"I am not nor have I ever been a villain..."
An OOC tell explaining that my character wasn't and has not been a villain, and if they kept it up after that, just ignoring them. Or perhaps mocking them depending on their power sets. "You call me a villain and yet you're swinging that broadsword around? I'm only punching." (In the case of my MA Stalker)
Deal with his reservations in character, it is a perfectly valid RP choice for his character to distrust Stalkers in general, all your character can do is to teach him better IC.
"I accidently killed Synapse, do we need to restart the mission?" - The Oldest One on Lord Recluses Strike Force
The only problem I have with someone "distrusting Stalkers in general" is How does the character know they're a stalker in the first place? People don't walk around with little symbols floating above their heads to tell you what Archetype they are. My main is a Blaster who has Stealth, and Superspeed with a Stealth Proc in it, yet no one has ever accused him of being a villain when they first met him.
In short, unless Moo actually said, IC, "I'm a stalker", the other character had no realistic way of knowing it, which makes IC dealing with it a waste of time, since the other player has gone OOC when reacting to his character.
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*
The player sounds like he was a bit dim. *shrugs*

I ran into an interesting RP issue last night.
Jaguar Strike is my i18 Stalker. He's the son of a European fertility spirit and a South American terror god. I've been working on him and his backstory since before the i17 launch. While he is a troubled young man, the trouble is due to his vast powers and the feelings of despair and isolation they cause him. The majority of which have been sealed by a heavenly therapist in order to help him heal from depression and detachment. His sojourn in Praetoria to aid the resistance was also suggested by his therapist (an Archangel, no less!) as an exercise to reintegrate himself with humanity. He was always intended to be very firmly in the 'Neutral Good' range, despite shadowy powers. His ability to kill so very easily and that fact that those abilities have been sealed are referenced in his bio. A scrapper in a pickup group tried to roleplay with me last night, but just wasn't getting it. I insisted that I wasn't evil and that I'd never been a villain when he expressed reservations about grouping with one. I even tried complaining that his expectations were like those that had caused me such grief in the past. About the only thing I didn't do was say 'Hey, look at my character info and the number of times I've switched-- See that? That's the resistance-to-Hero switch. I've never even BEEN to the Rogue Isles, thank you very much.' Eventually, I gave up trying to RP with him, thanked the team, and called it a night. How would you have dealt with this situation? |
I'm not sure knowing AT classifies as metagaming.
The CoH comic showed at least twice where supers were referred to by their AT.

On an aside, this is the second thread in which someone has described a hero discriminating based on AT. That's not very heroic, is it?

And personally I'm not one for using the AT terms in character, and when it comes up it often rankles me a little. Zortel isn't a Blaster. Zortel is a woman in a suit of powered armour that fires energy blasts. Rushmore isn't a Tanker, Rushmore is a patriotic hero who uses his mastery of stone both take and give out heavy damage. Nachtbrecher isn't a Scrapper, he's a former Axis supersoldier who after a trip to Thule gained the magic and technology required to bend darkness to his will.
Though if anyone ever calls Alraune a Dominator, she's going to reply 'I'm more of a switch, actually.'

Come on, Lis, when was the last time you chucked me one of these?
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

How does a "roleplayer" know that a character is a "stalker" or not?
That would have been my response.

In my experience it's a common problem with players that don't really understand the concept of role-playing. Some people just can't get it thru their heads that their are things the player knows that their character has no way of knowing.
Well, my Mastermind has confirmed after extensive investigation that Longbow did not in fact commit the crime against her homeworld which led her to be sent to Primal Earth in the first place and if Longbow had cooperated with her investigation then she would have had to kill far fewer of them and their allies.

When you roleplay counter to game design you can't expect everyone you meet to just go with it.

Is it heroic to discriminate against one because of their place of origin?
A Roleplayer who can't find a way to integrate other people's characters into their roleplay without being insulting or disruptive is a bad roleplayer.
A CoH roleplayer who doesn't acknowledge that people are coming over from Praetoria and make allowances for people who RP their Praetorian characters as Praetorians is a bad CoH roleplayer.
That guy sounds like one of those people who happen to catch a glance at a fellow party member's character sheet, notice it says "Lawful Evil" and start treating said character like crap even though the character has never done anything detrimental to the party.

The terribly convoluted backstory irritates me more than the metagaming, tbh.
IIRC, the first was the last page of the Blue King Comics, which also had Apex referring to his level, and the second from the Top Cow ones was self-referential I think.

HOWEVER *to the OP*, if you want to say it's IC to say the ATs...one can always say your registration puts you into a category, and anyone can read such registration. So, having an IC conversation as to your AT is easy to work around (I still don't care for it or like it...but eh).
However, the part that would irk me the most is the assuming you're a villain part. Even if they cross-over meter, one could just as easily say it didn't ICly happen. And there would be plenty of reasons to make the switch, even if the toon wouldnt ICly. I know I have a few concepts that would be better served (and I would love to get) with Soul Storm and thusly Soul Mastery as a whole (even the name of the PPP is better than Dark Mastery...for concept).
the best way to handle it, is do what's best for you. If it's quitting the team because one of the members is to annoying for you, do so. Or say "Whatever" and run with the team OOC.
I know I'll laugh at anyone who says my Stalker is a Praetorian. Nooo...my Stalker is a Primal who went over to Praetoria after hearing of the stories over there. I wanted to try my main as a Stalker versus the other ATs I've tried so far. If I can't start as a Stalker AT in Paragon, that leaves only two options, and Praetoria is just AWESOME, sooo...starting in Praetoria it is (even if Praetorian storyline doesn't account for what I think it should have been an obvious thing...Primal coming to Praetoria. More so when Primal already had visitors from other dimensions already).
