Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

No shame! It's all good, besides my post about your post about his post was kinda dumb.

1. Gating content. Levels allow you to gate content so that a level 3 can't wander it, or deliberately attempt level 33 content, no matter how powerful they manage to make their level 3. In CoH, this is heavily blunted with the sidekick system, but not completely eliminated. In CoH, you can run level 33 content with your level 3 *if* you are teaming. So teams get to escort lower level players through higher level content (most of the time) but the content is still gated in that someone in your team has to be high enough to access that content. And if you solo, then the person in your team with that requirement is always you.

2. Segregation. Levels allow you to segregate your playerbase into groupings so the level 40s aren't dominating the level 4s in the same zones, the same content, the same whatever. You can't have everyone standing in the same spot, so the natural way to spread out your players is into different areas gated by different things, and one of them is level.

That's basically it. There are other minor reasons, but none without alternatives.
I would add:

3. The psychological factor of making continual progress in gaining power. In the case of this game, that's gaining more slots and powers. This is quite a powerful incentive, and shouldn't be ignored.

I'll add, though, that even with the evidence why more levels would be a bad idea, I wouldn't want a level increase regardless. I'm perfectly content with level 50 as a level cap.

Shrunk down to the size of an atom, sent back in time, and injected into marlon brando's butt to fight cholesterol which has, since murdering him, been biding its time and building an underground base, ready to take over the world, like some kind of bigger, bacon smelling hamidon.
Only we can stop it before it begins!

I disagree with OP on grounds of extra balance pases, more grind, and Marlon Brando's assfat.

Keep it 50, add better end game content, not crack and grind like some MMOs do.

<snip>

For example, levels give the player a path for measuring progress, but there are other ways to do that including the end game system the devs are currently working on for City of Heroes.
I'll also point out APB for this. OK, it's mostly FPS with a very small touch of MMO, but it's level-less (you gain rep with a contact, your threat level rises and falls, etc.)

It takes a bit to get used to - and the lack of segregation (being FPS/PVP based) can cause some issues when you're dispatched against and/or your target calls for backup. (Imagine, in this game, if your level 10 was opposed by a level 9 - who then called in three fully IO'd out level 50s to deal with you, no degradation of ability or number of powers, etc. There are times it makes it decidedly not fun. )

Besides, the Incarnate System will allow you to effectively gain more levels/abilities without increasing your actual (base?) level. Presumably the end game system Positron has mentioned will add threats that require these additional abilities to overcome them.

Science is overrated. Personally I prefer throwing magic pixi dust and chanting some words to make people stay crunchy in milk. If you want to use such things as science, then so be it.

I believe it was Arthur C. Clarke who said that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic? So with that I say Tomato/Tomahto.

Hold on.... for a person who pronounces the word tomato as "tomahto" they'd read what you wrote as "Tomahto/Tomahto." I believe what you should have typed was "Tomayto/Tomahto".

I humbly realize that I have just improved your life immeasurably. No need to utter the profuse thanks that I'm sure you're wanting to type even as you read this. It's all in a day's work.

I like 50. It's a nice number. And since this game revolves around me, well... I'm sure you get where I'm going.

Stealth Anvil Trebuchet sounds like a nice name for a band.

... Then again I got locked out of the house all night because I stayed up too late playing CoX, so I may just be exhausted.

I sure hope someone wakes up soon.

Has anyone mentioned (I tried to read all the posts but I could have missed it) that if the object is to give 50s something to do the same goal would be accomplished by creating new arcs for 50s?

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

Sort of, but I'm not sure exactly which Circle of Hell is for self-centered egotism.
