Players experiencing issues related to Graphics cards

If you are experiencing issues potentially related to graphics cards and drivers we want you to know that we are aware of these issues and are working to resolve them. Some of these issues have already been discovered and we’d much rather have you playing the game to celebrate the launch of Issue 17: Dark Mirror!

For those users with ATI cards who are experiencing input lag, a possible work around has been posted here on our Knowledge base.

Another common issue is drivers (for any type of video card) which need to be updated. An excellent source of information on this topic is located here.

For users experiencing other issues or for those who the above solution does not work, please contact our tech support department who may be able to further assist you in this area.

To speed up the process of resolving your particular issue, it would be extremely helpful to us for you to have a Game Advisor Diagnostic Report. You can easily provide this by following the directions on this page.

What, nothing about the 'i17 gfx degradation on integrated Intel GPUs' that Tex quoted?

The only problem I've been seeing are frequent flashing of the screen, like a black flash that lasts for a fraction of a second. I haven't played around with the video settings much to see what might be causing it. I have a Radeon 4770.

I know the problem isn't just me as someone in chat was mentioning they were having the same problem.

hooray for nothing supporting macs...the program asked to dl for diagnostics cant be run on my computer i have followed everything posted in forums so far all to no avail...all because i wanted to focus on my graphic designing

So this only started happening after i17 came out today. I play for about 2 minutes and it stops and "Assertion Failure" pops up. Then the game quits. I have NO idea why.

I'm running an iMac on Snow Leopard.
My graphics card is: ATI Radeon X1600

I've had to restart my computer many times because it would freeze and the game itself many MORE times!

I've deleted the City Of Heroes Preference file, flushed the terminal and verified files!
What do I do??? I just wana enjoy Ultra Mode and cute kitty tails and stuffs.

Sometimes the game just freezes and all I can do is restart my entire computer

I get that flash too! Like all the windows such as powers, chat etc etc

It's inconclusive, I'll have to play for a while to be sure, but disabling Catalyst AI seems to have solved it. I'll keep playing just to make sure and report on it later tonight before I head to bed.

Edit: Nope, still happening. It seems to be random, but so far isn't enough to keep me from playing, fortunately.

Yeah... It's crashing right after I click "I Agree". It's not even running now. I'm following your directions but seeing no results.

I have done all that again now I have got up (it looks the same info that I sent using the dxdiag last night), but I did send that to them last night (for me) after they had directed me to the ATI fix after I had stated I had a nvidia card and also directed me to the thread that I was posting in.

I have heard nothing since then, I can only assume it must have been hometime, and will in all likelyhood not hear anything for a few more hours yet.

It would be interesting to know exactly how many in the player base are effected by this and other little gems that were pointed out on test and made it to live. At least this gives me the opportunity to go out into the realword and porchase some binoculars so I can read the level of the enhancements in my enhancement window

As it stands, went on this morning, and still the same problems. As it stands, I have cancelled the repeat billing on both of my accounts ( a 12 monther is due in may) till It is resloved, as I have already paid for something that I cannot use, and on disability benefits totaling £120 a week this is an essential luxery that I use a lot, as I don't get out much, but I don't want to pay for again for 12 moths of non useage, as I am now on day 2 of not been able to use for me and it not been my choice or fault.

Experiencing a complete screen flicker whenever I use any scroll bars, anywhere in the game. Did NOT experience this on test. Weird, and annoying.

Ok this is odd.. for the most part everything is running fine except...

I have 2 machines, Identical both are running BFG 9800 gt cards and things are fine but one is showing shader quality as being N/A the other one is accessable... The chipset is not intel, I have no idea why one is showing it and the other is not... can anyone shed some light on this one?

Interesting....Before i17 and Ultra Mode, my three and a half year old laptop was running the game slicker 'n snot. The game looked fantastic. There were shadows coming off the trees, armor was shiny, my toons looked great! Light reflections on armor such as 'Tech Sleek', for example, looked great!

Post Ultra Mode and i17:

Bland. Environments are reflecting things that they shouldn't. All shadows have disappeared. My characters now have flat, bland coloring. Cursor disappears, etc. Shader Qualities, Shadowers, and all else within the Advanced Graphic Options read N/A, so I can't even begin to try and mess with the graphics settings.

On this Gateway laptop that I have(I know very little about computers), I have a DirectX, and a Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2050 @1.60 GHZ (2 CPUs). I don't know what this means, but I have been operating City of Heroes/City of Villains perfectly and beautifully with this for a little over 2 years now. I remember I started messing with the Advanced Graphics Options in November of last year, and the game started to look even better. Ran fine, only a few hiccups over the past several months, nothing out of the norm.

Now Ultra Mode: Again, toons look flat. There are now shadows. Arachnos Flyers are reflecting patterns of itself, a strange "reflection" is occuring on doors, etc.

So, that's my problem in a nutshell. I don't feel the need to get another computer as this one has done fine by me for a while now. Still fast. No issues with any other programming on the laptop itself. So I am kind of puzzled why all of a sudden this Ultra Mode has now made a great looking game on my Gateway laptop now look...bland.

I have contacted Support, and submitted a report, only to have an automatic answer to try something that I have already tried in game.

@Ik's Last Stand

Well, aside from the occasional screen flicker, my real issue so far is that i17 seems to be causing problems with my chat clients, i.e. Ventrilo and Skype, both of which I use often to communicate verbally with my friends in game. When I have the game up, these clients can't seem to stay connected, and I have problems with it seeming to block all audio and communications from them. I never had this problem before i17, so I know it's not my system, and my connection is fine. I can run ultra mode with hardly a hiccup, and it looks beautiful, but I would like to be able to keep communicating with my friends without having to stop and use in game chat every few seconds when I'm running a TF/SF or a trial, as it gets annoying. Any solution there?

For ATI users who have had the weird "arrow key movement throws me into autorun auto spin" bug, use the suggested fix posted in the first post on this page, then, go to control panel, keyboard, and reduce the repeat delay and repeat rate on your keyboard, this has stopped the 360 autospin on mine but, it makes using the architect for missions nearly impossible as it slows your keystroke input on keyboard inputs.

Thanks for providing us with the Game Advisor. Please disable all startup items to make sure that no background programs or processes are causing a conflict. To do this, please perform the following:

1. Press and hold the Windows key and then hit the R key. This should bring up the Run dialog box.

2. Type "MSCONFIG" without the quotes, and click "OK." This should open the System Configuration Utility.

3. Go to the "Startup" tab and click the "Disable All" button.

4. Next go to "Services" tab and check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" check box, then click the "Disable All" button.

5. Once these items are all disabled, click the "OK" button and you will get a prompt to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Once Windows is back up, do not start any other programs and then try the game again. Please let us know if this helps.
