City. And the reason I keep coming back is the work Paragon Studios puts into it.

Cheers to you, and best wishes for the future.

Some linkedin stalking and checking dates of recommendations pretty much tells who got laid off.

Seems that way, though perhaps their viewpoint is a bit skewed when they compare revenue from all their games in relation to CoX.

Currently (1st half of 2010), CoX comprises about 25% of North America sales, though down from previous years is still a big chunk.

But if you included all NCSoft game revenues in the same period, CoX makes up about 2%

Maybe that has something to do with it?

more likely they're acting like any other game company that hires people to push out a major product then goes back to 'normal'.

And as noted, in this case 'normal' is still a much larger staff than we were used to in the Cryptic days.

But keep up your drumbeat of ceaseless negativity, I'm sure some dissatisfied folk with poor reasoning skills will be happy to dance along.

That might be the case except for the fact that BAB was one of them, that speaks toward something else. But by all means, keep up your drumbeat of blindly extolling and supporting anything and everything that NCSoft does. I'm sure some simple minded folks with poor reasoning skills will be happy to dance along.

Aww darn, you quoted him.

Oh well.

The problem is that many people consider the word "layoff" in a negative bias. BAB's departure from Paragon Studios may not have been negatively biased. Some people get advanced notice of these things, even months ahead of time. As others have mentioned, it could have even been reciprocal or positive. Without further detail that most of us will never receive, anything beyond the drab Marketing quip delivered by TheOcho is purely conjuncture.

Nah, simple minded folks with poor reasoning skills are more motivated by fear, hysteria, and baseless speculation.

Look, we don't know the circumstances of the layoff, nor the conditions, nor the reasoning behind who was let go and who wasn't. Making ANYONE the bad guy just makes everyone look stupid.
