What do you name your Soldiers of Arachnos?

Latin names of spiders are quite common.

I tried to get the black widow for my spider, Latrodectus Mactans (and mistyped it slightly which might be why I got it).

My widow is La veuve, veuve being french for widow.

Mine is "Spawn of Bringer" for my Night Widow, which is a combination of both of my first level 50s, both blueside and redside. They are "Shadow of Spawn" and "Bringer of Nightmare". My Bane/Crab is "Bringer's Nightmare", simply because it was my first VEAT the day they released, which was a week after I got my Stalker to 50.

My soldier is the Warrior Widow. I expect some confusion later on, but the name fits because she is both a warrior and a widow. And it was free and I'm too lazy to come up with something better.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

I originally posted all the way back on page 2, but only named Arachnophelia. So since I've been playing my SoA a lot more lately, I thought I'd go ahead and post them all.

Arachnophelia

Picture Maud Adams from Octopussy. In that white bathrobe. With Crab Spider arms. Now picture her on a recruitment poster for Arachnos. That's basically where the concept came from.

Basically, she has a fetish for spiders, and wants to become one. So the Crab Spider legs are a way for her to do that. (She would probably go full Tarantula if she could, but doesn't have the psi scores to get into the program)

Huntsman Raynard

"Steve Raynard" is actually the alias my vigilante, Bloodwolf, uses when he goes undercover. The name comes from Raynard the Fox. So this is actually an undercover hero. I plan to give him the Bane powers, so he is stealthy like his Scrapper/Stalker persona.

He's going Hero and then Vigilante, so he will have a Longbow costume as well.

Operative Rachel

Another of my characters, Alan Midnight, is from the 26th century, and has a robotic AI he brought to this time with him named Rachel. I have a villainous version of Alan who is a Robots Mastermind, however since Rachel herself looks human, except for having retractable claws, I realized I could make an evil version of her as a Widow. (Normally she is Alan's Assault Bot)

The backstory I came up with is that this Blood Widow, who coincidentally really was named Rachel, stumbled across Alan while he was trying to get his AI to work in the body he built with 20th century parts. The Widow tried to fight him but was killed. Seeing an opportunity, Alan decided to use the parts to put implants in the Widow's brain, figuring that would be easier than trying to build a whole body.

So this AI is now infiltrating Arachnos. And to make it funny, she's trying to act human, but has no idea how to, and so everything she says and does just comes out creepy. Like, "I'm a real Arachnos Widow, honest, I have not been killed and taken over by an Artificial Intelligence or anything..." It's so macabre and yet hilarious that I really enjoy playing her.

Witless minion is executed (as an example of what NOT to do when Dr. Aeon is "entertaining" Lord Recluse).

Name: Leggs

She's got very long legs ...
And this is very similar to Arachnophelia's backstory, except she actually wanted it and put herself through it herself. After modelling for the above mentioned recruitment poster.

Heh. Seems the 'girl with arachnophilia' character is common around here. My level 50 crab's name is 'Leggy Blonde'. She just thinks Lord Recluse is soooo hot.

My level 29 Night Widow is 'Stickfigure Steve' -- he joined the widow program because he was a 98-pound weakling and wanted to be stronger. But he's a traitor, having gone full hero now...

And just to say it, "Arachnophilia" (with an i, not e) was taken on Virtue, so at least one other person had the same thought. I was happy to be able to make a pun on the name Ophelia, though.

My Widow is Cholula... Yes, named after the hot sauce ... She's supposed to be the "player character" version of the Night Widow NPC pet/companion who works with Mei'jin (my older Stalker-). That pet version's name was originally a nod towards the theme that Mei's Mastermind partner picked for his thugs. They're all named after chili peppers. (Chipotle, Anaheim, Serrano, and so on-) The mastermind himself is Cayenne.

My Bane is Mameshiba. He's named after a Japanese brand of snack food... Their mascot is this weird, adorable little animated soy-bean puppy thing. I have a talking keychain version of the creature, and one of the things it says is simply "Bean"... Which, with tiny speaker distortion and its accent, comes out "Baaaaeeeennn!"

Thus was born one small, green, ridiculously cute and utterly silly "chibi" Bane spider. XD

Mine is called: Maryland Blue Crab 1 (and I am all blue colored)

Maryland Blue Crab 2 is my twin brother who no longer plays. I play on Freedom now.

My Widow used to be called Rainbow Widow on Virtue but after I moved her to Freedom, the name is taken so I rename her to Fabulous Widow. hehe

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Al 'Aqran is my Crab Spider. Pretty standard hired killer/mercenary type really, nothing hugely original, but I'm a sucker for those types of characters. She stays hidden in her armor, unless she plans to kill any witnesses anyway (i.e. in a solo defeat-all). Works for Arachnos since the pay is very good, the targets plentiful, and only the future victims ask questions. The name means "Scorpion" in Arabic, I use variations of it for a lot of games, usually it goes on archers but I thought it highly appropriate for all the backpack-based attacks.

My Night Widow is named Katili, Swahili for bloodthirsty or cruel. Assassin by trade, she comes from a long line of them. She has a sister who's rejected the murder for hire trade as well as her family, a Claws/Willpower Scrapper named Majasusi (Swahili again, traitor or secret agent), and who's responsible for Katili's lost arm and badly-scarred face. Katili of course vows revenge, and in the meantime works for Arachnos.

