Question: What powers do you want Alternate animations for?
Sonic Blast! That emanate from the hands!
Super Strength animations with kicks!
Varied styled Martial Arts kicks!
Non-coming-out-of-the-body Spines/Thorns! Ideally, replacing the 'spines' with thrown weapons like knives!
Air Superiority needs an alternate like Havoc Punch does.
Blasts that can come from the head (like Psychic) or hands (like energy or electric).
Ground punch for all stomp type powers (fissure, flare, aura, etc).
Confuse with a hands at your temples alternate instead of that wavy hand animation.
Kick animation alt for low level single target punch (like you get with brawl while holding a weapon).

Lots of good posts here (I was getting out-paced by replies while I was trying to read! And by the time I post this I'm sure there will be even more).
Here's my list of wants and desires:
Broadsword: I second this two-handed animation idea. The broadsword offers a lot of interesting and varied options for two hands, and could show an interesting counterpoint to Katana. If anyone isn't sure of the voracity of this idea, just check out some of these videos.
Additionally: Broadsword NEEDS some Rapier action, and if there was ever a time to add Rapier options to the broadsword, the time is most certainly when considering new animations. I'm sure there's lots of varied and interesting ways to incorporate some rapier love into the set.
Assault Rifle and DP: Assault rifle, as other people have mentioned, is kind of bland. Dual Pistols is, as noted by many, often ridiculous and inappropriate to character concepts. Something that I think would be intensely refreshing is actually displaying trained and competent firearm handling in the animations. No one fires an assault rifle or a carbine from the hip in real life, and anyone who's fired a gun in real life thinks it looks completely silly. The same thing with pistols. I think alternate animations that showed real firearm discipline would greatly expand the interest in those sets. I'd love to see someone in game actually square up their shoulder to the stock, aim, and fire.
Every Empty Hand Powerset: Excluding martial arts and the like, this suggestion is for every blaster/controller/defender/dominator/corrupter/et cetera, whose animations are always "Throw arms out wide!" or "Wind up arm and then extend!" Now that Kinetic Melee is out, there's really TONS of room for improvement to these animation sets. Anyone who's wanted to roll a gesticulation-style wizard has been drooling at the idea of Demon Summoning or Kinetic Melee style animations for their powers since the moment their videos first surfaced on the internet. I don't want to lift my arms and then suddenly wind arrives from no where. I want to make arcane and suggestive gestures that imply my character is actually conjuring the power from somewhere!
Travel Powers: I'd love to see some new animations for these. Other people have already made great suggestions, but the two I have the most fondness for is hoverboards, and "less drama queen" animations for Teleport. Come to think of it, Teleport could use arcane gestures too.
Claws: I'd love to have a "no claws" variant for Claws. You wouldn't even have to change the animations for me to like it, as most of them are just punching people anyway. Maybe a new sound set? That said, Eviscerate could use much less "here, random backflip!"
Unarmed Combat: Unarmed fighting could really use some more love. I like that MA was one of the first sets to get alternate animations, but the alternate animations were really lackluster and uninspiring, and really weren't representative of how someone would actually punch people. More kicks, more punches, for MA and Dark Melee and SS and all of them. You know what I'd really like to see? The flurry of punches animations from Super Speed and Dark Melee being replace with something more like Wing Chung. Less "here's a bunch of wild flailing haymakers" and more "Here's a deadly string of rotary punches into your chest." Example.
If I think of more, I'll totally post them.
Just thought of one - a more form fitting Ice Armor and Granite Armor option. Those big ice blocks are just all kinds of wrong.

Being able to pick the cast animations for any ranged attack would be groovy.
So would being able to pick if it comes out of a gun, out of your head/eyes, chest.
Examples I wish could be done in CoH:
-A character who's cold powers come from a pistol, like Captain Cold.
-A character who's Energy Blast comes out of the eyes, like Cyclops.

