The 5 Most Annoying Maps & Mission Types

I definitely agree that the cake cave room was far worse before jump jet packs, temp travel powers and vet travel powers at 6.

My mosted hated mission is save the 4 MU mystics in St.Martial so many wailers so many ambushes it gets really really hairy on bigger teams with so much -res flying around.

I hate only 2 maps.

1 - all blue caves and cakeroom
2 - pool room in council caves

Actually I like CoT caves.

All mission types are ok for me. More I hate some enemy groups.

Prunejuice is warriors drink.

Anything in orenbega or the coal mine maps. Avoid those like the plague.

I think it doesn't bother me much after doing things like working on SG healing badges by standing in a lava pool while auto spamming heals. I know in advance it's gonna get boring so I have something to do while I wait.

Yeah, that's how I did the "Stop 30 Fir Bolg..." mission last time I did it (nowadays I don't take Skipper as a contact entirely because of that one mission). I killed what I felt was enough, jumped on top of the hedge, and went to take a nap.

My least favorite mission is from Unai Kemen's arc: Defeat all psychic Clockwork on the outdoor factory map. That map isn't suited to a defeat all, and there could not be a worse choice of enemies for it than Clockwork (flying, vulnerable to knockback, gears that run off if they get the chance).

My personal hell: Escort Hostages on the PTS map. Actually, ANY mission on that map. I can't quite pin down why, but I hate HATE that one with a passion.

The Abrams is one of the most effective war machines on the planet. - R. Lee Ermy.

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

No one has mentioned Stop X from escaping when he is spawned 30ft from an elevator yet.

Yup trivialized by an Immobilize, but still stupidly annoying.

I agree with the folks that say the Croatoa mission isn't that bad. Clear the first attack wave except for the toughest guy, then put a low dmg (or non dmg) mezz on autofire.

Even worse are "Stop Crimson from escaping" and the one with the Arachnoid EB who has insane regen and is immune to slows. Those aren't as easily trivialized by an immobilize.

Am I the only person who doesn't mind the Council/5th fish farm? There are other Council maps that are far worse, like those 4-way junction rooms with a hundred tiny little corridors and stairways which are always where the blinkies are hidden.

My vote goes to the Go Talk To Some NPC That Was New At One Time But Now You Have Known He Was There For Years. Seriously, I KNOW about the PVP zones, The Hollows, and Faultline.

Also possible is Defeat Council In Steel Canyon. Bloody 5th Column always get 'em first...

  • Defeat X amount of carnies in PI. Seriously this mission should be arrested and thrown in to a room full of sappers!
  • Defeat igneous in the gulch. While it isnt impossible, i've always found that i died nonstop trying to do this mission. Then again i havent done it in years so it could be put down to me not knowing much about the game i suppose so this one is 50/50.
  • Defend the TPN building from the destroyers. Ok i dont hate this mission, its just any excuse to mention one of my favourite missions

Part of the problem is that it is apparently bugged now, Mender Lazarus won't help you destroy the thing.

On the other hand, at least the Shivan Destroyer guarding him isn't an EB anymore.

Yeah, I remember first trying it out on test... With a fire/kin troller. Being exemped to level 25 after being at 50 for so long and not on a team, ugh, that was painful. Didn't have a problem keeping the Shivan EB held, but didn't have Hot Feet or any other source of real damage, took forever.

And now with Laz not helping with the meteor, I almost couldn't damage the meteor fast enough with my FF/Energy defender. She's not built to deal damage, she's built to survive and help others survive. It was the first time I ever even noticed that the meteor regenerated.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever liked that mission.

Any multiple glowy click mission. I let them fail if timed, or auto-complete them otherwise.

Non-climax missions that require defeating elite bosses, especially if the EB is mentioned as an afterthought. "Oh, by the way, you'll also have to fight Silver Mantis. Good luck with that." I ususally auto-complete or intentionally fail such missions, unless I'm in the mood for them, which is rare. I don't mind an EB that is featured as the climax of an arc. I also don't mind a non-climax EB fight so much if NPC support is provided. (I've made exceptions for the Praetorian arcs with a few characters, to get the related accolade.)

