Mystic Fortune Annoyance
I'll admit to "drive by"s quite often, but I usually try to focus on people actually seeming to play the game. For instance, I wouldn't bother doing it to some 50 sitting around under Atlas (usually plenty of appreciative lowbies to hit with it anyway) and places like WW/BM are strictly off limits.
But, yeah, for the small minority that this bothers, I'm in favor of the "off-buff button".

I never got that either. Always seemed weird standing in WW, buffed to the gills for no reason at all. University, too. "Quick, I need SB to complete this invention more efficiently!"

I'm always amazed when yet another person who hates being buffed by friendly, helpful people in a multiplayer game crawls out to post this thread. Is there no end to you? People will complain about anything at all, it seems.
Including people complaining about people complaining.

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:
When i play my tank, i hate Speed boosts, and the Mystic Fortune has one of those..i always declined those, and now i'm stuck with them
One time i was gonna herd a mob into a ball, but just before i hit the mob someone read my fortune, got stuck breaking my nose on every wall for the next 20 minutes! Please give us back the option to decline these!!!!!! |

We lightly tapped the accelerator and the car exploded, and it's your fault.
Really? An extra 14 mph made you lose control of your toon for 20 minutes?

Jeez, ***** about the Tower, that actually damages you slightly on cast.

That was about my reaction. I can understand not wanting SB, especially in tight quarters. But about all the Fool does is allow me to switch off Sprint.

This 'helpful' nonsense is mostly just that...nonsense. What danger am I about to face standing in the middle of the Black Market or WW setting up bids?
How little you think I should find something annoying is irrelevant because you are not me.
I didn't shout in Broadcast that I needed buffing and the person doing the buff has no way to know what I'm going to do next. They are not on my team and have no vested interest in buffing me unless I'm in danger(which is about the only time I throw around buffs on people without them asking).
It doesn't matter what buff I find annoying. If I happen to not like The Hermit, then it's no business of yours apart from deciding if you want to respect my right to not have a buff cast on me or not.
The small extra speed from The Fool is only negligible if there isn't another speed boost of some kind active. Suppose I had the Day Job travel speed boost? The 2 stacked together is a heck of a lot faster than someone might want.
In the end, that's all I'm saying. I can deal with a short duration buff...because 2 or 3 minutes is tolerable. But having a buff I don't want for 20 minutes certainly is not tolerable to me.
Well it's a both, I take any type of a both in the game and most of these Mystic both are really Awesome and they will help you out.

The worse part about MMOs sometimes are all the other players.
The Abrams is one of the most effective war machines on the planet. - R. Lee Ermy.
Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?
A: You crash into another one.
The reason this is a bigger deal than other buffs is that the option existed for these, so people are used to being able to do it.
Just make it a global option to ignore mystic fortune, which is even better than the previous popup.
A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!
Hm. Thinking about this a bit, I can see why the devs might not want to give players the ability to delete this power, if not any other. If they can delete the Fortune, then it takes a bit of the 'random' out of it, as people can just keep deleting powers until they get the one they want. And remember, Tower was changed so even multiple castings won't kill a player.
So then we have the option to block incoming buffs. The thing is, if it was made that players just didn't get certain effect from others, I'd be willing to bet there would be just as many people complaining about wasted end and power recharge as there are people complaining about the buffs now.
Quick example, someone who has buffs set to off gets on a team with an Emp on it. Along the way, the buffless player hits an unlucky streak and looses a good chunk of his health. The Emp, who's attention has been spread across the team hasn't noticed buffs aren't effecting the player, and now sees him in trouble so he throws out Fort...which does nothing. And now the power, which could have helped a different player on the team has just been wasted.
But there is another option! There is a mechanic in the game that can make players with BuffBlock on invalid targets to friendly powers. The only detail I don't know is if devs can customize the invalid marker for only certain buffs yet. Otherwise, it may make things like Heals and Rezes unusable as well. Though as far as needing a Rez goes, a dead player could easily turn off BuffBlock until they get back on their feet.

The PvP mechanic that provides reduced returns for stack buffs...does it effect debuffs as well?

As for reading someone's fortune on the fly, if they do it to me, I'll pass one back. I don't just cast it on passers-by.
Drive-by buffing, is not something I typically do. If I see a lowbie in trouble, and sometimes not-so-lowbie's, I'll hand out some buffs, or a non-damaging debuff on their attacker(s).
I came out of my base one day to see someone beating a hasty retreat for the Talos tram, she was trying to anyway, as she had a Carnie ambush in tow and they were just out of range of the drones. She was thankful of the CM,Heal, and Fort.
I do not, nor have I ever buffed anyone standing at WW/BM. I even turn off my own AoE's, my bubblers Dispersion Bubble is annoying to me, I can just imagine what it's like for others.
I have to wonder if the Mystic Fortune buffs can be set to only affect teammates. It would eliminate the problem of drive-by buffing, while not severely impacting the effectiveness of the power.
That said, Mystic Fortune is one of the drive-by buffs that bug me the least. Most of the time, you're getting buffs as you're running from one place to the other and it's gone by the time you get there. It's a waste of time and you're stuck with the effects without ever getting any real benefit from it. Mystic fortune, since it lasts so long, usually ensures that you will at least get to use it.

Emberly, some of us are true clutzes. I don't mind speed boost when I am going in a straight line in an open field or body of water....but in a mission, and in the cities, I bounce off of walls..every wall. If there is a wall, I will bounce off of it.
Giving me speed boost is not good.
So tell me....how is it friendly, kind, and helpful to give such as me Speed Boost????
Hmm...Speed Boost is my only sore, sore, spot...I can handle, or work around, all Mystic Fortunes except the speed boosting one. That one I declare a Jihad upon.
Having said my peace, I will leave

But seriously, a lot of the times people throw buffs at you isn't an 'act of kindness'. I don't play a lot of buffing toons, but when I do, I will only throw buffs at people who I see involved in actual combat and are having a hard time with it. Mostly on newbies who have gotten in over their heads. I usually get thanked for that.
Most drive by buffs occur in places like WW and the Black Market where they are of zero value because the recipient is standing there and will continue to stand there for the next 15 minutes or longer while sorting through IOs. Most of those are for nothing else besides the amusement of the caster.
That's on the order of annoyance of people who insist in running all of their more flamboyant AoE buffs in public places and refuse to be courteous enough to turn them off when they don't need them. At the very least I can move away from an AoE toggle buff. I can't get away from Mystic Fortune now!