-I second the suggestion for being able to pick animations that alternate. I'd like the option to randomly use the foot stomp or ground pound animations in SS.

Probably stated, but for the weapon based sets (as well as shields), the capacity to choose which hand holds what would be absolutely perfect. I get a little tired with all characters having either the same handedness or being ambidextrous. A little variation is a good amount of spice to add to the game.
Give Broadsword, Axe, and Mace the Katana treatment.
Namely, more unique animations for each.

A lot of the blast sets have identical animations (with different effects granted) a few alternate animations here or there could really make every set unique.
But if you're thinking of entire sets.
Axe/Mace/Broadsword. One of these needs to get alternate animations, or they all need to get different alternate animations each.
The blast sets could have animations for different body parts.
Eyes for energy/Rad. I['d also like to see a Kamehameha/Hadoken style Energy blast. Maybe for Snipe.
Mouth for fire, y'know, breathing fire... or maybe change the effects to include lava and the like.
How about some crouching and aiming animations for Assault Rifle?
I knew I'd think of more the moment I finished posting.
Dual Blades: Dual blades, in my opinion, could really use some new animations. Something shorter ranged and more brutal. I'd like to see some actual knives in the hands of heroes, rather than tantos and a bunch of inappropriate animations. Kali/Escrima style two-handed knife fighting with quick jabs and subtle slashes. And get rid of that awful horrible pinwheel attack.
Elemental Swords: Existing weapon sets need more options for elemental swords, and sets that already have elemental swords need options for either more proliferation across their powers or less proliferation across their powers. I think someone else pointed out how swords are very distinct and iconic. The ability to emphasize this would be super duper.
Not reading all the replies, so forgive me if I'm repeating common themes.
Dual Pistols. All of it. Not that the animations are bad, but they're so narrow thematically.
Hasten. At least a no FX version. I'm tired of EVERY character having glowing hands.
Everything Kheldian. Okay, really, the problems there go so far beyond animations that it's probably outside the scope of the question, though having to look exactly like every other Nova and Dwarf out there doesn't help.
Integration. I have lots of character concepts that can use Regen. Zero of them beat their chest like Tarzan.
Medicine pool.
I would want to see ranged powers (Electrical, Energy, Fire, Ice, Radiation, & Sonic) to have animations added so they can be fired from either a tech looking laser pistol, magic looking wand/staff or a tech looking rod, in addition to the original animations.
It doesnt need to happen all at once, they can slowly be converted.
Super Strength Knockout Blow & Foot Stomp to have the Thunder Strike animation added.
Midnight Grasp would be at the top of my list. The tentacles look terrible and are too polygonal in appearance, and the way that they flop around like wet noodles does not denote any sense of DOT impact or restraining effect on the enemy. The open palm delivery of its negative energy is *yawn* as well.
Shadow Maul could really use something new-- it looks slow and sounds like a dieing fish flopping around on the floor of a boat. Its animation is also available in the Pool Powers (Flurry) and to everyone that has enough vet months (Sands of Mu). The fact that everyone and their mother can employ Sands of Mu really begs for characters that actually take Dark Melee to be able to differentiate themselves.
And I hate to say it, but Energy Blast just looks terribly dated across the board. Especially relative to the amazing new energy effects available to NPCs in Praetoria.

I want to see Pool attacks have themes to match the various elements we have. For example, Air Superiority could have a Fire theme you could pick to make it match your Fiery Melee powers, an Electric Theme to match your electric blast powers, a Super Strength theme, etc. Obviously the damage types and secondary effects would stay the same, but the sounds and visuals would match other sets. The themes I was thinking were:
- Fire
- Electric
- Ice
- Stone
- Energy
- Dark
- Martial Arts (whooshy stars)
- Super Strength (yellow glow and impacts)
- Kinetic (Kinetic Melee)
It really wouldn't be as big a project as you might think at first, since there's in fact only 5 pool attacks: Boxing, Kick, Air Superiority, Jump Kick, and Flurry, and a lot of the needed FX could be recycled from other power FX.
Issue 16 made me feel like this.