For zone missions, my least favorite is the Rikti hunt in the Abandoned Sewer Network. I did that one twice before the auto-complete feature was added, and I now happily auto-complete it every time.

I was working off debt on that mish on a lowbie toon after a failed attempt at the low level Cap SF. I counted each baddie I defeated to see how many i took to wipe off my debt bar.

This was solo. On villainous. I think there were more than 100 enemies on that map.

The one against Clockwork, from Marshal Brass? Having to fight all those endurance drainers before you have Stamina might be one reason you don't like it.

There's one on the same map I think from the RWZ, where you have to find hostages guarded by Rikti. That one is irritating because the hostages are very difficult to see - it always seems to be night in that mission - and the Rikti Drones make roaming around looking for them without constant fighting impractical even with stealth. It turns the mission into a "kill most", if not a "kill all".

I have to agree about loathing that map, but any layer room is atrocious to me. Having to look in all those nooks and crannies becomes very frustrating.

You know what I hate even more than layered rooms? That one Crey lab map that gets used ALL THE TIME and has elevators EVERYWHERE. That all go different places.

I just had a "rescue and escort two people" mission on that.

On my Widow.

Who, as one might expect, is stealthy.

Ewwwwwww.

At least on that map, if it's the same one I'm thinking of (elevator to immediate right of entrance, elevator to left of closed doors, and one off to the left of the room behind the closed doors), the objective will usually be through that second vator, then at the end of the long hall where there is that ramp and small platform of doom with another closed door on the other side, behind which is where you need to get to.

The Stop 30 fir bolg mission..
The RWZ mission, I think its from the dark watcher, with hostages that are totally crazy and try to solo mobs, only to die..making it fail
The mission with Widdershins, the crazy archnoid EB..that my fort couldnt even kill on 0/0
A rescue from Phipps I think..were the bane spider you are meant to rescue always seems to die, before you ever get there.
But the worst is the Arachnos base map, with the GIANT multi level room, and you have to clear it all.

The only missions I hate are "gimmick" mission like the 30 Fir Bolg one or simultaneous clicks or anything that's either impposible to solo or too damn hard. Hostage escorts I highly dislike, for the simple fact that they're boring. A few minutes of dead air while I haul a hostage through five floors of empty real estate.

On the flip side, I enjoy complex maps like the PTS and Oranbega. It reminds me that we exist in a three-dimensional word, rather than a two-dimensional planar one. I pine for the old days of Descent where game maps weren't just as simple an open field or a 2D shape drawn on a black background, and where actual 3D awareness was required to play. I miss that game, and all of its sequels are just too old to bother with.

  • Kill-alls in layer cake.
  • Fascist Day Spa And Casino
  • Rescue X hostages in Kings Row outdoor map
  • Bullet points are sexy
  • Find the named boss in {sunken} Boomtown
  • Oranbega with the Portal Room/narrow ramp corridors
Interestingly enough, I rather like the Oranbegan layout in general - the overlapping fields of aggro and narrow passages usually make for some interesting fights. Fir Bolg makes things interesting too - it's fairly easy to solo, too, but that much more challenging as the team grows.

Heh. I remember this one custom map, I think it was called Chinese Box, where you started in a small cubic chamber with a small cube simply consisting of six doors in its middle - except each of those doors led to its own {hyperspatial?} network of tunnels. I have to admit, though, trying to find my way around most Descent levels was frequently frustrating.

My SG calls this one "15 minutes of constant delicious XP". We usually get a team of 5-6 characters and see how many bars of XP we can get. (And with SSK, they can even be higher level than the mission owner and still benefit!) Not to mention midlevel Magic salvage.

Rescue 21 Magicians from the Circle of Thorns

Had this one on Carni for months and months (it was before we could drop missions), could never find the last one.

After a while I just started to wish the CoT would get a move on with their damn ritual. I mean ingame they had those magicians hostage for YEARS!!!
