I'm late to the Firefly bandwagon.

When the series first came out I was interested, I figured "Cowboys in space! That's gotta be awesome!" but the first episode aired on FOX didn't grab me, and further attempts to watch it were hampered by schedule juggling and, as I recall, it getting pre-empted by sports or something, so I gave up.

Since it recently came up on Netflix streaming I decided to finally give it a fair go. And in the proper viewing order, too, since as I understand it the first episode FOX aired wasn't the actual first episode. Had FOX aired the actual first episode first it would have grabbed my attention much better.

Yeah, I'm years late to the party, but now I get to finally experience the regret that it got terribly mishandled and only went for one season. And as I'm a few episodes from the end, I'm already experiencing the regret.

The worst part is, I don't get to say "Why didn't anyone tell me about this"...

Jayne!

The Man they call Jayne!
Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'.
He saw the mudders' lament.
And he saw the Magistrate takin'
every dollar and leavin' five cents.
So he said: "You can't do that to my people."
said "You can't crush them under your heel."
So Jayne strapped on his hat
and in 5 seconds flat
stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal.

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Now here is what separates heroes
from common folk like you and I.
The man they call Jayne
he turned 'round his plane
and let that money hit sky.

He dropped it onto our houses
he dropped it into our yards.
The man they called Jayne
he stole away our pain
and headed out for the stars!

(Here we go!)

He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

I haven't watched it yet, but it's on my Netflix queue along with the movie... I'm trying to get through...

Xena s2-5
The Batman comics i've listed elsewhere
Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Dr. Who episodes
And Weaponology (so far it's interesting...go watch it on netflix)
and Firefly...

and Superman comics are on list of things to watch soon too...oh and finishing the 2003 TMNT series that I caught up to ans stopped watching...and TMNT comics... and still have the other half of Power Rangers to watch and

there is just too much...

btw... movie or series first?

Series first. You don't exactly need to see it before the movie, but the movie was pitched as a pseudo-second season, so there are some character relationships that you come in halfway through their progression.

And then go watch the first five minutes of the 'Castle' Halloween episode. It will make you laugh, trust me..

I absolutely loved that opening.

"What're you supposed to be anyway?"
"Space cowboy!"
"There's no cows in space, and didn't you wear that, like, five years ago?"
"I like it."

And the reference to Fillion's time on Firefly was wonderful.
Reminds me of when they had James Marsters shake his head at the concept of vampires on Smallville.

I'd put the Firefly series ahead of all of that. Then the movie, Serenity.

Like the OP, I was late to the party. Never got around to seeing the show when it was on, and have regretted it . . . but it is pretty nice to see the entire series without having to wait between episodes.

Once you are done with the series watch the Extended Gag Reel

My favorite thing from the whole series comes from it: Nathan Fillion running around during the pan around the coffin. Especially Alan Tudyk's reaction to it.

Congratulations on your new-found Browncoat status. Please join the queue of fans squee'ing at whenever Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion are even remotely mentioned and you may as well leave your credit card at QMX's door.

I agree. I saw the movie years before I saw the series and then watched the movie again after watching the series and it made the movie even better.

total kick to the gut

And go buy the boxed DVD set of the series, it has 2-3 episodes that never aired. It's cheap too, usually runs less than $20 and can occasionally be found on Amazon for $10.

I liked at the end of that episode as the Doc comments on how he isn't sure how to feel about shooting people and the Shepard's response: "Son, I was there.....you don't need to worry"

Also be on the lookout later this year as the awaited comic "Shepard's Tale" comes out that gives us the background on Shepard Book.