Eviscerate
- Punching animations for ALL Martial arts powers.
- Optic Blast (eye beams and big blasts) alternatives for Energy Blast (not sure if this is acceptable)
- Aid Self animation.
- Not exactly an animation but: offensive set based auras for Brawl (if you fiery melee, get customizable fiery hands)
- Some non-backflipping animation for Jump Kick
- More fluid animations for Total Focus and Energy Transfer (not shorter, more fluid, with less pauses)

Actually, that would be pretty cool(ha ha) for Ice Armor too. So, that you would be able to have a partial armor version of it, like Stone Armor.
I didn't see anywhere where this was limited to attacks, so would you consider reducing the bulkiness of armors like ice and stone for females, so it doesn't look so out-of-wack with someone more slender. Also I would like it if the geometries count where a little higher as to not look like a blockhead with ice armor on.

Yes, very sublte particles and animations for things like super speed/hasten/aid self and other pools would be nice, but for some of the powerset powers, a few ideas:
-Throw shield as a form of hurl, when pairing super strength and shield, or stone melee and shield.
-A form of ripper that doesnt involve the character flipping, perhaps a charge up-like thorn slash of some form?
-More for martial arts, use Arkham asylum as a form of inspiration
-of course, different ways to use blast like ranged powers, different hand positions, etc
The other travel powers besides fly ( Super speed, jump and teleport) such as alternate origin themed versions .
Also I'd like an aura that is a blend of your costume pieces colors - so that when used with super speed - you get a proper 'blurred' image of your toon running at super speed.
The whirling attacks and 'haymaker' attacks could use some alternates fo sho.
Basically any attack animation that is repeatedly used could stand to have some alternates made.
I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.
In no particular order:
- Gravity Control. Can we please, please, please, please have the "flip you in the air" animation from Ghost Widow's hold ("Soul Storm"?) as an alternative for Gravity's hold, but without the glowing "eels"? Can you imagine how epic it would look to use that animation in the AoE hold power?
- Broadsword, Battle Axe, and War Mace. They all currently use the same animations. Would really like to get something that conveys the full "weight" of a the mace and axe, as currently they are held like a sword. The "whirlwind" attacks in particular are a spot you could put something cool. I've seen the work you've done on Katana and Dual Blades and think the other melee sets would look amazing with such styles (although I'd honestly prefer sticking to something "Western" looking considering how many "Eastern" styles we have.)
- Traps, Devices. I would love a reskin that is "magical" looking instead of mechanical, featuring glowing orbs, arcane circles, and magical crystals. And perhaps one that has a 'tiki' look as well.
- Hasten. No graphics option.
- Anything that's using the animation currently used by the Thunderstrike melee power. That's the one where you slooowly jump into the air, then slooowly come back down and bring your fists down. The animation time obviously can't change, but the animation could be a lot more interesting.
- Electric Control, Electric Blast. Option to have some powers to originate from the sky instead of from your arms.
First thought is flurry/shadow maul/sands of mu. That animation always looked weirdly oxymoronically paced where the main fists were kinda moseying while the ghost fists suggested there was supposed to be a sense of hyperspeed.
Second thought is ghost slaying axe (and most weapon-based powers) don't have any kind of fun weapon flourish, like what was included with dual pistols. The ghost slaying axe animation in particular just seems so sedate and stale.
Third thought is all the weapon draw animations. A simple over-shoulder pull is fine. But there are other flashy ways weapons can manifest into one's hand. In fact, if an attempt to use a weapon power would be blocked due to targets being out of range (or of the wrong type, such as when targeting allies/stores/contacts), I would highly suggest adding a weapon flourish animation (or reusing a weapon draw animation). Weapon flourishing in other games (such as the original KotoR) proved to be a very popular activity in some of the less active moments.