Bane Spider Minchew has a rather pedestrian name, but it's on purpose. See, inside that nice, anonymous armor is a former accountant named Anna Rodriguez-DeMarco, who along with her husband found some files that put her employer Arachnos in a rather bad light. They didn't do the best job of covering their tracks either, but one thing they DID do was get the drop on the two SoAs sent to "question" them. They sent their three kids off (i.e. to Paragon), and borrowed the names and uniforms of their would-be killers to cover for them until they themselves could get out.

Obviously Fortunata Epps would be Anna's husband, David DeMarco.

(Yeah, I'm aware that both the above majorly fly in the face of canon, since there's supposed to be a hive mind at work and such, but I got stuck on the idea of taking over the assassins' identities to carry through on their escape. Anna has already made it to Paragon, but David's only level 9 or so, I need to work on him, I hear tell Fortunatas rock hard later. The Bane's fun in a Mace Stalker way, though she feels squishy.)

My crabspider is named ArachniBlast. Basically Spider and Blast (since that's what she basically does) put together. However, people just call her Arachni for short. I decided to stay villain side, because I wrote her background story to be Lord Recluse's granddaughter, and most deadly crab spider lady out of his army. I also made Shadow Spider and Black Scorpion her parents (Shadow Spider seemed fitting and so did Black Scorpion for the whole "deadly and poisonous" theme). She has had a few bad run ins with a few men, but her answer: STAB THEM WITH HER LEGS, INJECTING POISON TO KILL THEM. I designed her to be a sort of queen spider, who is currently engaged to a guy crabspider named Black Arachnid 2125. The build, is on the forums here, was going for the whole "perma pets/high recharge" concept, but the build is really a "concept" build, that plays really well. Anyways, here's a pic:

I have:

Operative Bloodbane the Bane/Huntswoman.

Mistress of Torments the Night Widow (she like to cut people).

Weaver of Sorrows the Fortunata who weaves patterns of despair and misery through the minds of her enemies. She's also gone hero after recovering from Arachnos brainwashing, so the name now also refers to her own sorrow over her lost family.

Steel Spider
the Crab/Bane. Her name refers to her spider legs, the fact that she's blatantly heavily cyborged with shiny parts, and she's an Arachnos fanatic who is very More-Socially-Darwinist-Than-Thou. She is strong and hard and cold like steel is her attitude.

My only advice is to not to name your Soldier of Arachnos after a certain title that only fits one spec or another.

Such as, "Fortunata Mary", or "Huntsman Larry", these would basically either force you into certain specs you may not end up liking in the end, or force you to be playing a character that makes no sense. Would Huntsman Larry make a lot of sense in massive Crab Spider armor? Would Fortunata Mary make a lot of sense stabbing people with claws (and essentially using no psychic powers whatsoever)? Probably not.

If you are having trouble finding a good name, try picking a title that could be used by a number of types. Such as "Operative <insert name here>". Also, keep in mind that it doesn't have to be real names, it could be something like "Nocturne".

However, play how you want to play. There are no strict rules to follow, the best advice I can offer is to just do what feels right.

Named my soldier Agent Nobody. He's a master of disguise who's only out for himself. I even made costumes for his various false IDs and the organizations he's infiltrated (IIRC, Longbow, Crey, Carnival, Arachnos). He has no real ID (he's long since forgotten it), so he created the Agent Nobody persona to help keep things in order.

*edit* Yes, he has the crab legs... and he *still fools everyone*. lol

While I understand where you're coming from, it's easy enough to make alts in this game that I wouldn't worry about that. First of all, if you're going to be a Crab Spider AT ALL, you're going to be a Crab Spider. There is no switching builds and becoming a Bane or Huntsman. You may pick those powers, but you'll still be stuck with the crab legs, and now they'll sit on your back and be dead weight.

It's far easier to go with a Crab concept, and then start a different character for your Wolf or Bane concept. If you like one, or the other, you can discard the one you don't like, and don't have to worry about respecs or whatever to get rid of your crab legs. And a Huntsman is a Huntsman, if you're planning on creating a character based on that concept, you've probably already tried out the Crab and Bane alternatives.

It's a lot easier to switch between Fortunata and Night Widow, and you might choose a name that's more neutral in that case. My Night Widow is staying a Night Widow, though, it wouldn't fit her concept to have Fortunata as a secondary build. (She will probably go for a with stealth/without stealth combo instead)

Named my Crab Spider Icestation Zero. He's from an Antartic team of Arachnos and sports blue and white for his costume colors.

My Fortunata's named Firestorm Echo. He hails from an Arachnos base in a part of the Shadow Shard known for it's "firestorms" that leave "echoes" in the air as they sizzle through. He sports red and white.

But you'll still have Bane/Huntsman powers, so yes you will be a Bane/Huntsman on that build. And some people like the legs, you know.

Well, I think the thing is, by the time you're worried about a character name, you're concept oriented enough that the presence of the legs will bother you.

Although I did like the character that was posted here once who was a Crab Spider, but was "asked as a special mission by Lord Recluse himself to join the Bane Spiders". The implication is that the character is a Crab Spider at heart and likes the legs enough to keep them, even when not actually using them.

What makes me balk is the logical inconsistency of having the Crab backpack, and not being ABLE to use it. Whether you choose to use it or not, you cannot fire blasts from the backpack if you have the Bane Mace. Then again, it bothers me that you cannot bonk people over the head with the Patron Mace. (Except with Brawl...)
